    Option 3 with the lacquer is a really good idea, I do think the interior could do with a clean though just for practicality sake, it would be great to see this thing functioning as intended, if there was to be any modifications, maybe just do add ons that Richard didn’t have time to do or didn’t make up his mind on etc to truly emphasise on the current design and character to bring it to its full potential! I’d love to see the other 2 cars from that special particularly the F-Type and I’d be very interested to see the damage on the Maserati.

    Skynet got one indication that Hammond was in it and thought it must have been in a crash!
    Just kidding, Hamster absolutely nailed the work on that car and what an absolute strange but wonderful beast

    #3!!!
    BTW- The fact that you had in back already in enough time to film/produce and post this video the day after it aired? Confirms for me how long ago it was filmed….that and the fact that JC talked about Lightfoot dying that day (May 2023). Took a long while to get this one to us….think it was worth it!

      The special for me was interesting however ( that is my opinion) it is not on the level on the previous ones. However it was nice to see a little bit like an homage to two of the grand tour specials: This being the Nike one ( with the rafts) and a small bit of the Vietnam one ( with the modifications of the back wheels and a rudder for stiridge).Also it is kind of poetic that the special had gone full circle. They started with the Botswana one when they were unable to enter Zimbabwe due to the BBC not being allowed, and now they will finish in Zimbabwe.

  • @ericmci
    @ericmci Před 2 měsíci +22

    Option 4: Service it and fully convert it into a fully capable Sterrato killer on a decent budget. One of the things missing from the Sand Job special was the process and level at which this car was prepared for the journey. It just seemed like it showed up with stuff on it- a couple of air filters and bigger tires. Was there even any suspension work? Certainly nothing was done to secure key systems for the trip- skid plates- wiring protection etc. Go through it make it truly impressive Rally Tour car. Aston RT

    • @Yvolve
      @Yvolve Před 2 měsíci +5

      Have you seen it? Each car has a massive skid plate, otherwise it would've been a 5 minute episode. They go over the mods and as you can tell from the stance, they did suspension on them. They even go into it at the start. The point was to make these on a budget and it they were super reliable, the episode would be very, very boring.
      The work is done by a shop they hire. Hadrian, Hammond's landlord for his workshop, has done many of the conversions over the year. You never get to see them for this reason, they always just show up and explain the mods. Ever time it is shown, it is all scripted of course. Mongolia was the only time they equally put the work in, along with the budget Italian sports car service in one of the later Top Gear seasons. Yes, this is Grand Tour, but the production team is 95% Top Gear crew. Same deal, different name.
      The skid plate on the Aston hid the frame you can now see, which supports the farm equipment he puts on. That is a lot of work to get it to function on a unibody car.

    I’m torn. I would say spray clear over it and don’t touch it however, we don’t know about the cars in the last special. The final 3 cars to me need to placed in a truly special place. Automotive museum. But somewhere to remember the golden age of automotive television. The trio has a special place in my heart. I had planned for a couple of years to go to the UK and see a taping of the show and when we bought tickets to go the next month the end of what I call the OG top gear was over. As far as the Aston I’m sure we will love whatever Richard decides to do with it

    Option 3 - to reserve the story, the condition, the adventure its been on. Not many of the Top Gear/Grand Tour specials make it back properly. By choosing option 3, you choose to let its character shine, despite some engine mishaps and electrical faults, and all the dust.

    It's quite appropriate that the Aston DB9 was the car saved from the penultimate episode. The first ever Top Gear 'Challenge' episode (which is basically what spawned the whole challanges and specials type episodes) was the DB9 vs. Train way back in the first episode of season 4 (almost 20 years ago!).

    Option 2 would be sick, there's another vantage that gets used in rallies across the UK (been round GoodWood forest stage a few times too) and it's great to see as no-one expects it. Also, with option 3 it'd never see the road properly again and there's enough historic TG and Grand Tour cars in the archive to maintain the boys' legacy.

    Quite surprised to see the Aston will be kept, after watched the special and all the problems it have.
    From my side, I would like to see the option number 2, because I liked to see the Subaru getting a new life after the Scandi Flick and would be nice to see the same for the Aston.
    A suggestion of future content is a video with this car with Clarkson's Bentley from Madagascar's special.

    Imagine, within 10 years, we will have a 'Top Grand Tour' museum filled with all the cars the trio worked with over the years. We might have the unkillable Toyota, Oliver, sports lorry, Dodge Challenger Demon, the MFB, the wreckage of the Rimac Concept One, the list just goes on and on.

    I would restore the internals to ensure that it will run reliably, but preserve the exterior/interior as it is. As Richard said, it is now more than it was and that is through it's story. That story is what must be preserved.

    I think it would be sad if it just sat around in some museum or garage. I would like to see it mended into what it was at the beginning of the journey (tent included) and used on the channel to make trips in other challenging environments. Having the sand and scuffs preserved would be a nice touch too.
