Fun fact: Episode 15 is banned or heavily altered in a lot of countries because in just about every part of the world except for the US and Canada, Cider is alcoholic. There are non-alcoholic ciders out there, yes, but given the fact this episode shows cider that bubbles, which is a key feature of actual alcoholic cider, many countries either just didnt show the episode or replaced the word cider with juice

To be fair, during prohibition a lot of stores would sell fruit bricks and juices that came with a 'warning'. It was basically telling them how to turn it into alcohol but that they shouldn't do it. *Hint hint* XD

Imo, S2E15 is peak MLP for two reasons.
1. It hardens back to the lessons from previous episodes; Applejack not being too proud to ask for help (Applebuck Season), and people performing their roles, including Twilight knowing to not get in anyone's way, and work on inventory (Winter Wrap Up).
2. "Dear Princess Celestia.... I didn't learn anything! I was right all along!"

What people don't understand about F&F episode is that it didn't matter if their machine worked or not and wether their cider was good or not. Apples would never serve their cider if it were of a bad quality. F&F, on the other hand, don't care about anyone's safety. I bet they would sell their cider even if it harmed other ponies due to low quality ingredients or even poison. They would just sell their share in one town, then move to the next one. Now imagine if instead of cider the product in question was medicine for critically ill patients. That's the problem with industrialisation - there always will be some weak link in the production chain that lowers quality of the product
The sad part is...
The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000 WORKED. It was producing perfectly fine cider at a rate that could have provided enough of it for the whole town. If Flim&Flam had offered a fare deal to the Apples, both sides would have gotten rich, and Ponyville would have gotten all the cider it wanted.
Unfortunately, Flim&Flam didn't WANT to get legitimately rich. They wanted to get rich by swindling ponies.
Yeah, a lot of idiot balls on all sides. Don't agree to provide them apples and they produce a total of 0 barrels in the contest. They get literally nothing for winning but lose the farm if they lose. Flim and Flam could have easily been all "lol, no" at the request to more than double the workforce with temp unpaid workers which is clearly cheating. And they could have just pulled a barrel from the bottom and by the time anyone notices the quality drop they already have a monopoly on apples.
I still love the episode for music man references, but you can easily twist the moral to "industrialized automation is no match for unpaid sweatshop workers--uh--I mean friendship!"
Fun fact: the pony we see who’s barking actually comes up as a background pony in a later episode and she looks like she’s doing a lot better ❤

The only downfall for the Flim Flam brothers were their greed. They could easily provide good cider for all ponies who did not get any Cider from the Apple Familily but instead they wanted as much as possible.
It's why I felt the message kind of felt flat when I had watched it, because they lost from a reason outside the issue itself - not going the usual route of "Oh but it's not made with love!" as the cider WAS good, but to be fair, I guess it's just a bit more nuanced. industrialization isn't necessarily bad... that's true. It just allows bigwigs to be greedy, and causes the whole monopolization we've been dealing with especially this last decade.
something that the episode doesnt really explore however is the flim flam brothers’ farming abilities however. Even though not stated, their farming wouldve probably caused sweet apple acres to fail anyway

Flim and Flam are pretty smart but they fell for the most common sin: Pride, they would have won without any issue if they wouldn't have let the mane 6 help, they had the option.
"The Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000" is one my favorite Apple family episodes! Flim and Flam instantly became two of my favorite secondary antagonistic characters! Sure they were con artists but damn could they sing a catchy tune and this won't be last we see of them though.
"Read It and Weep" instantly became a fan favorite episode just as Daring Do instantly became another fan favorite character! It was awesome that the mlp universe now had it's own version of Indiana Jones! And Daring Do became so beloved by the fandom that people were hoping that she would one day return.

