I don’t think Whitacre would just end it on that chord for no reason. It’s saying something. Like how our history is never over, or how our history isn’t just glorious patriotism, it’s also dark and has things that make us uncomfortable. This man knows how to make music, if he’s gonna break a rule, it’s gonna have purpose.
Also “bravery” doesn’t come without fear so maybe the chord is meant to do imitate the mixed emotions someone feels when they need to be brave.
He's not breaking any rules. The "rules" of Mozart and Beethoven have been outdated for nearly 150 years now. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if he intended for the tension to highlight some meaning.
Eorzat I mean “rules” as in the idea that music is supposed to resolve. Music doesn’t HAVE to do that but when it doesn’t, it should have a reason if that makes sense. I agree that those rules are outdated
Em C There doesn’t need to be a reason for music to not resolve either. That’s literally what extended tonality and “color” is. If you consider what a Cmaj13 chord is, it’s every note in the diatonic scale which means that there’s also a lot of dissonances in that chord such as the tritone, sevenths, seconds, and so on. All these dissonances aren’t typically resolved. You simply hear the chord on its own for its unique color.
The idea of resolution and tension is something that’s particularly implicit in tonal functional harmony. However, we’ve long stepped away from that. Many composers use tension simply for the color of the chord, and that’s all that Whitacre does.
I don’t think it’s anything more than him quoting himself. It’s the same chord from Cloudburst at the start of the “cloudburst” movement.
I might be going on a stretch here, but the eeriness of this song intermixed with its melodic beauty symbolizes the USA’s patriotic notions and dark history/times. Anyone else think that?
I think he was trying to say something with that last chord.
Dustin Martin that’s what I’m saying!!
Absolutely!! You can hear the strife and conflict and victories and freedom and power, all of it in those last measures. Stunning
I think he was saying, "Look mommy, I discovered tone clusters. Fuck functional harmony!"
This is "The Anacreontic Song" an old English song before America exist as a nation. Even though america are so keen to represent themself from things with english heritage like useing english names like john, jack , james ,boby etc . using english traditional song folk like the anacreontic song and even amaizing grace. Tell me where is here the patriotizem?
1:52 EXCUSE ME PRINCESS
Micah Wosilius (my profile pic is me and my bf before our concert) as a soprano first I have to do that. We even sang a wicked medley and no one mourns the Wixked was death
Lol that would be me-1:52
*Every soprano ever*
Eric's like I could make this ending make sense, but ima flex on everyone that cant understand or fathom how to correctly end it.
Madlad.
Eric Whitacre came to this year's TMEA convention and this was one of the songs we sang during our hour with him. I wish I had this one in my hands. It's amazing.
3rd to last measure got me like “Was that Cloudburst?!”
It’s actually a different piece ;) not cloudburst
Yes it’s the same chord from cloudburst
@@cooperaiken8148it’s also hope faith life love
So moving! The clashing and unique ways that the parts were written create such a haunting, yet patriotic rendition of this classic song. It shows the hurt that our country has been through, and shows that we still are fighting.
I am LIVING for these new Whitacre arrangements! Thank you so much for posting them!
I need this version to be performed at every sporting event ever.
he was definitely making a statement with that last chord. all that tension on “brave”. makes you wonder which i think was his intent.
Something else to think about - it’s the same cluster from his piece “Hope, faith, life, love”
I think it represent our country's darkest times
@@dansullivanstudios and cloudburst
such a beautiful arrangement & a fantastic top C from the soloist!
I love Eric Whitacre's pieces including this as much as every other choir geek and I get cluster chords are his thing, but that last chord just didn't sit well with me.
C13(#11)
Myron Cuenca That’s my favorite thing about the whole song!! But I can see where you’re coming from
i dont know how i feel about this chord
I personally think that last chord is SO COOL! :D
Myron Cuenca hhahuayUhwu. huw
best arrangement ever
Page 6 measure 30. Idk why but I just melt when I hear male chords (tenors down to bass) sing those notes. 💛🖤💛
I know right?! when I first heard it chills shot down my entire body
dear god we're singing a similar arrangement to this in choir and i can already feel my vocal chords being absolutely degenerated to atoms
This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard😍
Beyond phenomenal
Love the arrangement!
