    Digimon World, being the first Digimon game, had a lot of the same mechanics as the Digimon Virtual Pet. You had to feed, train, and battle your Digimon to make bigger Digimon, but sometimes you get a big ol' green slug! WHAT??? I want a Greymon! Aside from raising Digimon, you could also travel and explore a whole world filled with Digimon, a Digimon World if you will. So let's take a look back on Digimon's first video game.

      Leomon is the Digimon equivalent of a dog in JoJo.
      Adventure: we know what happened.
      Tamers: offed by Beelzemon
      Frontier: the kid with the spirit of something-Leomon is the only one to die.
      Savers: Bancholeomon. He's a villian so I'm assuming he dies... Never watched this one.
      X-Evokution movie: first scene.
      Adventure Tri: THE SAME leomon dies for the third or fourth time......
      Cross Wars: Madleomonis a one-off villian so dies.
      And I remember this Digimon V-Tamers manga had a Leomon in it that could evolve into Iceleomon but I don't remember how it ends.
      Possibly eaten by Arkadimon like half of all deaths in that manga.
      And those are only the ones I could remember

      Adventure 01: Dies to MetalEtemon.
      Adventure 02: Doesn't appear/small cameo at the very end. SPARED.
      Tamers: Brutally killed by Beelzemon
      Frontier: Was an enemy as IceLeomon. Dies to Takuya/Agunimon.
      Savers: There were two mega forms of Leomon. Saberleomon, the first one dies to Gizamon during his fight against the Data Squad. Bancholeomon who was the good one and who had merged with Marcus' dad, dies making the ultimate sacrifice to kill the Digimon God Yggdrasil.
      Xros Wars: Was MadeLeomon, dies to Xros Heart but then is RESURRECTED as a Leomon after Taiki captures the Code Crown for Sword Land.
      Boy Hunters: Doesn't appear. SPARED.
      Adventure Tri: Dies to Meicoomon.

    My most emotional ride with this game as a kid was when I had a Biyomon. I don't know what I did differently but it ended up evolving into a Kokatorimon. I was ecstatic, I had only had crappy (sometimes literally) Digimon for a while and was excited to have a brand new Digimon.
    I went and did so many battles, fought tough Digimon to get into the city... and then Kokatorimon got sick, and I was aaages away from the city. I urgently started running back to buy medicine before Kokatorimon died. I had just crossed the bridge east of the city and was almost there... and my Digimon stopped. The game zoomed into my Digimon while I felt a sad pit in my stomach. It was only half way through the animation that I realized "hold on... he's not dying- he's DIGIVOLVING!". I had never had an Ultimate Digimon before, until my Kokatorimon digivolved into Piximon.
    I was so overjoyed! I instantly went on more adventures with my new strong Digimon! I'm pretty sure I even managed to defeat the Piximon who goes to the city with my own Piximon. I didn't let anything stop me... little did I realize I should have let something stop me. I didn't fully understand the Vir meter, and that when it filled up my Digimon would digivolve into Sukamon. I didn't stop and find bathrooms when Piximon needed to poop, so naturally he ended up 'digivolving' into Sukamon. I was DEVISTATED. I ended up killing my digimon on purpose because I was so disappointed.
    Then only about a week later did I find out there was actually a way to convert any Sukamon back into their former Digimon. Once I realized that, you can imagine the regret I had for killing my Digimon! Kid me was NOT impressed in myself.
    Also some honorable mentions are the first time encountering Greymon. Walking out of Jijimon's house to be met with the almighty GREYMON was a shock! Also honerable mention of how difficult I found it to get Monochromon to the city, having to work at the store was so frustrating! "That's highway robbery!" I don't care you stupid penguin, just BUY THE MEDICINE!

