      @TheAndrewlawlrence Před 8 lety +10

+darkservantofheaven Nope. That sounds fucking horrible. The style of this story comes from what you don't see. What they don't show you lends to the power of the emotion you feel between Spike and Vicious. Do you want to see Julia and find out she's just another random throw away love interest? There is no way you could write those characters as EPIC as they are portrayed in Cowboy Bebops poetic story telling. Writing backwards is always a mistake and would just lead to muddling the story.

    another fun a facts:
spike died at the age of 27 because of the 27 club.
its suspected that vicious used red eye drug.
spike believed in the Bushido code, the way of a samurai ( all is a dream and that he’s already dead).
Mao(their mentor) said: “if Spike were here you would never have done this” - so possibly Spike’s compassionate side (raucous laughter) kept Vicious’ insanity.

Fact 28 corrections: "Tomato" is not the name of her computer. It's the name of the kid who made her computer; It was revealed in the cowboy bebop manga. Also, that's not a "box that it stands on" it's the case... because it's a home-build... it's actually a popular computer-nerd gag (i.e. that you spend all of your money maximizing your specs... then must keep it in a cereal box)
Fact 29 correction: the katakana "tomato" is written in red, you circled the wrong thing.

Non anime fans like Cowboy Bebop because its a very grounded anime that doesn't alienate its audience. The themes presented in the show are all familiar to most audiences. (Old west, noir detectives, kung fu etc)
The show takes place in a fantastical future filled with advanced technology, yet its still the near(2071) future and despite mostly being in space there's no crazy alien worlds or Star Wars tier aliens walking around like Space Dandy for example.
It presents the concept of long distant space travel as like the old west full of cowboys(bounty hunters) and dusty saloon towns. There's no magic or supernatural powers/creatures, just people fighting with their fists and shooting guns. Also the show is episodic for the most part, there's no overarching plot and what little development that takes place is with the characters.
The entire presentation of the show is phenomenal. It's an Eastern developed show yet it still has this groovy jazz soundtrack. No K pop sounding shit that makes you feel like you're watching some girly cartoon. The art style has this really gritty natural feel/flow to it and the character design/style resembles actual human beings, none of that light bulb socket eyes and giant heads. Basically uses the same techniques Miyazaki uses in his films to make you connect with his characters and not alienate the audience. If you didn't feel bad for Chihiro during Spirited Away then you're a god damn liar
Even if it's reached that "overrated" status with people, its still a phenomenal show and sometimes I'm still amazed on how they made parts of it. I have nothing but good things to say about it.