Thats my problem with the episode. They weren't con artists. They weren't evil. They just were running a business, and the Apple family was just failing to change their business model to meet demand better like limiting purchases or getting extra help. And Flim Flam brothers only lose cause Apple family got extra help, they shoulda got time to build a second machine then. The "lesson" falls flat. Makes me almost wish they won.
@@SleepyStreak Well they may not have pulled a con in their debut episode, But they pulled scams in other episodes they appeared in, Like the miracle tonic, Friendship University and the Hearth's Warmer dolls, etc.
Daring Do has Her own story arc through all next 8 seasons with an satisfying resolution.
Derpy could be the waving snail of MLP, I think the reason that censored was for Derpy's tone when she's speak, I heard that people take that like they were mocking of the people that had that condition, the real reason that Derpy had those eyes was for an animation error on the first episode (she was on Twilight's library during Pinkie's welcome party) and people liked how she looks so they make her as a character
Rainbow claiming from the beginning of the show that “reading is for eggheads.” Yet, when the story of Daring Do catches her attention. We not only see that she loves reading, but the debut of Daring Do herself. Some still debate over refusing to believe Daring Do is a recolored Rainbow, but she’s a character of her own.
I think Rainbow Dash didn’t want anyone knowing that she liked to read.
Fun fact: The meaning of "Flimflam" is swindling someone out of their money.(Basically it's an old timey word for scamming people out of their money 🫰)Also in the older text in Norse Mythology it means "Mockery."
I watched the Daring Do episode as a kid, and i really liked it but I didn't relate to it because I didn't like to read.
But when i was 14 I started reading fanfiction because I was depraved of official content from a show I really liked. I didn't want to watch the series again for the 10th time.
And it was all downhil from there.
I explored other fandoms I like when i started to run out of material which led me to reading proper fiction.
This episode beame very relatable to me because i experienced the same thrill of reading a good story that you become fully invested in it. The need to read more whenever you're forced to put it down.
The all nighters from reading all night just to find out what happens or how the story ends.
I can remember multiple times, even the other night, when I did everything I could to keep reading or staying up late into the night.
I have no shame in reading however.
I might have the episode to thank for that. Teaching me as a kid that it's ok to like reading.
The Super Speedy song is the first one I'd heard when I wanted reason to hate on the show... and I realized ... This Is "Trouble" from The Music Man! And that these guys knew what they were doing! This song HOOKED me on the show.
Rainbow Dash’s obsession for cider is just plain humorous. She goes through all kinds of extremes to get it. Not to mention the debut appearance of Flim & Flam. These brothers are just itching to make it rich quick thinking without consequence.

In America, cider is just pressed apple juice, ideally without anything else added. In Europe, they just ferment it afterwards
It's also super easy to ferment, just add a few teaspoons of wine yeast and add a one-way air seal so it doesn't explode
They're not the same. Apple juice is filtered, pasteurized and sometimes has extra sugar added, so it's thinner and sweeter. Apple cider is unfiltered, unheated, and rarely sweetened, so it's thicker and has a more robust flavor.

On the Derpy issue, I went into detail about the fraud and controversy that lead to her being censored in my comment on the last video, but for why she wasn't censored here: The Censoring Of Derpy Hooves that was done on "The Last Roundup" was really just a knee jerk reaction to the fake letters they received claiming her name and voice were offensive. all these eps were done already, they weren't going to spend the money going thru every ep of the second half of season 2 into early season 3 to change her.
But there was a lasting effect, she has a few more appearances, but then she just stops showing up for quite some time. or if she does, you don't see her face. its not until well into season 4 before she makes a reappearance (presumably because they discovered the deception by then, plus the #savederpy campaign had made a huge impact. keep in mind it takes a long time to make an ep of MLP, they were already working on season 3 eps by this point)

And this episode speaks to me on another level: When I was young I disliked reading. Not to this degree but it was pretty bothersome... And yet I wanted to make comics which required dialogue which required me writing words which meant others would read said words! Oh the struggles... Then one day my parents decided to have a reading session where each member would read a paragraph or more. They brought in Harry Potter, and I pretty much got invested. So much so I ended up reading the rest of the books on my own. And now I enjoy a good book/fan fiction from time to time.

This episode is always odd to me. Flim and Flam didn't exactly do anything wrong. They are just kinda jerks about it. But I think the moral is weird since clearly Flim and Flam's machine is superior to the old way, so the moral always feels like "Doing things the old honest way is better than improving the process." Like... I guess for me it's just the fact production increases quality of life, so it's almost always a good thing.
what they did wrong is intentionally trying to ruin the apples business and trick them, as well as lowering the quality of the cider just to make them faster. the issue has nothing to do with the machine, it’s that film and flam always care only about money and not the people they’re tricking/hurting