    • @KichiMiangra
      @KichiMiangra Před 4 lety +74

      I had a similar sick Digimon story, though mine had a sadder ending. I didn't understand how the stats on digimon effected what they would turn into so because I would often... coddle? and go easy on my digimon training-wise thinking I was taking BETTER care of it by NOT training it too hard, they would usually be weak and turn into Numemon. Maybe 1 in 4 digimon I would raise would be something of worth. This story begins when I got some absolute joy in my Patamon digivolving into a leomon! God Leomon was so cool I got very emotionally attatched to this guy, especially because I was able to use him to progress in the game further and recruit new digimon! When travelling not far from file city I encountered the rare spawn that is pixiemon and not realizing he was an ultimate I thought "Eh, I could beat that little pink poofball!" I was terribly wrong.
      Pixiemon wiped the floor with my Leomon, and worse he got sick when he came to. I didn't have the clinic or the shop or anything yet so ALL of my items where scavenged... I didn't even know there WAS a clinic or a shop... (I had no idea how to play the game honestly... recruiting Digimon scared me because I thought they would hurt my digimon so I was often scared to try new encounters and avoided them...) So my only option was medicine but.... PIXIEMON STOLE IT! And all of my food! I literally had 99 meat and 99 Mushrooms! And all of the SM recoveries I had grinded off of ModokiBetamon to get! I was scared and rushed off towards gear Savanah to try and get to the junk shop and recover my medicine!
      Unfortunately I had no sense of direction and got lost, eventually ending up in Grey Lords Manor. I got stuck in there. I had no healing items, I couldn't get out because of the Flarizamon at the entrance. I was stuck. I didn't want to risk him fighting one of the Soulmon in the front yard or the Flarizamon, I hated when my Digimon died in combat. So I just sat there, and waited until the end with him. "I'm hungry" he'd say. But I had no food. "I'm Sick" he'd say. But I had no Medicine. "I'm tired." He'd say. But I couldn't get him to Punimon to rest. And then it eventually happened: He died, as all Leomon do.
      This was a game, but I was a kid who had sunk DOUBLE DIGITS of hours into this game (Effectively just raising Digimon over and over again and not really progressing) But Each Digimon meant a lot to me and at the rarity of actually accidentally GETTING anything but Numemon left me sad and angry and upset at the loss of my Leomon. This was when I learned by accident that you get good digimon by training them, not coddling them, because I was so angry at Pixiemon for taking my Food, My Medicine, and my LEOMON on top of it all from me I spent the next 3 digimons life cycles training them and pushing them to be as strong as they can be because goddamn it I was going to get my revenge on Pixiemon! I'd train Strong Champions and run back to where Pixiemon had been waiting for him to show up! It took 3 Digimons life cycles to FINALLY encounter him again and with a REALLY suped up Tyrannomon I got my revenge for my Leomon.
      I know that's super overdramatic sounding but again, I was a kid who invested a lot of time into these digimon and cared for each little blob of polygons.

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 Před 3 lety +42

      That's...........not actually how the digivolution system works in this game. There are 3 ways for a Digimon to digivolve, and they are as follows:
      1) There are 4 statistics the game keeps track of, those being weight (you can be within 5 units of the weight you need),number of care mistakes, stats (things like HP, attack and speed, and the number listed is the minimum requirement for that stat), and bonus conditions. By meeting at least 3 of the 4 of these, you're Digimon will digivolve into the appropriate form.
      2) "Special Digivolution", which uses other metrics to determine the next form; this type of digivolution can "break the rules" of normal digivolution, as it were.
      3) Digivolution items will digivolve your Digimon based on the specific item used, but do not increase your stats or life expectancy.

But for ultimate level Digimon, you usually need to raise all your stats to meet this criteria, with each one needing different levels to meet their requirements, but this isn't true for all ultimate level Digimon, for example: Piximon, Mamemon and MetalMamemon require all but HP and MP, and Giromon only needs offense, speed and brains to be raised, but again, it heavily depends on which Digimon you want to get. As for care mistakes, weight and bonus conditions, they all count as separate requirements, while your stats are all one singular requirement, and you need to meet 3 of the 4 to digivolve successfully, for example: if you're trying to get Andromon as your first ultimate Digimon (which is reasonable, I would say), it's probably going to be easier to get him by not focusing on his stats, but as long as you have the correct weight, 5 or fewer care mistakes, and have done at least 30 battles, your champion Digimon should turn into him. As for further clarification on bonus conditions, most of the time, 2 are listed, in the above example with Andromon, he requires 30+ battles or 30+ learned techniques, but you only need 1 of those 2 requirements to satisfy the condition; there are also certain champion Digimon that require you to have a specific rookie Digimon as one of their bonus conditions (such as Kabuterimon, for example, of whom needs Kunemon), so having that appropriate rookie will effectively satisfy 1 of your requirements needed without having to do anything