More fun facts. The death flags: In session 1, Katerina and Asimov foreshadowed Spike and Julia's endgame (i.e. their deaths). Both Katerina and Spike wished to escape the life of crime they led and have a new life elsewhere with their partner.
Katerina expresses her wish in Session 1.
Katerina: I can finally escape the low life I've had here. I can finally live happily on Mars.
In session 25, we are shown a flashback of Spike expressing this same wish that Katerina had.
Spike: We'll leave here. We'll escape from this world.
Julia: And then what are we going to do?
Spike: Just live a life of freedom somewhere. Just like watching a dream...
“Road to the West” played just before Asimov and Katerina died, and again just before Spike went to see Julia, thus linking the two stories. These two scenes are the only times the song is ever used in the entire series. These two scenes are also visually linked (both include dogfights in outer space and show similar shots of Spike and the Swordfish II and an armed fleet that will ultimate prevent the lovers escape).
Btw, going west is a reference to going towards death.
Both Katerina and Spike have the realization that they will never get the Happily Ever After they always wanted. Katerina has her realization just before she dies when a fleet of cops block her and Asimov's escape. Spike has his realization while Julia is holding him at the cemetery. He has just escaped a fleet of syndicate assassins and knows more will be on the way. He knows they won't be able to escape in the long run. Both Katerina and Spike get the same expressions on their faces when they have their realizations. The dialogue said in one scene answers the dialogue said in the other, as if Katerina were reading out Spike's thoughts.
Julia to Spike: Let's just run away somewhere. Truly escape from this world and go somewhere no one else is... Just the two of us...
Katerina: We can't run anymore. There's no way we can get away.
Both Katerina and Spike witnessed the death of their partner. Both their partners were shot to death. Both hold their partners' body in their arms.
Both Katerina and Spike get slashed across the abdomen which resulted in something red spilling out. Both their stories end with a pull out shot of their death scene. [Check out the scenes side by side. Watch Katerina and Asimov's last scene and then the scene where Spike fights the syndicate fleet, the scene where he reunites with Julia, the scene when Julia's dies and Spike's final scenes. The visual evidence is very compelling. There are multiple visual parallels.]
In session 3, Spike walks by a film screen which reads only a true samurai can kill him like the... [the rest is obscured by Spike's body]. Vicious, for all his faults, was a true warrior and fatally wounded Spike with a katana.
In session 5, Spike got the ace of spades at the end of the episode. That is the death card.
In session 13, during an auditory flashback we hear Vicious tell Spike that he is the only one that can kill him. This is again brought up in session 26, just before the two face off. Vicious, again, proclaims that he is the only one who can kill Spike and set him free.
In Session 13, during a flashback sequence Spike and Julia discuss his eyes.
Spike: My left eye sees the past...
Julia: Then what about your right eye...?
Spike then wakes up in the snow having been recently shot with a tranquilizer gun. The camera focuses on his right eye. Spike finds a crow standing on his chest. He asks the crow a question.
    Spike: Which way is west?
[The crow caws loudly before spreading it's black wings and flying away]
A crow is an omen of death. Also, there are various cultures (Ancient Egyptian, Jewish, Celtic, Chinese, etc.) in which death is associated with going west.
In session 13, Faye attempts to stop Gren from going to face Vicious by holding him at gunpoint and then shooting her gun. Gren goes anyway and is killed by Vicious. The same thing happens with Spike in session 26.
In session 16, Jet's ex-partner makes this ominous assertion.
Fad: The people that go against the syndicate lose, Jet. They lose big. Either they give up like you did or they die young.
