    Mix metal drums in Reaper with ease.
    Drum mixing can seem so overwhelming when faced with the millions of options we have at our disposal as engineers. Just too many questions and not enough clear answers.
    What plugins should we use?
    Should we use drum samples?
    What should be EQ’d and what should be left alone?
    How should we route our drum tracks?
    Just to demonstrate how simple metal drum mixing can be, I’ve decided to do an entire drum mix in Reaper using nothing but STOCK PLUGINS.
    Just universal, solid mix moves that help achieve that crisp metal drum sound most of us are after.

    Reaper is slowly starting to become a go to. I've owned it for a little while but never really utilized all that much mainly because for school, we're required to work in Pro Tools. But on my own time and personal projects, I'm really starting to love Reaper a lot especially for sound design purposes. The customization of it is fantastic. Have nothing but good things to say about it.

    I love Reaper. It's seriously the most versatile and feature packed DAW out there, from what I've seen at least. I've tried using other DAWs but always end up going back to Reaper. You can completely customize everything and design your version to fit your needs. Rather than adapting to the work flow of the DAW, Reaper adapts to your work flow. The only downside I have found is that its not very intuitive compared to other DAWs for beginners but there's tons of free videos online to teach you how to do pretty much anything inside of Reaper. You can even edit video O.o lol

    Wow! Those are some pretty large cuts, especially on the kick. Is that pretty typical or did this recording just call for it because the drum didn't sound that great or something? Also, just curious. I know you use the "behind the bookshelf technique" for your room mic. Do you typically only do mono room mic or do you go stereo? Thanks! Great video. I was a long time PT user and now use Reaper exclusively. Excellent program and can't beat the price.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  Před 3 lety

      Hello Matt! For some reason (maybe there's a way to adjust this) the graphic in the Rea EQ is shallow and makes the cuts look bigger than they actually are. I was only reducing those ranges by 6-8 dB which is relatively modest. I recorded this way back in 2011, so I was using 57's as room mics and placed them as far back in the room as possible. This was way before I came up with the "shelf" technique. Sometimes I use a mono room, sometimes I use a stereo pair...and other times I'll use all three. It depends on what mood I'm in. You can achieve a great room sound with a single mic.

  • @julian.borisov
    @julian.borisov Před rokem

    Agreed. Gear IS overrated, but also makes the difference when you actually have loud hi-fi in a roomy space (or nice headphones which we all have now). Still, for the price of that gear, you can rather add additional tiny samples and fx to enrich the mix.

They are giving us premium quality stuff at a really excellent price and could charge a fair bit more of they wished in my opinion. We just get to decide what vsti and libraries we want and aren't stuck with gbs of stuff we don't use/want, what's funny about this to me is that i actually bought an air music bundle cheap, which has a lot of the protools vstis and plugins 😄 60gbs worth of libraries! which i only now have vaccumm pro synth installed from that right now! Cause i don't use the rest at then moment and i recently changed computer and saw no need to reinstall them as i wanted to keep the plugins i use to a bare minimum of what i actually use to get the results i want and an forced to use a more limited number.
