Born in 1960 I can't believe it's been 63 yrs, thank you for the movie
Finch was a master of his craft. What a studied and measured performance!
❤Peter Finch in A TOWN LIKE ALICE..This one seems good too!!!
This is a great film. Overlooked and under-rated, but everything about it is flawless: the screenplay, direction, acting, music, editing, photography, everything. A forgotten classic which stands the test of time. Brilliant.
Peter Finch with his great skill makes this film unforgettable. a pleasure to see and hear him.
This is such a good movie. Peter Finch excellent as usual. He has such a believable presence.
Peter Finch-so natural and believable-one of the absolute greats! Subtle and complex movie as well. Malcolm Arnold always adds another level of beauty to a film.
Donald Pleasance with his crooked bow tie, Peter Finch a class act, suave and elegant ladies man. GREAT OLD FILM.
How is it that this movie is never shown these days? Terrific acting, intriguing story, beautiful music and scenery. Thanks for posting!
A flawless gem. Finch is supreme, backed by a star-studded supporting cast. A 5/5 in my book without a moment's hesitation.
My sentiments exactly.
Couldn't agree more love British films of this era
I agree. I was just introduced to the film. I was literally on the edge of my seat emotionally. I was rooting for this man on all levels.
@@jeanetteterry9386
Hi, Jeanette. I'm going to watch it again, today. Cheers.
@@ivanppillay914 Enjoy 😉!
I surrendered to the story and at each turn wondered if he would be altered incrementally in some way, but in the end, he just reverted to his true nature. Well done all the way around!
Wonderful movie from start (script) to finish (all the stars shining). We need more movies from 1961.
And more film composers like Malcolm Arnold. But he was a genius and in a class by himself I think.
A rich and timely take on the humanity of political life then and now, thank you Mr. Retrospective!
There was an undeniable aura surrounding actors of this era. They exuded a certain charisma and class
Very realistic and believable particularly with the real life Profumo scandal about to break.
An old, seldom seen classic. Many thanks for sharing.
Still well remembered....wonderful Peter Finch.
Brilliant, this film was so emotional moving and deep on so many levels. This man was so transparent, vulnerable and forth-coming. He yearned for acceptance, love, forgiveness, purpose. This movie was such a treat, treasure, and emotional high. Thank you for sharing the film.
Very sad! Unfortunately, true to life. No love for Johnnie because no love from Johnnie.
@Howard King, very astute and I agree!
Superb movie. Sir Peter Finch is a Fantastic Actor. I had the pleasure in serving him once in the old Army and Navy store in Victoria London in the jewellery department. I was a Saturday sales girl then. What a gentleman and handsome. 🙏 🌹 God bless him.
Good movie. Could be alternately titled “Three Women Dodge a Bullet” 😂
!!!!
Haha 😆 good one!
Most enjoyable Great acting from all. Always loved Peter Finch RIP
Great movie, loved it. Thanks for uploading. Finch's performance: flawless. Second time I see it, first time was years ago. I appreciated it much more this time around, found it more hopeful. The moment he tore his wife's number, he took charge of his life, which he hadn't done before. Character does have its redeeming qualities.
That's interesting. I felt that he threw away a tough struggle towards intimacy and honesty, and re-joined the political dance. Funny how perceptions differ.
@@gailjarvis2592 I felt the same way, only then to read your comment to realise I had been reading your mind! The PM's PPS summed him up the first time, and delivered the final verdict as its reiteration when Byrne left the PM with his new and breathtakingly modest achievement. A brilliant portrayal of someone whose sole principle is fecklessness.
I saw the whole thing as an illustration of how absurd man is when he thinks he can control outcomes in a world that is much bigger then he will ever be.
Not many films with Peter Finch on CZcams. Thanks. He is my favourite Artist .
Great film absorbing and Finch .. a superb actor
"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take this anymore!" Priceless.
He’s a wee bit younger in this flick!🇬🇧
No high windows in this one, fortunately!😅
An interesting insight into how Parliament is run and politicians behave. Peter Finch's character - Johnnie Byrne - doesn't inspire empathy, despite his good looks. The 20-year old Pauline shows more intelligence
and wisdom by dropping him. A good study into how people use people. Thank you for posting.
This can happen in any walk of life.
Peter Finch, ohhhhh, love him!
As a fan and fellow Aussie, I could watch anything with Peter Finch in it. But this is a great film on its own terms - touching on the issues with romantic relationships when a big age gap exists, and the grubby factionalism of politics. Some things never change. Like so many films of this period set in the UK, it's realistic and utterly believable.
Don't forget the great Reg Lye !
Another Aussie who appeared on British TV and films from 60 s onwards . Never the leading man but always good to see him.
Or Paul Hogan ...😘
Peter Finch was born in England and died in the USA.
@@EjwiiiLowvilleNY Bob Hope was born in Britain, doesn't make him British. Finch was a proud Australian.
@@dorkarama3135 Bob was born in Britain and had British parents. How does that not make him British? He even received a British knighthood
I didn't expect this movie to make me laugh, cry and jump up and down❤P F to bits😊
Quite a story - and surprising ending
Wonderful acting by one and all.