    Ahh, good memories, good times...
    I had a couple of friends who my brother and I hung out with a lot, and when they got this game we all sunk COUNTLESS hours into it. Two of us started with Agumon, two started with Gabumon. We also had the Prima strategy guide, and tried to utilize it properly. Three of us ended up with Monochromon, but one of the Gabumon players got a Tyrannomon, which was wild to us given the small experiences. We all took our turns exploring around, recruiting for the city, and then, one by one, we had our Digimon die and be reborn.
    I decided, this time, to go for my (at the time favorite) Champion, Angemon, so following the guide, I got Patamon, and then my Angemon came to be. It was exciting. Looking through the Ultimates, I decided to go for what I felt was the easiest Ultimate to get (hint: it wasn't), Vademon. The only criteria listed was to be alive for a certain, rather long, period of time before Digivolution. But I thought, maybe if I get the stats for Vademon listed in the guide and make 0 mistakes that I would end up possibly get my Angemon to live long enough to be a Vademon. It was a rough few hours doing nothing but training, including the times for rest, getting food, bathroom trips, all that. I had two stats left to get to Vademon's level when the unthinkable happened. There was a freeze, and then the screen went dark around Angemon. I was sad, my Angemon was my buddy, and after all that, he- wait what? That's the Digivolution field! But I didn't reach Vademon's stats! Is...is it actually...? Did I get Vademon...? No. No, I was not fated to get Vademon (to this day, still never have).
    Instead, I got Phoenixmon.
    For those who do not know, in the Prima Strategy Guide had three Ultimates that had absolutely no details on how to get them in-game. One was MegaSeadramon, which Billiam outlined trying to get in this very video. The other two were HerculeesKabuterimon and Phoenixmon. We were kids without any access to even the somewhat primitive internet of the time. We had absolutely no way too know just what was required to get them. And yet without knowing how I got one of the two MEGAS in the game (Mega was not a thing in Digimon when the game was made so they were listed as Ultimates at the time but were still insanely busted).
    The older of our two friends actually stood up after the initial freak-out we all had, left the room, and wouldn't speak to or even LOOK AT me for a week, she was so angry I got her favorite Digimon and didn't know how it was done. She tried for weeks after that to get Phoenixmon the same way I did, getting Angemon and training to get Vademon's stats but never got Phoenixmon and eventually just gave up. I felt bad cause I didn't know what I did or how to fix it! She and I were eventually talking again when she got over her anger but still, haha.
    That Phoenixmon actually paved the way for me to nearly finish populating File City at the time. I explored aaaaaalll over the island, beating the tough bosses and recruiting a ton of Digimon. Remember how Billiam took 3 Digimon to beat Birdramon? Phoenixmon was extremely overpowered for that fight bar none. We were unstoppable too everything but the age counter. And that counter did run out. I actually was WAY over the limit to trigger Greymon when I did, and when I did...well, he was Phoenixmon's last fight. Immediately after winning, Phoenixmon passed away.
    I have never to this day been able to replicate getting Phoenixmon even knowing the requirements as we do now. And so I remember all of those days fondly as the years go by~

    12:50 Is there really a point on trying to get ANYTHING done in life, if eventually we all are going to die?
    Digimon: Teaching you the lessons that other games won't.
    17:50 This game is such a wild ride. Every stat, care mistake and the like count as a check-mark for your next evolution. There is no easy way to explain this but I will try:
    -You need to fulfill at least 3-4 conditions to be able to evolve.
    -Digimon have priorities. For example: Piyomon will have an easier time evolving into Birdramon rather than other Digimon even if they both share 3-4 or more conditions, should they tie.
    -The Digimon with the more conditions marked will be the one you evolve into.
    -Further extra conditions, such as techs, can be used as bonuses to ENSURE you can get the Digimon you want, as sometimes you might overlap them. Example: Meramon and Centarumon have pretty similar stats and you would end up getting either if you just go for stats alone, so you could for example ensure you get a Meramon by making care mistakes.

