- In an early season outing for Steve Ovett on 7th July 1982, just 7 months after a near career ending injury, he runs and wins a 2000m in Oslo in 4:57.71. I think it was the UK record at the time, and was about a second faster than Coe's time over the same distance a few weeks earlier in Bordeaux. Strangely enough they both beat Wessinghage in their respective races, and he was to later in the year set the European Record over the distance of 4:52.20!
"Lots of British interest." Yes Andy Norman insisted that everyone of his clients turn up and get paid or there is no Ovett!
Brilliant! Thanks for uploading this Deano! I've never seen this race before. This was just before the Crystal Palace 3,000m race where Dave Moorcroft broke the European record and Steve sunk to a disappointing 10th. I had no idea he was in this kind of good form only 10 days earlier.
i guess Ovett could have broken the WR at 2000m, if he had tried. But he wasn't interested.
Ovett never the same after his collision with the Church Railing he had back problems & the explosive kick 1977 World Cup 800m Moscow 2nd lap inside 51 secs was never evident again still World Class but not what he was
I used to love watching Steve Ovett when I was a kid
One of the more relaxed 4.57 2000's you will ever see.
Great run, brilliant memories of a class athlete that was Steve Ovett.
Great to hear Ron pickering

Non-Olympic distances are meaningless.