What a great film! Peter Finch was a superb actor; and I really believe his Oscar-winning performance in Network (1976) contributed to the heart-attack that killed him after the film was released. His wife accepted the award on his behalf.
Very intense well made film. Thanks for sharing, have never seen it before.
Finch won the BAFTA award for ..Johnnie, Town Like Alice, Trials of Oscar Wilde, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and Network.
Beautiful man Peter Finch.
Similar mould to Albert Finney IMO
@@mikedowns8293 Thought same.
I have a lot to be grateful to this Australian Peter Finch he was responsible
for introducing me to the right people in order the enter the British Film Industry
sweat the small stuff much?
ur tongue is evil.....
@Mac intoSser Ha! Ha!
Ronald Collins Productions: An Assistant Director once asked me ( in a pub, of course, in Chelsea ) if I was Peter Finch's son as Mr. Finch knew my mother well and therefore I should be grateful to Mr. Finch also . But she assured me my father ( no, not Peter ) was there.
:(
He was English altho raised in Australia!
Wow.......... !!!!! Restrained yet dramatic...... real I nuances of the emotional chiarasuro
A great british classic. Peter Finch is super and good to look at too. Time well spent watching this.
The gorgeous Peter Finch. He starred with the sadly missed Glenda Jackson in another fabulous British film, Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Glad it wasn't much to do with politics. I enjoyed drama between the male and the different women that surround him. Good story and pace. The acting by all was above standard. Thanks for sharing this one.🧡☮
Just started watching; isn't that Billie Whitelaw? Peter Finch, in my opinion was even greater as Oscar Wilde than Robert Morley. There is something so comforting about his great yet vulnerable manliness. I love him.
Yes i allways thought she was dead sexy
Thank you for uploading this! We really enjoyed it~great acting and a superb ending!
Thanks for the upload, very enjoyable, has stood the test of time very well
Extremely well made. How the corridors of power can influence a member and let them put personal issues aside, Thanks for the upload, Any film with Finch, Pleasance, Keen and Holloway is going to be exceptional.
Absolutely!!! Including Mervyn Johns, Billie Whitelaw. Dennis Price.
Was Pleasance there? Gosh I wish he'd had a larger showing.
An absolute gem many heartfelt thanks 👏👏👏👏
Thank you. Another Gem of a movie. I have been a looong time fan of any and all of Peter Finch movies-performances. It is so good to find one of his movies here. Thank you!
simple and great story and acting.
The power of this film classic lies in its simple, uncomplicated, plot which never deviates from the main thread.
This is a forgotten British classic. Had ‘X’ certificate when released.
Peter Finch was one of the most amazing Actor who ever lived.....watching on The Trials of Oscar Wilde ( he deserved an Oscar for this Play) make you became an Actor yourself
He was excellent as Oscar Wilde and played this character in exactly the same way I thought he would
One of the best actors, I agree.
fine movie, always love Peter Finch.. Some beautiful birds in this one....9/10 thank you.
Agree. Good film. Nice women.
Enjoyable nostalgic film
Politics (power over others) bring out the worst in people. Power corrupts. 'Man dominates man to injure them.' - Ecclesiastes 8:9.
Hesitate to be picky, but why are two sitting room windows wide open in the middle of a rainstorm at 1hr:26min. And why does the spendidly smooth Peter Finch at times have an obviously fake handkerchief in his breast pocket?
To injure whom? Should be Man dominates man to injure HIM. And Politics IS like the news. Looks plural but IS in fact, singular. So, politics brings out the worst... The news IS bad...
The Acronym of power over others is Poo.
@@rogerjenkinson7979 Add 'people' and you got POOP.
Thank you, always great to see Peter Fynch.
he made the right decision in the end. tearing away the contact no of his wife.
I think that was perfect. Thanks Retrospective!
Check out the actors listed......almost a who's who of British talent in '61.
It would be nice to hear that some people involved in politics have still some time to share for love or friendship.
I am afraid they have not, not at all, but some program decided for their needs.
"We don't have anybody else" (Alice's argument) is an unhealthy reason to continue an unhappy relationship.
But that's why most do continue. We get snagged. This character didn't want that. He only cared for himself. He probably would go very far in his "business". So, you have to try. That's what his wife was asking. She was making the stretch and he wasn't taking. He said "Nobody wants me.", but he only "wanted" people as satellites revolving around him. -- Fine acting all around. Finch was tip-top in a tough role, and the actress who played Pauline was absolutely lovely and simple in a complex characterization.
Astonishing, ranks with Gore Vidal's take on American politics, "The Best Man".
Great to see a master at work. The bombastic music could be adjusted.
That was always a problem: they used to lay it on as if they hadn't enough confidence in the action or the acting. Always the same sort of music-track, whether in (at random) "...River Kwai", "The Sea Shall Not Have Them" or this picture : those Malcolm Arnold crescendos...God knows what they would have done without them.
@@johnhardman3 : This is my biggest criticism: excessively loud and intrusive music and, at times, barely audible dialogue.
