    For everyone complaining about the quality:
    They don't need good quality to film underwater AND It's not easy filming with good quality down so deep.
    They found what they where searching for and they're happy!
    Try to find such a majestic creature yourself.

    I can see there are total lack of appreciation people complain about the camera they use that it's not HD, camcorder, only takes pics every 30 sec etc. if it really annoyed you people that much then go watch Monster Quest at least these scientists found what they were looking for and good result in the end also you need to think of their budget and how much time they had available.

    Amazing how that tentacle still moved! One can only imagine what a nightmare it would be for a diver that encountered one of these monsters. Stronger than an elephant, faster than a tiger, hundreds of suckers with pirahna-like teeth, and a beak that can bite through bone. More dangerous than a great white shark. We're just fortunate that these giants spend most of their lives in the deep.

    Wait but... a tentacle got caught on the hook, and after struggeling, it curled into a ball around the hooked tentacle and after a while only the tentacle is left.
    Did the squid upon finding no way to get off the hook, bite off it's own tentacle to free himself? (animals in bear traps have been known to chew off limbs, so...).
    That's a kinda grueling way of discovery. Though I'll give them the benefit of a doubt and assume they didn't intend to hook it. Hopefully.

      @sueb262 Před 10 lety +1

      You realize that they couldn't see the pictures live, right? I mean, they didn't know that "they had a chance." And I'd be surprised that a creature this big and strong could even have been "reeled in" on the cable holding the camera. Yes, it held the creature in place for a couple of hours, but I think the trip to the surface would have put enormous pressures on both the cable and the creature. The squid was able to free itself, after all.

    • @flamedrag18
      @flamedrag18 Před 10 lety

      sueb262 a collosal squid, the one even heavier than the giant squid was caught on a antarctic longline and pulled up from the depths with no lasting damage, it's just the fishermen kept it instead for their own purposes.

    • @sueb262
      @sueb262 Před 10 lety

      ***** Oh, how did the line they were using differ from the line used here? I mean, I wonder what the team taking the pictures were expecting their line to have to tolerate as compared to the expectations of the fishermen, and how they translated those expectations into choice of line strength, etc.

    • @flamedrag18
      @flamedrag18 Před 10 lety

      actually, they knew something was on the line.....the float just rocketed down and it never came back up. if they did another deep drop and this time try to reel it in, they possibly could have reeled it in.

    • @sueb262
      @sueb262 Před 10 lety

      ***** They didn't mention a second drop. I wonder if they did that. And, if so, did they prepare a stronger line or something? And if they did that, then I wonder why they did NOT "reel it in"?

    Such tranquil music while the squid gets it's arm or tentacle snagged off by the line! I'm feeling like it's time for a little more discovery channel

    It goes to show you how tenacious they are. They will rip and rend their own limbs off to survive. In the abysmal depths they live this is a crucial instinct, they have 9 more tentacles to hunt with and will live. Every opportunity is vital to take, so opportunistic and tenacity are a few of the elements of why the giant squid is such an evolutionary work of art. They have more recent footage of giant squid, human eye witness account. Deep Sea Submersive. Check it out!

    this is a break through in the study of this animal. for a long time scientists believed that giant squids didnt actively hunt their prey but instead stayed still and used their tentacles like fishing lines to snag fish and other food that swam by.
