- The modern web can be distracting, invasive, and slow. Luckily, there's another way!
Using an RSS/Atom feed reader can really help cut out distractions. Doing so from the terminal can enhance the effect, keeping you informed without all of the adtech and algorithms.
Enter Newsboat! Newsboat is an open source fork of Newsbeuter, and is a wonderful terminal-based feed reader. I even fire it up on my old Wyse terminal in the video!
In this video, I explain how to install and configure Newsboat on Manjaro, Fedora, and Pop!_OS. It's packaged up for other distros too, and non-Linuxes like macOS (via Brew) and FreeBSD.
Shout-out to Christian from @christianlempa for helping out my pronunciation! This video also has some footage of @TechnoTim and @LearnLinuxTV, both of whom are great.
If you want to help support the channel, you can join the Patreon at / veronicaexplains . For $10/mo, I'll print your name on my dot matrix printer and put it in the video. Super neat! There's also a $1 and $5 tier- any little bit helps me spend more time making videos!
Lastly, the shirt is at vkc.sh/merch. I know you're wondering! :) Proceeds benefit the channel!

As a 60year old man I am trying to understand more of Linux. I find the videos that you do very helpful. So thanks a lot !!
I'm glad the videos are helpful! :)
The inventtor of linux Linux Torvalds, is 54 yo as of janurary 2024. 🐧
Absolutely love this type of content. Was running rainbow stream for a while to have a twitter feed in terminal. Huge supporter of old school terminals accomplishing modern tasks.
Love to see you install Manjaro using Manjaro architect.
I'd love to see a followup video about newsboat macros. Love your videos!
Your cgp grey levels of alliteration were not unnoticed!
I love the way you entertain me with your videos. You're so awesome Veronica! I can't wait for the part II.
The Wyse running top in the background-what a nerd flex 🥰
Wow. This was actually both informative, and charming with your humor. Underrated presentation!
Newsboat sequel covering macros would definitely be appreciated. Specifically if there are any vim-like macros available/configurable. I'd also be very interested in customizing the newsboat feed to minimize distractions as you mentioned at the end of the video.
I would also be interested in your video editing workflow if it's also Linux based.
Noted! My video editing all takes place on Linux, using Kdenlive! Not sure it's anything fancy, just using lots of titles and a few effects to jazz it up a bit!
@@VeronicaExplains and that video never came :c
@@Zakaros1000 Never say never.
Just subscribed to your channel on RSS. Thanks for your great work veronica! @@VeronicaExplains
@@pugdev4 Be nice, I'm a busy mom trying to build a channel infrastructure. Plus CZcams is going after folks talking about RSS and CZcams options, so I need to *tread lightly* on this one. If it eventually comes out it might not even be available anywhere other than my PeerTube (tinkerbetter.tube).
This is amazing, I love rss feeds but anything in the Terminal is just fun to me. Thank you!!
Thank you Veronica! I love newsboat and other terminal applications, currently I have a number of Linux based systems on my network, as of this post all based on Fedora 36 and use rsync and ssh to keep the configs and some selected documents updated from my "master" workstation. Keep up the great work!
Also a mutt crash course would be highly appereciated. 😊
So glad that you made a video about this. Being able to get news via rss feed again is amazing.
Thank you for this! Newsboat is awesome. This has to be my favoritest most favorite channel ever, favoriter than any other. Please keep it up! The alliteration alone... omg.
It was tough to try to tackle!
@@VeronicaExplains You nailed that nerdy nomenclature.
I love your teaching style! I've added Newsboat to my terminal now. :)
I love at the end of the day...the older ways just seem better hahaha great video! Love your stuff Veronica! Keep it up!
So glad I found your channel. I'm currently on a quest to live in the terminal (I know, I know but please folks, let me have my fun.) This is exactly what I was looking for.
I haven’t ever heard anyone talk through how to close nano before. My muscle memory for that process is so strong I forgot that you set the name of the file before the program exits.
Ps aux pipe grep nano, kill.. Etc?
Thunderbird has been my RSS reader for years. Thank you very much for the Awesome RSS add-on, I was using Pale Moon to find feeds.
Loving your videos Veronica, thanks! Didn't know about this tool but it's far nicer for reading the news than websites.
I'd really like another video on using youtube inside of newsboat, that sounds super useful for not getting sucked into the algorithm. Thanks for all your lovely videos.
What a great content! Looking forward to the part two!
Same here!!
Ok, now I have a third pane in my tmux config that travels with me from host to host. Thank you! Just so you know we FreeBSD people appreciate you including us.
FreeBSD is amazing! It's been a bit since I used it directly for a project, but at one point in the past I worked with a COBOL system running on FreeBSD- it was a joy to work with.