Great film! What a nuanced, layered performance of this very flawed man! Strong women characters, too, for this time period!
oliver reed is also in this great movie. all great actors.
Indeed; cameo, uncredited, at the party (quelle surprise !)
And Dennis Price.
Thx. for loading. Unexpected, excellent story.
What a truly original idea. An absolute gem.
Mervyn Johns. A superb - and underrated actor!
Politicians are awful people. Nothing has changed. Great film.
Don't generalize but accept responsibility for voting them in.
@@justtubingby129 You can only for people on the ballot paper.
AMEN
A rare glimpse behind the scenes with good acting.
This is quite a movie. I love that it doesn't have a sappy ending. I recognized Billie Whitelaw, who played his neigbor lady, from her role as the evil Mrs. Baylock in "The Omen," and Rosalie Crutchley, his estranged wife, from her role as Catherine Parr in the 1970 TV series, The Six Wives of Henry VIII.
But most amazing is the uncredited cameo of Oliver Reed at about 28:20 and 29:00, as a wild guy at a party. You can see him here before he got the scar on his face.
Really entertaining - thanks for posting!
Yes she sees her prey at 35:16.
XLNT acting!!! Love Johnnie.....
Love you Finchy. Thank you for your Films
A film that's very entertaining, and with a great cast. Thank you.
Incredible film. Fascinating.
You mean there are actually people who work to save their marriages?? How novel. Rare too.
He may have had a similar situation in his real life with his real wife and career.
Great film.
Great channel - thank you for your work.
This was a fantastic film! Thanks
I second the remarks below. Sophisticated movie about an opportunistic politician who cuts an impressive figure but only cares about his own advancement. Hats off to my former professor at Carleton University, the late Mordecai Richler who co-wrote the screenplay.
“You’ll treat me like a daughter, except when we’re in bed.” That, sadly, sums up the age difference between two people in love.
This was a very good film. Peter Finch, as always, was outstanding in his role as a weak, self-serving politician with little integrity, as were Mary Peach and the other supporting actors (Billie Whitelaw most of all).
Well done! Thanks!
Well done Retrospective, I really enjoyed watching the movie. These old black and white movies can really
be worth watching. Thanks.
Good to see the beautiful Billie Whitelaw again. I had a crush on her in the mid-1960s and even managed to talk to her as she was learning her lines in a park. As a good Bradford lass, she didn't dismiss me, but politely chatted until I nervously burbled my farewell. Oh..... and it is an excellent film.
Never saw this movie on TV but I have been watching it for well nearly 20 years.
years. Someone explain.
This film is an eye opener to the trick played in Westminster and the back stabbing
A nicely told story about the often twisting trials of Real personal Life, here "mixed" amongst the murky waters of ANY political "swamp".....!!! 👌
Really well-selected leading and supporting cast...... where Donald Pleasence's short cameos lent a needed element to The Muck. 😎
*THX* Retropsective.
"He's going to plant some flowers and he won't be alive when they bloom"
For the Peter Finch fans (and he is excellent) The Pumpkin Eater is a fabulous, complex film with Peter Finch and Anne Bancroft, 1964.
You have to be very alert to appreciate a Pinter screen play let alone his written work.
For someone who's been re-elected you'd think he'd know by now how the political system works. So the govt want to do a regime change against a country with a democratically-elected leader: no change there then.
That's what Russia is doing in Ukraine.
Bravo 👏
This has all the elements of a great film... A character named Johnny.
Great cast in a well made film.
Was that guy counting out at 29 a young Oliver Reed ??Peter Finch conveys a confused ambiguity whether out of character or the situation ; anyway a refreshing change from the headstrong and single tracked characters that you normally encounter in 'adventure' ventures. Quite an interesting story .
HI
Yes! Well picked! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.
A charming film.
Better than average British movie from the early sixties before they became silly. Well cast with Finch as the ambitious MP, Billie Whitelaw as the good girl and Mary Peach as what was then called the dolly bird. Excellent supporting roles from Pleasance, Holloway and the rest. Alas, they had to work 'Johnnie' into the title - a fad of that era... Johnnie Nobody, Johnnie Guitar, etc... but then I suppose it helped put bums on seats. Good script, tight editing and a nice twist to the ending. Well worth watching.
willie otoole: Was that Fanella Fielding in it? - hostessing the party - first party.
Top, appraisal WoT.
"Johhhnee Remember meee.."
Superb!!
The City in the beginning, here called Earnley, sure looks like Sheffield !!
Not far off. Halifax.
Happiness is silent, or speaks equivocally for friends,
Grief is explicit and her song never ends,
Happiness is like England, and will not state a case,
Grief, like Guilt, rushes in and talks apace.
Stevie Smith
Can I add the names Wilfred Fienburgh and Mordecai Richler to the writing credits?
Thanks
Good movie.
Another British film good cast
Great acting no doubt. It's interesting to know that some of the people in the UK were forced to wait for a phone line for up to 8 years. Not unlike what was experienced behind the Iron Curtain.
With Conrad Phillips who played William Tell on television,
😎Excellent film
