  • Another engine from the free pile! this one is an absolute behemoth, a B&S model 23 FB. Lets try a cold start and a slow idle. Enjoy!

Hello again ! urs sounds pretty good. If the high voltage side of mag craps out on you, you can
take wire to points and hook to one side of auto style ignition coil. other side of coil goes to
points. what ur doing is using the primary winding of the magneto to furnish current for the
ignition coil.My eng. has a short and tapered shaft for a generator or pump.

It could not idle as slow as it wants to cause I later found out the plug was fouled. watch my restoration video to see an even slower idle.

Be careful with how often you run it that slow, the oil system in this engine series does have a minimum operating range that has to be met in order for the oil to properly make its way around the crankcase. Found that out when I was rebuilding the model 14 on my 50s Simplicity 2 wheel tractor.

I need to remember to take a picture of my model 14 beside the model 23 that I have. 5hp vs. 9hp

Do you have any issues with the gas leaking out of the bottom of carb? Where the air filter attachment goes?

I've recently purchased one just yesterday, but can't yet tell where the gas tank is located, unless the filter is the tank.

The tanks are usually huge and on the right side of the engine above the breather, if you can’t find a tank on it then there is not a tank on it

What type of oil does it require, oil leaked out of mine as I was transporting it home on its side from the trunk of my car.

These old engines will operate on pretty much anything, some good old 10w-30 will work just fine

15w40 diesel oil is really good for them also.

@@chrisbroesky2932 I’ve had great success with 15w40 and 20w40 as well

They are very hard to find parts for, especially if you have one of the odd variants like the 23-DFB which has a different coil, flywheel and output shaft.
