- Lana Bachynski is a Lead Animator in R&D at Riot Games. Of course, if we showed you any of that work, we’d have to use the flashy thing on you. Luckily, Lana cut her teeth at Riot on the League of Legends PC team, and she knows a thing or two about animating champs. So sit down and strap up as she shows us how to make Akali go grrr.

1- What have you studied to be able to dedicate yourself to 3d animation?
2- do you have to know how to draw?

1. Currently taking a bachelor in "Interactive Media - Animation" at a private university in Norway. Gives me a lot of experience with 3D and introduces me to the industry in a way that will make it possible for me to apply for jobs right after the studies, given that I have skills that I can show off by the end of it.
2. No. Drawing may give you an edge in some situations, but for 3D animation it is not at all necessary. Personally I am absolutely hopeless but have managed to score top grades in our animation courses.

I love her laid back attitude towards animation in general. Like she has the technique and the theory down, so now she just focuses on the art itself, if that makes sense
Even if this doesn't get millions of view. This IS inspiring more people to become animators! Keep them coming! I might just get back into it and use me 3D animation degree! And heck... Next thing you know I'm applying to Riot Games!
omg finally someone who doesn't work strictly with stepped and keyposes 😭 I work exactly like this too and I've always been thinking that some day I need to learn the "real" way. As someone who just graduated with a diploma in 3D animation and VFX, this sort of stuff is _priceless_ for me. Especially considering I want to do a lot of fight choreographies in my own personal pieces to put on CZcams and such.
It's nice to see that animating as a passion and as a job are relatively similar. Seeing Lana have those struggles with keyframing and having to be very intricate with how she does those animations is very relatable. One missing keyframe or an oddly flexed limb and your character will go bending all sorts of ways.
I love Lana! im glad riot swooped her up! not only is she very skilled, but shes one of my favorite Animator Content Creators :)! Keep it up Lana, you're doing great!

Thank you for this video there are some great tips and I love seeing other animator's workflows. I feel validated by how much she has the graph editor open, I do that too
I really needed this right now. I'm in my animation portfolio class, and I fell in love with animation (which surprised me!). I want to eventually end up at Riot, and this is such good reinforcement and motivation. This lady is a fantastic teacher!

i don't know if it's a team of editors or one person but i really like the editing. the things like in the 3th episode of Caitlin flying around or in this one showing graphic design with a picture of her face, it keeps it playful and i really like it.

The fact that a company like Riot is offering content like this is amazing, as a 3D animator myself, videos like this really put out a standard and goal that I can work towards. Thank you Riot.
I also don't like blocking key poses, and I always hear that it is not the best way to work, but I also feel that doing it in a more spline, more fluid way, gives more freedom, as you said. I felt embraced with this video of yours =)

52:19 There's actually a button fix for gimbol lock. You don't need to force every frame to move the way you want. In the graph editor window, at the top "Curves" -> "Euler Filter". That button fixes it right up!
Just keep in mind, if you have purposefully large rotations between keys (like a 360% spin) Euler Filter might also remove that. Adding an extra key or two in between should stop it from happening though. Hope that helps!

I am a student who is learning 3d. Learning at the academy was part of the textbook, but it is very helpful to be able to see LOL animation in such detail that many students envy. Through this video, you can learn where to touch the motion graph more smoothly.

Someone told me to ditch blender for the “industry standard,” but it’s tough to make a change! 🙃 I have yet to even see if it’s even free!
I trip out on little mistakes I find in World of Warcraft. It’s HUGE yet the cat mount has a vertex with messed up weight painting or whatever it is-! It’s really inspiring. I know how hard it is to set something up again and again in a game engine while discovering mistakes you made in the model and rig- I can’t imagine working with a TEAM!!!😮

I usually pre-key the keys evenly, like frames 0, 5, 10, 15, etc., and then just move them according to the speed of the reference. I don’t know how correct this is, but it’s more convenient than immediately trying to make rhythmic animation.
Soyeon sang supercarry for Riot recently and Ahri got a visual update and this video got uploaded hmmm Worlds is at Korea this year not suspicious at all! We for sure won't get K/DA comeback this year, right?
I feel like we'll get Arcane season 2 this year ... I hope for more K/DA too but I can't imagine Riot having 2 huge events for one Worlds ... though they also didn't tease any summer event so far hmm

If i saw this video several years before, my understanding about the career in game industry would be much more clear.
Hearing you talk about fighting the computer in order to get it to do what you want and how you interact with the rigs and posing and what not makes me think of Cascedeur, and how that AI assisted animation software and/or the big comíamos implementing those principles like it are going to completely change the animation landscape in this sense because they are solving all these things and having a completely different approach to 3-D animation