@@VeronicaExplains That is about as fun as Microsoft FoxPro running on FreeBSD under SCO emulation for a public warehouse software I helped support in the late 90s.
Thank you for making me discover this fantastic tool! I'm looking forward to the new part!
Please make a part2 of this wonderful video!!!!!
You're the best. The YT RSS Feed thinger is amazing!
Great option, exactly what I was looking for. Tks Veronica.
This is great video! Make part 2 for sure...will install newsboat and give it a go
Lady, you are GOOD!!
I'd forgotten all about RSS. I _think_ I used it back in the days of Mosaic/Netscape, then Google Reader but I forgot about it.
I might try using it again.
Thanks for your very clear and NON-THREATENING explanation!
You're very welcome! That's the goal!
Great content, great presentation style 👍
Thanks for the video. You helped with setting it up more than some other content providers.
As you talk about/show, I hate that social media made most websites (and even the browsers) stop highlighting the RSS feeds. Love this tutorial. I've used both graphical and CLI feed readers in the past, but I've moved on to a self-hosted Miniflux feed reader so that I have access no matter where I am (without needing to SSH in)
Such a useful and fun video. Thanks
Thank veronica for your video After see this video i install feed on my antix in newsboat
Nice work! Thanks for including me in your demo!!!
No problem at all! :)
Thanks for the video. I'm going to give Newsboat a try.
The mom sense-of-humor is nostalgic of my own mother whilst growing up and hilarious to me even to this day. Helps me see my mother as not so cringe but as legit funny in ways I didn’t understand until now. Awesome. 😎 I guess families have ways of being deeply similar even across lineages. I’m glad I stuck around to watch multiple videos.
Just set this up. Excellent time saver.
Can't wait for part 2!
That was wonderful. Thank you. I suspect this will have a huge impact on my daily work.
I am looking forward to the part two. 😀
Thank you for watching, I'm glad it helped!
I was using newsboat today on a fresh install of Debian 12. I decided to compile it from source. When I was doing that, I thought about how I first learned about it.
Thanks again for being so inspiring 😀
Is a second one video still in the works?
@@VeronicaExplains
I have used newsboat, but never went beyond the install and adding feeds. I have used it for a few years now and quite enjoy it.
Great video Veronica! Your style reminds a little of 'Technology Connections' also on CZcams. You are both great and thanks again :)
That's quite the compliment, thank you!!
@@VeronicaExplains I agree on both counts!
What a great content! Keep it up please.
Great information. Thanks 😃
+Manjaro, awesome video!
This is becoming my favorite Tech-cast , displacing ExplainingComputers.
Bravo Veronica, Terminal rules them all, Command Line Interface 4ever.
I hope you keep up with the content
Thank you for spreading the love for RSS! #Nanogang!
Thank YOU for watching!! I hope the RSS resurgence I'm seeing amongst sites I follow keeps growing. It's such a wonderful way to connect directly to stuff you care about!
Nice program, I was an avid Firefox RSS bookmarks when they were working, now I use newsboat on WSL
I daily drive Manjaro and absolutely love it.
This was a refreshing video
I love you channel!!
Veronica, you are addicting.
Thanks for the shout out 🤗
Thanks for helping!!
SWEEEEEET!!! I had to get away from the browser based feed readers due to all of the 'noise' (pictures/ads/etc) because sometimes
AWW what a cute little ground squirrel out here on my deck..... I should really water that plant.....
... yeah that ... I get distracted easily.
Thanks VKC! Now to fire up WSL2 on my work computer and get Newsboat working
thanks for this info and steps, I use nano becuz of raspberry pi, going to update to pop os I like how it's just about the same as older distros
Love this. Eagerly awaiting the sequel. Want to know how to get that unobtrusive experience. Lynx? is it Lynx?
Yes, more Manjaro, please!
explained clearly 👍 thanks...
you're amazing
This was great!
Hey thanks for this. There's something about reading things in the terminal that's just quieter and calmer and so much better. It's sort of how the entire public Internet was back in the late 90s, or even reading message boards on Compuserve for the few minutes a month you could without your dad justifiably complaining about the bill. Your videos are really helpful, and you're always saying "If you'd like a video about x, comment below!" so here's my request. Vim. If it's such a pain and I hit my PC with a hammer just to exit it, why is it so beloved? There's got to be a reason I'm sure of it.
I just installed newsboat with Homebrew and configured it.
Since I previously installed Lynx, all my links opens in Lynx. And since I configured links to save all my cookies into /dev/null, this means full 100% distraction-free reading and 99.999% privacy.