In session 17, after eating a special mushroom Spike hallucinates that he is climbing up a stairway that stretches up above and leads to a glowing white entrance. He comes across an informative frog that lets him know where he is headed.
Frog: Hey, mister. This is a stairway to heaven. You know that, right?
In session 21, Jet tells Meifa there's no way out.
Jet: It's impossible for someone to leave when they know that much. Once you join a syndicate they own you forever.
In Session 1, Laughing Bull foretells of Spike's death being brought on by a woman.
Laughing Bull: Swimming bird will meet a woman. The bird will be hunted by this woman. And then death.
    Spike: One more time.
    Laughing Bull: What's that?
Spike: I was killed once before by a woman.
Spike is speaking of Julia. From the first episode Laughing Bull has foreshadowed that Spike will die and that his death will be connected to a woman.
In Knockin' on Heaven’s Door, Spike almost dies and Laughing Bull tells him it is not yet his time.
Laughing Bull: It was not a good day for you to die, so you did not. That is all.
Laughing Bull also tells Spike that the past, present and future all all connected.
Laughing Bull: Know this Swimming Bird, this blue eye perceives all things conjoined. The past, the future, and the present. Everything flows and all is connected. This eye is not merely seeing reality. It is touching the truth. Open the eye of truth... There is nothing to fear.
Spike: Yeah... I know what you mean.
In session 26, Laughing Bull predicts Spike's imminent death the scene directly after Julia dies. When Jet denies this Laughing Bull tells him not to fear death.
Laughing Bull: Do not fear Death. Death is always at our side. When we show fear, it jumps at us faster than light. But, if we do not show fear, it casts its eye upon us gently and then guides us into infinity...
When Spike leaves the Bebop to confront Vicious the song "See You Space Cowboy" plays. The lyrics begin over romantic images of Spike and Julia together.
    "Everything is already over",
    You say with closed ears
    The words only flow
    Towards a tomorrow without peace
    "There's nothing that won't change"
    Even if my life ends
    This love will not disappear
It's something that will live forever
Even if dreams are hidden in darkness
    I got a rainbow
    Rainbow in your hands...
The song is a proclamation of undying love which implies that Spike and Julia will be together again in the afterlife.
In the penultimate scene of the series Spike finally sees Julia with his eye that sees his present.
Julia is cast in a white glowing light.
We hear Julia's last words, "It's all a dream."
We see Spike reflected in her *blue eye*.
Spike agrees with her, "Yeah. Just a bad dream."
He's still looking into her blue eye.
Then everything is engulfed in a white light.
    Everything fades to white.
Next scene is of Spike walking down the stairs. Spike smiles, does the finger gun, "bang." and he's down. The entire syndicate is now cast in a white light.
The song "Blue" begins to play:
Don't wake me from the dream
    It's really everything it seems
    I'm so free
No black and white in the blue
    Everything is clearer now
Life is just a dream, you know
    That's never-ending
    I'm ascending
There is a tone switch from dreams being "bad" to dreams being something you never want to be woken from. When Spike was engulfed by the white light, he had a revelation. He knows he is going to a better place. He knows he is going to be with Julia again. He dies happy and at peace.
At the very end we see a star go out but never fall.
In session 13, Laughing Bull said that a falling star was a pitiful soul who could not find his way to the great other.
Child: A star just fell from the sky.
Laughing Bull: That is not an ordinary star, my son. That star is the tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battles somewhere on this planet.
    Child: What warrior is it?
Laughing Bull: A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm. Where the great spirit awaits us all.
Spike makes it to the spirit that awaits us all. His star goes out. He is free.

