Life Cycle of Garden Snails (mating, eggs & babies) | BAO After Work

  • Today, I would like to share with you the life cycle I observed on garden snails: mating, laying eggs and babies hatching. I started to keep snails as pet just out of curiosity. The longer I keep them, the I more I find them fascinating. Their life rituals are so alien to me, so different from any pets I've ever known. I can’t stop reading about them and start to purchase other snail varieties online. There isn’t much text on pet snails since I guess only a few people consider them as pet. So my journey is full of trial and error.

    If you are planning on keeping a snail, read this list, i am really good with snails and have 5 of my own.
    1: Getting ready
    First, you need a habitat! Get a plastic container, make sure it isnt too small, or too big. (I use a plastic food container) Clean it well with NO chemicals, just with warm water. The habitats need clean soil, bacteria and bugs live in soil and harm the snails. I recommend getting garden soil and cleaning it. Get a container of garden soil and put boiling water in it. Shake it and wait till its dry again, the heat will kill bacteria and bugs. After that, make holes in the plastic container. Make sure the holes arent too big nor too small, and make sure the holes arent sharp and cant hurt your snail. Then, put your clean soil in the container and add decorations. Snails need a place to hide when they are scared. Snails are like humans, they want privacy. Get a small plant pot and flip it so it would be like a cave, then push soil into it. Add leaves and rocks, along with some sticks. Snails like to explore. Add some food and get a small bottle cap full of water in there so the snail can drink. Finally, add a cuttle bone in there, its used to provide calcium
    2: Food and calcium
    Cuttle bones are just the right things to help snails get calcium. Snails will munch on them. Snails need calcium to grow their shells. For food, you can put in things like: carrots, cucumbers, apples, lettuce, leaves ect. DO NOT let the snails eat salty or starchy foods such as potatoes as they are really bad for the snails.
    3: I have a snail, now what?
    Make sure you have a spray bottle of water, you MUST spray the habitat with water AT LEAST twice a day. When its cold, put warmer water, and when its hot, put cooler water. Snails need water. Clean everything in the habitat and change the soil at least every 3 - 4 days as snails poop alot and it makes the soil dirty. If its your first time keeping snails, only keep ONE as snails will reproduce and make little eggs. Only keep two snails if you are ready to have hundreds of baby snails. Make sure it isnt too hot or too cold in the room either. Dont add paper items because snails will eat them and its bad for them. Dont add anything sharp in the habitat because it will hurt the snail. Snails DONT need baths, the only thing close to a bath you can give them is water, spray warm water on them twice a day. Make sure habitat is
    sealed properly, snails are quite strong and can sometimes lift up lids from habitats. If you have any questions, type them in the reply section.

      should I let that happen to my snails?

    • @sedmdesatosmmesicu
      @sedmdesatosmmesicu Před 4 lety +56

      No, don't add rocks to your habitat. Small rocks in the soil are okay, but big rocks can hurt the snails. If the snail climbs somewhere high, He can fall on the rock and hurt his shell. Also, potatoes should be Fine for snails, try giving them a sweet potato.

      @Aaron K Yeah, There is probably a way higher chance the snail Will hurt himself if the rock is Sharp, but even if the rock is not Sharp the chance is still There. You can probably add rocks, but I personally don't think snails need them, And I think There are way better things for snails than rocks. Of course every snail likes something diferent, Just sharing my opinion :D

    • @sedmdesatosmmesicu
      @sedmdesatosmmesicu Před 4 lety +16

      @@itsleviosanotleviosa You can try visiting a pet shop, they usually sell coconut bedding (not sure if its called like this) for reptiles, And I think its very nice for snails. You Will need to change it in some months or weeks though. But I really recommend it, it holds water very well and you can plant some plants in it. If you want something cheaper, a lot of People like to use Moss. Visit a forest, get some and make sure to clean it very well, I am sure you can find videos on how to clean it so There arent any bacterias or something that could hurt your snail. So you can use these two, but I think soil used for indoor plants should be okay. If you plan on buying a snail, You Will probably Visit the pet shop anyways, so you can ask People There, I am sure they Will help you :)

I became interested in snails a couple of days ago, I was going to move my garbage can from the curve when I saw a snail in the middle of the road, I went to pick it up so it wouldn't get ran over, and as soon as I picked it up, it contracted and went inside its shell. I placed it on my lawn, and saw that the garbage man had killed another snail when I picked up my garbage can as it was underneath it. I know they cling to the cans and fence. So, I became intrigued. I never kill them, I know they love my garden as I always find them there. They are soooo cute.

    What a beautiful video! My 3 & 4 year old daughters have been finding snails all over our property and love them. We enjoyed watching this. And for the people saying the baby snails are cannibalistic.. i believe she meant they eat the siblings egg sack if they haven’t hatched yet. Not that they eat the actual baby snail inside. That was my interpretation of it.

    Very nicely done video! Today my heart shattered when I accidentally crushed not 1 not 2 but 3 snails in total just because I was using my hp while walking. It's all my fault & I couldn't forgive myself. I cleaned up d mess, did a prayer but surprisingly fell in love with having snails as pet. Thank U for sharing so much information about them!

    I was mostly interested in the narrator's pronunciation on months. I've never heard month + s, before but it checks out logically.