I am in pure hype!1!1!!1!!!one
I can't wait for part 2!
looking forward to the sequel
Nice! I'll be sure to add this channel. 👍
Love that good ole Veronica charm! you always make everything sound interesting!
ps: ewww nano, vim gang! ;)
Newsboat is one of my favourite terminal apps. I have it on my Chromebook.
the reaction face when mentioning VIM :D
YES! Sequel, Please!
Hi Veronica, Thank you for the great demo. Can I use Text to Speach to read allowed each artical. What aplication would you recomend for tts. Thanks.
I'm not sure if it is me, but I couldn't find the RSS feed in this youtube page. I even used a RSS finder...., But besides that great video! Looking forward to part 2, and do Mutt too!!
Sometimes I have to hit refresh before the feed shows up. Plus, make sure you're on the channel page and not just a video.
Try going to czcams.com/users/veronicaexplains and then hitting refresh if it doesn't show up. I use Awesome RSS on Firefox and it shows up as expected.
@@VeronicaExplains I was on the video page!! Thanks! I'll try again. Great videos by way, really liking your channel. Have you ever tried Qubes OS, I'd be very curious on your thoughts. make make for an interesting video.
So cool!
Have never used RSS before (maybe now I'll try) but the interface reminds me of the old Usenet news readers (like "rn" and "tin") that I used to use "back in the day". :-)
Too much alliteration. Too much! Haha just kidding, this was a great explainer and very helpful.
Yes, interested in part two. Please?
i'm using liferea, its minimal and gets my work done easily. although i'm mainly using it for youtube subscriptions including your channel.
Fantastic! And thank you!
Hell yes, RSS in the terminal. Also, much love to the late Aaron Swartz.
I just had an original thought: Could you please cover Manjaro in greater depth in a future video? 😎
I'd highly suggest you do some research on Manjaro. It's the worst distro I know of. Arco, Endeavour, or Arch would serve you better.
we want part 2 😊
Miss Alta Vista n Netscape!!❤❤❤
Never looked in to RSS feeds but you made it sound interesting and fascinating so shall install now.
(Linux MX Debian)
My config file appears to be called urls and is in /root/.newsboat/
As is often the case with Linux the config file has now turned up in my home directory, probably after trying to run it but is called urls.
All working now.
Que buena remera!
I am loving the feedreader on arch but i need to get that youtube pop out window thing working :D
Also, @veronica, I hope this is the beginning of a "console/terminal apps" series!
I do want to nerd out to the history of feed readers
I mainly use QuiteRSS on Windows.
But i've also got into using Newsboat on my Raspberry Pi. I find using that and Lynx with the local uk newspapers filtered through FrogFind is a lot less destracting.
I find Fluent Reader beautiful. More should be designed that way. And I use FreshRSS for cross platform syncing
Thanks for this, interesting program.
So, now i test eMails in terminal, with neomutt.
(Sorry, for my bad english. i'm german) :D
Yes! Please cover newboat macros in the sequel (GASP! Shhhhhh)
This Channel is awesome! Subs++
Thank you!!!
Excuse me, Dr. Veronica! How do I use podbit in Newsboat?
13:33 That's how "vanced" project died🤣
I installed Newsboat on the terminal in a Chrome OS Flex "Linux environment" (Debian Bullseye) just for giggles. Works great, but for even more terminal goodness, I configured it to use the text browser Lynx. Who needs all those pictures anyway? To avoid some inconvenience I set Lynx to allow all cookies. Also nice to use in that terminal: Vim, MIdnight Commander, and Music on Console.
I do as I mostly use RSS feeds for checking out internet comics. ;>
yes please nerd out. i was looking up fortran tutorials for fun XD
Does it have ALT (Automatic Language Translation) to CTRL the quality of news i.e. SHIFT it up to the top of the *RSF* RSS league - in this #order Norwegian Danish Swedish Estonian Finnish Irish Portuguese Spanish [with Costa Rica #cadences] Lithuanian German [with Liechtenstein #lilt] ... French [with Burkina Faso #frisson]
Hey Veronica, I just watched this and installed newsboat and after two full minutes I love it. But...I have a problem, I can't find the follow up video. Heartbreak!! Is CZcams messing with me? Or, are you just teasing me about the sequel? The little blurb says this was uploaded a year ago. Are you way behind on your todo list? I hope the delays doesn't have anything to do with bad news in your life. Please don't tease me as I have an extremely fragile male ego and am easily crushed with unfulfilled expectations. Love your channel.
+1 for the sequel!
Your killing me. Keep it up. I came for the funny hat. Where's the the funny hat?
I gave it to my daughter, I'll have to ask for it back for the sequel!
