Yes such a stunning horse! He gave a beautiful lively and memorable test. And I fully acknowledge that I’m nowhere close to even thinking of riding in events anymore, so I’m basically “Monday morning quarterbacking “ but I do have some curiosity about this rider’s technique.
I was really surprised at how obvious his riding was- the horse is stunning though, and the test was excellent... obviously we aren’t watching a dressage rider or equitation test...this is eventing, so I shouldn’t expect the subtle elegance which I’ve come to expect from a top level dressage test...BUT, I have to remind myself that this isn’t strictly a dressage horse or rider...these are eventers...True athletes (who maybe lack a bit in refined subtlety, but they certainly have immense talent and they get the job done!).
So yes, I will admit that I’m wrong to criticize technique because I’m using a standard that applies more toward Grand Prix dressage, and not eventing. However, I do want to acknowledge that his riding actually surprised me more than a little bit.....
What bothered me/ what I saw was a lot of obvious action from the rider, who appeared to be riding so far tilted back that it was ugly, like he was falling behind the motion with his upper body...driving super hard with his seat (though the horse stayed relatively supple and elegant. Ok, I know this is a style of riding, it still make me cringe) then there was a camera shot at the medium walk when the rider’s feet were moving so much it looked like he was walking for the horse.
There we many other moments when I was honestly surprised, I had never seen the aids applied with such clarity...it almost felt like he was exaggerating as if to show a student what to do (kind of interesting as a matter of fact). All said, I appreciate the fact that we’re watching a super tall rider on a more petite horse(I have the opposite problem as a 5’1” rider...so yeah, all that leg does make me envious!)
In the end, it was a fantastic performance by a lovely horse. I have such a huge appreciation for these riders, Badminton is a huge challenge for the highest level horse and rider teams- to think that this rider had two horses to ride is mind boggling. Who am I to judge? Really, I’m not making judgements, merely observing some surprising riding. I definitely learned a few things and will mark this as a memorable dressage test for eventing. Wow did that horse PERFORM!

@@elizabetheventing3827 I'm not an expert and I wasn't there so I could be 100% wrong but at .45 seconds of the vid as well as 1:17 of the video and other places.

Kerri Frazier i would say that this is because of the way the horse is built, as it does seem to be working correctly and over itself, just not as much as he might be able to, or you tend to see with other horses. Impossible to tell without riding him and seeing some others on him though 😅

Equestrian Ellie he’s a rather tall man on a smaller horse. This had a lot to do with his leg movement because he was forced to move it up and back to get a clear cue to his horse ☺️ its hard for tall riders to ride small horses!
The horse is going brilliantly...sadly not the same for the rider! Honestly, not the most elegant despite it being eventing dressage, and Townend was constantly nagging the horse with his spurs. Was that really necessary? If you look at these timestamps, you'll understand my shock when he beat the world record... 0:26 , 3:31 , 4:14 , 4:22 for example

#OneRing he only used his spur when necessary to back up his aids, the horse remains relaxed and comfortable so there’s no issue with his spur use
@@annatracey480 Fortunately the continental European riders like Ingrid Klimke or Michael Jung do ride in a different style!
HOLY CRAP 4:14 is ridiculous- he almost fell off! And also after the halt and salute when the horse went sideways. That horse was not relaxed - it was snorting on more than one occasion (which they do as a stress response to something they’ve found difficult)
Roisin Vlogs er horses also snort when they are relaxed and over their back... do you even ride 😂

The Niblet Show ha ha he has the best Dressage mark ever given at Badminton so they’ve got a bloomin hard job ahead! I’m guessing they won’t!
