Hello there, Leipzig native here, born and raised. It's so good to see American bloggers leaving their comfort zone of western Germany (plus Berlin) end exploring the wild east!

Loved your tour, loved the history sprinkled in throughout, it definitely gets my stamp of approval.
There's just one thing in this otherwise great video that felt somewhat wrong. You mentioned a few times how east Germany was "occupied" by the Soviet Union for 40 years, like in "era of soviet occupation". I honestly don't think that's quite the right word. I mean was western Germany "occupied" by the US, France and Britain? Not really, right?
East Germany was certainly in the Soviet area of influece of the time and of course they made sure to keep reliable local leaders in power and reacted with military force when that status was threatened (DDR 1953, Hungary 1956 and Czechoslowakia 1968). But the term "occupied" implies a constant visible presence of Soviet military projectig power and repression. And while that repression was certainly there, it came from local East German intitutions, mostly the infamous "Stasi" (ministry for state security) that covered everything from intelligence agency to secret police. They were the ones you got in trouble with, not the soviet military which of course had a significant presence in East Germany (as did western powers in West Germany) but mostly kept to their barracks. They didn't play a role in a citizen's every day life.
And something else bugs me when we talk about this period of time. The focus is almost always on the repressive system, its victims and how it was eventually overcome. And that is of course important to know. But it's just half the picture. The other half is normal people, living a normal life, finding their little free spaces in the mesh of the system, people writing literature and music (some of my favourite music is from that time) with lyrics smart and cryptic enough to get through the censorship. It wasn't this second dark age it is sometimes portrayed as.
I'm glad it's past, I'm glad Germany is reunited and I hope that one day when we talk about these 40 years, we'll see the whole picture.

The date for St. Thomas Church in Leipzig is usually given as 1212 (which is in Thirteen Century) although there may have an earlier building. The structures there have changed several times over the centuries. 1165 is the year given for St. Nicholas Church and it is generally considered to be older than St. Thomas.
The new city hall isn't new, it is from 1905 & in my opinion the most beatiful city hall I've seen!!! & it seems you missed out a few of the other highlights Leipzig has to offer, but I hope you enjoyed it anyway in my hometown.

@@MaxandSidney If you would visit when it's warmer I would absolutely recommend a boat tour, the Zoo is awarded for years now 2nd best in Europe, best in Germany & is really unique, the cotton mill factory which is actually now art an exhibit (for free) & there are more cultural /historic places to visit but Leipzig has not only many parks, a forest but is also surrounded by lakes (ex open pit coal mines)

It’s very easy to walk around the city center, and there is a lot of transportation options to explore the neighborhoods as well. It is a little less expensive than the bigger cities, but Germany in general is more expensive than a lot of other European countries. Hope this is helpful, thanks so much for watching!
@@MaxandSidney Is Germany really? Because I know that Scandinavia is more expensive & so is Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands & probably France. So only east Europe is for sure much cheaper.
@@MaxandSidney Fantastic place doesn't seem to be as big as Munich who has been in and it was complicated for me to find my way on both tram and bus and unsociable with ticket sales of tickets that you have to do yourself!!
Kanksje becomes my destination for several days and easy to go on a trip to the city to buy and visit the zoo and sits over a movie in the best screening of the cinema.
Should also small travel connections in the city center uncomplicated by tram and bus and it has a night bus that one can be good not having to cost a lot at night especially on weekends !?
Impressed by your journey so going to ask a question why should not have the same as you and for only a good traveler who has traveled many times but still worries does not leave and revolves about (economy,travel test,illnesses,small colds,collected cards for all cards in one,Smart Iphone for surfing)
Do you find that there are also more places for power charging to both smart Iphone and tablet are several places around Leipzig that can provide more need for pictures and use of cameras in parks and city and museum as well if you are going to be tough!?
