i know this video is from 2014 but thank you. It was very helpful and its great listening to videos where the person is just a normal speaking person, no mumbo jumbo no technical words, just do this and this. thanks mate!
This looks a lot easier than I was imagining. I'm still new to maintenance of a vehicle. This showed how simple it actually is for me, and now i don't feel like I need to pay some mechanic to do it. Just make sure I have the tools. Thanks!
Just to help everybody out, there is an update kit that has a smaller idler pulley on the tensioner assembly. At a parts store the oe tensioner part#38167 and belt# 25060868. With the updated tensioner it takes a shorter belt#25060863 and tensioner #39120. The difference in the belt lengths isn't much but the parts do go hand in hand with each other. So be sure to check that both parts are updated or both are oe parts.
@@bloodybill It'll run with the old belt because there's a tensioner that will self-adjust, but the tension will be slightly wrong due to using the wrong belt size. I got a "kit" from Rockauto, Gates belt & tensioner, $60.
I have a 06 liberty, this video was helpful in replacing my tensioner. However mine took a 13mm socket instead of the half inch. Not sure if this changed between years but just for other viewers to help prevent stripping the bolt. Thanks for the video
It's a 13mm wrench required, not 1/2" 1/2" is "almost" 13mm so the error is understandable. But for sure that bolt, like all the others in this engine, is metric. Pro tip, run the engine to operating temp before attempting to break the bolt free. Doing so reduces the chance you'll break the bolt off in the block. The bolt torque is 30 ft-lbs. ie. it doesn't go back in super-tight!!!! Use a torque wrench if you can. I put a small drop of blue threadlock on just to be sure...
This is a great video I just didn’t know how to take the tension off of the belt. Also the bolt on my 06 libety is a 13mm not a half inch. They both fit but I rounded the bolt using a half inch. A thirteen is just a smidge tighter
im going to try by passing the compressor ...... my problem is the compressor is rattling and i dont wanna go used so well see what happens ill keep you guys in tune
My 2006 Jeep Liberty has gone thru 6 A/C compressors in the last 17 mos, the last one was a new one (according to the dealer) and lasted 12 mos and 2 weeks, so the first 5 lasted a couple weeks to a month or so, went out again a few weeks ago and now it is setting in Walmart's parking lot...it does absolute nothing! The dealer does not want to help either! CarX only wants to put in another compressor.
Mine just started to actually fall apart. The belt fell off the track (likely because the tensioner was junk), immediately lost power steering, overheated and gave me trouble starting.
Did you change it and eliminate the noise? I would like you to upload the video already with the new tensor without being heard the blow so that my colleagues see the solution of the problem, thanks.

Glad to hear it! I'm sure you can do it, good luck!

Part#38167
It runs just fine with the old belt. This is still some bull crap out of Mopar to change the size of the idler pulley.

thickheart28 Thanks for the info!
thickheart28 does The 13" work for every jeep.?
Thanks, I just started hearing a rattling after I replaced the surp. belt , was only when ac was on. This fits what I keep reading online.
RAVENNIITE We thought our AC was making the noise at first too.

Glad this helped, and good call on the metric size. Makes a lot of sense, sorry about your bolt!
Looks like the same part that comes on my 05 grand Cherokee 4.7 , which seems oddly difficult to remove!
im going to try by passing the compressor ...... my problem is the compressor is rattling and i dont wanna go used so well see what happens ill keep you guys in tune
removed the compressor entirely and im happy. its a winter beater

what goes bad on the tensioner? what would i look for besides the noise
viewer I think it just wears over time. Mine was making noise. Maybe if you notice it shaking too much?
Mine just started to actually fall apart. The belt fell off the track (likely because the tensioner was junk), immediately lost power steering, overheated and gave me trouble starting.
Around What mileage did you replace this
Michael boyd don't remember at this point. I'm sure over 100k.
Did you change the tensioner because the noise was heard when the air conditioner came in?
Edder Gongora thats correct

Edder Gongora it fixed the problem from my memory. I no longer own this car.
just bought a smaller belt
Would have been nice if you showed what
Sorry, i don't follow.
0:45 wtf dude