Just an update, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens (Winter anime 2018) is largely influenced by Comboy Bebop with a lot of character revisions that separates it from the latter, which admittedly is a 'dark sci-fi story' about a man burdened by a past and who seems to be as much in search for 'a reason to die' as he is for a 'reason to go on.' BUT some contrasts and similarities are just SO striking I'm glad I watched both series... (Hakata's like a reincarnation fanfic of Cowboy Bebop... with a FUNNY TWIST!) Let me enumerate briefly:
In Hakata for example (MAJOR SPOILERS WARNING):
Banba Zenji has the same hairstyle as Spike Spiegel. He's a hitman-for-hire and private eye who may or may not accept money in killing his targets (not always motivated by money). He's kinda overprotective so he kills for personal reasons too (i.e revenge). His ex gf, Sayuri, was a hitman hired to kill him but becoz of it, he was traumatized and gave up dating and womanizing (err... fear of betrayal?). They became 'just friends' and continued to support each other. Like Spike, he's kinda well-built (but more lean n thin) and is a f*cking, bloody, badass killer too. But unlike Spike, he's obsessed with baseball, spicy pollock roe, and tonkotsu ramen. His 'other' identity uses a samurai sword, which earned him the reputation of being the most feared 'hitman of hitmen' of Fukuoka, Japan. Most of the time he looks oblivious but plans ahead and shows more patience and maturity (a departure from Spike's character). Actually, he's only moody when it comes to baseball and has this crazy fetish for cultural festivals (anti-mainstream/Tokyo POV). Like Spike he doesn't explain his past nor talk about his reasons for being a hitman, though he mentions that his childhood dream was to be a pro baseball player... (kinda off-tangent , hence the mystery).
Lin-chan is Banba's partner and he's a GUY who cross-dresses as a HOT, BLONDE BABE (err... no offense but you might end up a 'confused dick' same way Griffith has been doing that for Berserk). He's got the same facial features and hair as Julia (it must be the the bangs!) but he wears the same colors as Faye Valentine and also sports the same thigh-high stockings and heels. (In other words, Lin is a cross between Julia n Faye--and maybe a little of Ed). It's funny how Banba displays a tenderness to him that he doesn't show anyone else and is literally attached to him (But Lin leaves Banba a BYE-BYE note, resembling a scene in Cowboy Bebop). Lin's backstory, though, is more thoroughly explored. Forced into a Chinese assassination camp at age 9, he was tortured n betrayed and, like Faye, literally lost his connection to any family or past he could go back to. Tbh, becoz Lin is cuter than a girl, we can't blame Banba for flirting (low-key) and twice he was mistaken for Banba's lover. There was some teasing as well, as he and Banba seem to have endless husband-wife spats in and out of the baseball field. Although they live in the same office-apartment, there is clearly NO YAOI here and NO REASON either to define him as "trap." They're just REALLY cute together. Story-wise, Lin is an endearing character, a cold-blooded knife wielder who's a really badass hitman in many ways.
Enokida is like Ed but older. He's a 23-yr-old Kaneki-looking, child-like computer wiz/hacker who loves wire-tapping, using his red-back spider 'bugs.'
The rest of the group is made up of two LGBT torturers-avengers, a diligent police detective, a corpse-dealing cosmetic surgeon, a kleptomaniac pickpocket, and a naive, newbie part-timer who gets unlucky 24/7.
Basically Banba and Lin had to fight against human traffickers, mafia underlings, and other assassins for hire with the help of a larger support (but independent) group made up of the above. The series has implied rape and there's bloody gore but balanced by emphasis on the group's friendship n bonding moments during baseball. Characters go through trust and betrayal issues. Basically I love Hakata MORE becoz the narrative is straightforward, simple, and the interactions are funny, interesting, and occasionally smart. There is romance but not between male x female (?!). It's like an IRONIC TWIST to the (sometimes offensive) macho masculinity of Cowboy Bebop (heck cowboys remind me now of 'Brokeback Mountain'). It's a funny series with a lot of action, suspense and the MUSIC is so reminiscent of Bebop... ^_^ .
There are just so many interesting contrasts. The light-hearted moments in Hakata Tonkotsu are balanced by the dark and angsty side of underworld crime MINUS the Bebop manic-depressive atmosphere and the disturbing drugs and sex subliminals (ep. 1 first few seconds: ships looking like sperm entering a diaphragm, etc.) Symbolically Bebop's 'red against a gray backdrop' is retained in Hakata with the rose being replaced by Lin's red skirt and Banba's red mini-Cooper against a black-and-white view of the city showing Banba and Lin gazing at the night lights. (It reinvents Bebop's 'macho' version of romance, if anything.) It makes no "new genre" claim (to hell with that) and, thankfully, each episode is directly related to the characters... admitting of course, that Bebop's looser narrative has a logic and charm on its own.
Philosophically, you also get a version of the existentialist claims in Bebop but in reverse, thru Banba's words: "Past is past. People get angry and hurt, but somewhere down the line you have to trust again because life gets more interesting that way." Unlike Spike (who seems to deflect his own misery by looking at others' miseries), Banba is not so stuck in the past (though his backstory is not yet written) and rather, wants to be the 'home' that Lin returns to as he helps his partner move on.
And best of all, just like Cowboy Bebop, the music just sweeps you off your feet. ^_^
By the way, sorry for the extra-looong analysis. I LOVE Cowboy Bebop-inspired anime, and wishes for a remake of the original if that's possible. Die-hard fans die hard, eh? ^_^

unless #27 is officially confirmed by the writer somewhere, I believe it is wrong. because the the box under Ed's computer is just a tomato box, the Kanji/Chinese character/汉字 means "Quality assurance". "番茄" on the right side is tomato in Kanji/Chinese character/汉字. If you go to a wet market in Japan or China you'll see cardboard box like that as container for vegetables and other stuff.