    In fact, answering "Yes" to the question at the beginning of the game when it asks if you already own a digivice is a malicious beginner's trap that actually sets the game to hard mode, making it 10% more picky about what stats you need to get an evolution you're trying for. I'm pretty sure that's not even in the Strategy guide, and I had NO IDEA that I had been making the game needlessly more frustrating for myself all these years until a streamer mentioned that last year.

So much so that I was kind of sad to find out that the competitive scene isn't very lively anymore, assuming it ever was.

      @@avavago as someone who preordered the ps4 versions I'd say that is where the competitive scene was. And several digimon included in the "complete edition" were either preorder dlc (black agumon and gabumon lines, some special agumon as well as cherubimon virus and beelzemon bm for original cybersleuth. And a couple NX digimon for hacker's memory. ) or even patched in (the Burst modes for the data squad digimon in original is an example. )
      Also from what I understand the complete edition allows you to use all the digimon that were in Hacker's memory in the original and they put some of the mechanics from hacker's memory into the original.
      The ps4 scene basically found what all the "best" teams were and just about all of online was that....that and hackers.
      I'm trying (and possibly failing) to say that the complete edition is just that. A complete version of both cybersleuth games. Games that haven't seen updates on ps4 in a long time and most likely won't see updates outside of stability for the other releases as well.
      Hopefully you find this information useful or enlightening.

Nostalgia aside, it's nice to see the game getting discussed still (Can A Game Be Too Complex by EmceeProphIt being a great video on Digimon World to check out), how fast this game can be speedrunned, all the remixes made for this games soundtrack over the years (with my personal favourite being Fly By Night by Marcus D) and the fact there are guides still being made on GameFAQs for this specific game even after 20 years is amazing. There may be new things being learned about the game, too, as I know Digimon World has bit of a history of having people discovering something new about it but I don't keep up with the Digimon World community to know if there is anything recently learned.

    8:31 Actually no, the requirements in the guidebook are correct, it only missing from Metalgreymon is that you could get 95% discipline OR 30 battles. The only thing that any strategy guide leaves out is the fact that you need 3 of the 4 requirements, Stats, Weight, Care Mistakes and Bonus, any combination of these 3 will make it evolve. Although the guide does kinda say this on page 52.
    If you had a Greymon with 60-70 weight, less than 10 care mistakes and 30 battles OR max disipline, I 100% gurantee you it will be a Metalgreymon, regardless of its stats.

    • @matthewkuscienko4616
      @matthewkuscienko4616 Před 3 lety

      That's mostly true, except that the high discipline is not actually a requirement for Metalgreymon. The only ultimates that use happiness or discipline as a bonus condition are Mamemon, MetalMamemon, Giromon, and Piximon. I've had multiple Metalgreymons in my time playing the game, and never once did discipline play a part in determining rather I'd get him or not, though it IS a bonus condition for Greymon.

    • @Gamewizzy
      @Gamewizzy Před 3 lety

      @@matthewkuscienko4616 95% Discipline absolutely is a ONE of the conditons for Metalgreymon, its important to remember the 3 of 4 rule, Stats, Weight, Care Mistakes and Bonus, if you have ANY 3 of those 4, you can ignore the 4th. You can achieve the Bonus conditions without disipline if:
      Your Greymon fought 30 battles, Metalgreymon has 2 bonus conditons. If so, disipline doesn't matter as the bonus if already fulfilled.
      OR
      ALL champions and ultimates have their bonus automatically fulfilled if they know more than a certain number of techniques/moves. In Metalgreymon's case, its 30. If so, you don't need 95 disipline or 30 battles. For example: if your Greymon knew 30+ techniques, had the correct stats and 0 care mistakes, it would would evolve into Metalgreymon. Even if it had the wrong weight.
      Also, Mamemon, MetalMamemon, Giromon and Piximon, only use 90-95 Happiness as a bonus, no disipline there. The other ultimates that have disipline are Andromon (95) and Phoenixmon (100) that have discipline as a bonus.