This. Is. Amazing!!
Love this arrangement!
Whitacre is literally a genius. I love him. I love this. Aaaaaaa
My choir in my school are singing this for next years concert
All of page 8 is genius!
If you wear earbuds or airpods (wired or bluetooth),,, at the end it sounds... just magical...
that’s just the craziest shit iv ever heard in my life. a masterpiece
That top C though...
Matthew Watts It sent chills down my spine
that low C though....
if i ever tried to hit that high c i think my voice would break
i can hit that no problem counter-tenor
Joseph Jerand good for you??
Joseph Jerand just because you’re 10 years old and an unchanged voice, that doesn’t make you a countertenor. you’re a cambiata
This is "The Anacreontic Song" an old English song before America exist as a nation. Even though america are so keen to represent themself ueing english traditional song folk like the anacreontic song and even amaizing grace. Even though this arangament is awesome
YES!!! SO GOOD
the chords from 1:28 onwards.... chefs kiss
I like the low C2 the Basses hit at the. In general I love the C13#11 they used at the end.
Gorgeous!!
He just be doin things, they just let him do whatever
Holy damn, such wow
I am in love, can someone please just come like slap me back into reality?
Wow
Something very Appalachian Spring in those final three bars.
the last chord sounds how a tv test screen looks
Is it bad I can hit that top note at 1:52? Just a small question-
Crysti Alto no
No lol me too it’s a gift, use it!
Oklahoma All-State selection!
Disney style for sure
What is that last note for the bass 2s?
「The Flashbolter」 The Bass 2’s divide into C2 and G2 (and optional C3). Incredibly low!
I have to sing this peice this friday
For those of you all that say the rendition was good until the final chord...well, just know that maybe that's the whole point. I personally think it's supposed to represent the still ongoing unrest presently in our nation and how we still need a lot more time and change before we can earn our consonant final chord of a harmonious nation.
That is… a choice
I absolutely ADORE Eric Whitacre’s work but I have to say for a piece usually treated with the utmost sensitivity, I think he went too precious and whimsical with some of these rhythms and chord structures here. There needs to be less ornamentation and (I hate this word but) more conservative melodic lines. The last chord didn’t make sense to me either.
Michael Risacher it’s not a great song to begin with, musically. I say the weirder the better
I heard this on TikTok!
Where have y'all been my whole life? You need to be in the Superbowl!
What about now?
ayHuuay
The ending........
I love it - except the last chord. That's just... meh, I don't like that ending
Necroma_HD the ending is like so perfect wtf, out a good pair of headphones on, and listen to this song, that ending that way it builds up so much energy, then releases it when the crescendo is breath taking
@@feelsforjameel1397 It's not a cadence and it's every note in the scale, that's why it's weird
The ending also uses the same chord cluster from
His piece “Hope, faith, life, love”. Something to think about
It surprised me and I didn't like it at first because it didn't feel final... but if it's meant to mean something deeper, then I don't dislike it at all.
Well that was.....different. ☺
I like some of his stuff...but a little goes a long way....maybe 1 piece per occasional concerts....couldn't sit through whole concert of his music....I don't think anyway. Admirable writer....I wonder what kind of person he is?
He’s actually an insufferable douche 😂😂
@@dansullivanstudios O, that's an F in chat- 😂😂😂
My choir did a half-day workshop with him a few years back. He's a lovely guy. Humble and helpful.
My choir sang this on tik tok and it got over 1 mil views
AIR FORCE ONE HLEP 뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로
대한민국 사랑합니다 미국 사랑합니다 레고 닌자고 무비 사랑 미국 국가
All banana pudding
Last chord ruins the anthem
That's entirely the point
It was good till the ending 🤢
You know jack shit about music then
No.
I am a huge fan but this is not the Banner. He dropped the ball on this one.
People usually take issue with the ending
I don't like it
I don't love this
just big and greedy