I have looked into the information online, and this is the first time I've ever heard of Phoenixmon, Andromon, or Metalgreymon having discipline as a bonus condition. Plus what you said about Piximon needing happiness rather than discipline contradicts what you said before about the guidebook being correct. Having said that, and I'm aware that certain things were left out when that book was written, but I'm still a little bit sceptical about what you said about which Digimon needing discipline, especially with your claim of Phoenixmon needing it, given that it's one Digimon that seems to have multiple contradictory sets of requirements that no one can 100% agree on.

    • @Gamewizzy
      @Gamewizzy Před 3 lety

      @@matthewkuscienko4616 Ok yeah, lemme word that better, most of whats in the book is correct, the main point was that "the guide lies", Yes, somethings are missing, like Metalgreymon's disiplince or its weight being 60-70, rather than just 65 or just wrong, like Piximon needing disipline. But if you need followed what IS in the book for Metalgreymon, it would work 100% of the time. If it didn't work, something was missing, like maybe he had only 2 of the 3 required conditions out of 4, (remember you need ALL the required stats for it to count as 1) or hes confused coz he said he got a Numemon while trying for MetalGreymon?
      I also went and tested Piximon's bonus, and it is Happiness and not Disipline, I had a Vegiemon, kept it max happiness, low discipline, never fed it so it would have 15 Care Mistakes and 1-10 weight, and immediately after the 15th time it was hungry, it evolved into Piximon.
      The best source for any evolutions would be www.phoenix-staffel.de/digimon/DigimonWorld/evolution.html , it's clear that old game magazines, especially from 2000 aren't exactly reliable, doubt that had the tools/time to fully test everything, even my old magazine I used for evo stats (Station Solutions Issue 58) has the same mistakes as the Prima, Metalgreymon's weight and discipline, Piximon needing discipline, coz I'd bet it likely copied the Prima guide.

    Me and my homie played this game so much when we were kids. Never got cool digimon. Never beat it either but it still is one of my favorite games. I've revisited it recently and knowing how to play makes it so much more fun

    I will always love my story as I was finishing Digimon World. It is such an odd game, but I'm glad that people can have an interesting and different road to the ending due to the partner changing and going down different branches.

    17:40 I got Phoenixmon on my first playthrough of the game and was so surprised; I didn't even have the guidebook yet which was my childhood's greatest achievement. I only had 4 Champions and barely had all the techniques too. However, it took a long time to get any ultimates and another Phoenixmon after that. I think the guide book actually contradicted of my method of actually getting Phoenixmon, especially since it has no mention of its requirements other than its overall stats.

      ......That is literally because the guidebook does NOT list what requirements you have to meet if you want a MegaSeadramon, Phoenixmon, or HerculesKabuterimon, and it's also the reason why if you look up guides on the internet on how to get any of these 3 Digimon, you tend to get contradictory information. In fact, the only information the guidebook explicitly gives you on how to get one of those 3 is telling you which Digimon will turn into each of them.

    This might sound weird but my favorite Digimon of all time is ChaosGallantmon, the evil version of Gallantmon.
    I’ve always found his color scheme cool and I like that he’s not a black clone like his previous evolutions, that makes him more unique.
    He’s also my favorite character in Digimon Rumble arena 2 so seeing ChaosGallantmon just reminds me of those nostalgic days when I played that game with my sister.
    ChaosGallantmon is the coolest and the most nostalgic Digimon to me and that’s why he’s my favorite.

      ChaosGallantmon is in that game? I didn’t know that. I’ve been thinking about playing Digimon World Dusk for a while since Lunamon is my 3rd favorite Digimon. Getting ChaosGallantmon is just the perfect motivation to play any Digimon game.

      I have a similar experience. Playing Digimon World DS made me appreciate the Dorumon line, especially Dorugoramon. His Thievish Claw attack is insane. I just dislike his rudolph nose

      DORUmon is an awesome Digimon! All of his forms are great specially his Mega forms Alphamon and DORUgoramon.
      Valdurmon is also a great Digimon, he’s gigantic and also Biyomon’s final Mega form, plus if he combines with Susanoomon they become Chronomon. He’s a powerful bird like Digimon with the strenght of a god.

    I feel like if the evolution requirements were more lax and there were in game hints on how to get certain evolutions, it'd go a long way to improving Digimon World 1's problems.
