Fair to say, Caroline is not a huge Lennon fan. But that's what makes these takes so interesting to watch. Dear Prudence and Julia are magical songs to me
It only confirms that McCartney was a better musician... as any classically trained musician would tell you.
Still Lennon was a very good guitarist...
@@BStrapperI would like to understand why, as I don’t. I love them both, but feel that the Lennon ballads just have that extra notch of melancholy that i really love compared to McCartneys. I don’t see a difference in artistery neither technical nor otherwise.
@@TemmyTubei'm no expert but i think it's because lennon was very experimental with his songs compared to mccartney's. Mccartney was also fairly knowledgable with the classical genre as he did study the genre for a while, maybe that would be the reason for his songs being more in line with the principles of trained musicians when it came to music. Something interesting about mccartney was that he did attend several classical orchestras around london and he for a while got interested with learning more about the genre around 1965-1966, before sgt peppers.

@@klums7651 did you know it was Paul McCartney that did all the whistles and bells on tomorrow never knows, he was by far the more experimental one.
"While my Guitar Gently Weeps" is in my top Beatles tunes list. "Dear Prudence" is woefully underrated. "I'm So Tired" is also one of my faves. I like all of Lennon's sleepy songs, especially "I'm only Sleeping", which is in my top Beatles tunes list. "Happiness is a warm gun" is a killer tune.
40 years ago, as a teen, I could care less about " I'm So Tired", a song that dragged, about how tired Lennon was. Now, I think it's magic.
Dear Prudence just grows better with the years
Agree on While My Guitar Gently Weeps. My second favorite is probably Cry Baby Cry, then Revolution, Sexy Sadie, and Happiness is a Warm Gun rounding out my top 5.
Looks like we have exactly the same taste regarding John, my friend. yes to all of that; I really like his songs about sleep and dreaming. And "Happiness" is has got to be, hands down, their most interesting song in terms of structure. It has like twelve distinct sections! (I don't know if it's really twelve. I did try to count them once and it's a lot. Hmm...
Let's try it now:
1. "She's not a girl...oh yeah." Intro
2. "She's well acquainted...national trust." (verse 1--excellent exclamation mark with the guitar chord)
3. Guitar solo waltz
4. "I need a fix...down." (verse 2, I guess? But it sounds like a middle eight.)
5. "Mother Superior...jump the gun" (Umm, but this also sounds like a middle eight!)
6. "Happiness (Bang! Bang! Shoot! Shoot!)...Mama!" (chorus)
7. "When I hold you..because!" (verse 3?)
8. "Happiness..is.warm, yes it is..." (chorus 2?)
9. "Guuuuuuuu oh wahhhh..." (bridge from chorus to chorus)
10. "Well don't you know that happiness is a warm gun, Mama." (chorus)
Does that look right?
Anyway, it's an incredibly innovative song just structurally. To say nothing of John's vocal, which is one of his very best (such character, range, expressiveness, and power).
So yes. A killer tune indeed. :)
(Oh, and to John's sleepy songs I'd add "There's a Place." Not sleep strictly thinking, of course, but dreamy. John's inner life. Also, of course, "A Day in the Life" and "Strawberry Fields." And in the end, this is why John has been my guy since I was a kid. I love them all but in the end, it's this inner life dreaminess of John's that just resonated to the depths of my soul. And still do.)
😄This was really FUN! I personally rank "Helter Skelter" and "Yer Blues" much higher than you did, probably because I enjoy when performers step away from their typical style and do something that is completely unexpected. Those 2 songs in particular fit that bill for me! This reaction was "S-Tier"! Thanks a million! 🏆🏆🏆

After all, Paul’s gift for melody didn’t end with the Beatles, and George was just getting started as a songwriter when the Beatles broke up.
There are too many of them to react to, but I think you’d especially love McCartney, Ram, Band on the Run, and All Things Must Pass.
Plastic Ono Band and Imagine are wonderful too, but I think you favor Paul and George over John, and that would probably carry through to the solos.
It is, of course, your channel and nobody else’s! But more Beatle reactions would make a lot of people really happy. They were such a bright spot for many of us during the pandemic.

@@B.R.0101 based on the songs she liked, I think that album would be a must-listen. It’s of the first indie rock albums, with Paul playing every instrument himself. “Junk” alone makes it worth a spin.
Yes, with or without Pandemia, i am for it. "All Things Must Pass" is a good start.
At least a reaction to one of the many Black Album iterations will be good enough.

I think one thing that’s always overlooked is how young they were and how great there music and lyrics were, it’s amazing George was 24 writing songs like within you without you!

I was surprised you gave Sexy Sadie a C simply because the frequencies aren't spread out enough in the mix. (Personally Sexy Sadie is one of my most favorite songs on the White Album especially the 2018 version)
I'm a part of the Dear Prudence Clan. While all that you say about the song is true, there is something that is both mysterious and ethereal...in my ear, when I listen to it. Of course, I've had more years to allow it to marinate within. Love it when you offer up these little bejeweled moments of musical thoughts . Thank you!!
Dear Prudence, one of my fave Lennon songs since the day it first stunned me, back in the day, along with Paul's "Back in the U.S.S.R." and George's "While My Guitar..." (some of their best), makes side 1 of the White Album absolutely killer.
I'm with you there on Dear Prudence! A similar song from another band's oeuvre is How Soon Is Now? by the Smiths, by how it just stands out as so totally unique and splendid.
Paul sure knew how to write a bass line for John's songs.
It took me years and years to appreciate Dear Prudence for the masterpiece it is. The development of the song from the opening simplicity to the multi-layered music at the end is amazing. Apparently Ringo, who had temporarily broken from the group, takes up the drums later in the song, and you can hear the difference in the drumming.
Polemic opinion, I prefer Dear Prudence over My Guitar gently weeps. Both masterpieces
You clearly lean towards the Paul song (as do I) but the only ones of his that you don’t like , Hester Skelter and Why Don’t we do it in the road are screamers! And I feel they deserve to be recognized, if only because of what he is able to do with his voice!
While my guitar gently weeps is just one of the best songs of all time. Nice to see Caroline getting back to the Beatles!
I agree that it's one of the greatest rock/pop songs of all time, Harrison's best, and among the Beatles' best. Anyone who hasn't already done so simply MUST watch Prince's epic cover of it, as it's one of the greatest covers, live performances and guitar solos of all time. Alas, neither is still with us.

Imagine it is early December 1968, you are 16 years old, and just bought this album with your own hard-earned money. The first play-through is a deeply religious experience that you remember and treasure for the rest of your life.
And i am happy that i was of those lucky 17 year olds!
Such precious memories. I remember listening to Rubber Soul for the first time and being blown away. I must have been 10 yrs old. The guitars, the harmonies, the songs just took me away and reinforced my love for the greatest band ever.

Happiness is a warm gun is 'S Tier' to me. Was notably the first song ever to have multiple diffrent sounding sections in the realm of what Queen did with bohemian rhapsody.
It’s a great song, but The Who released “A Quick One While He’s Away” a year before, am I’m not even sure even that it is the first song of that type.

I personally believe anyone’s favorites tend to mirror their internal or external mood. You shy away from the darker songs, you prefer the instant sing along catchy melodies… it reflects your personality. Joy over darkness☺️
Lovely to see that you kept your promise! And FYI Rocky Racoon is my favourite song of the album so you're not the only one that appreciates this beautiful song... Also I still believe that it would be great for us (and you) if you reacted to some of their solo albums, I'm pretty sure that you will love them!

I think it would be awesome to get the grades for more albums! Very early on, though, the Beatles did a lot of cover songs, and many of the originals were similar teen songs, boy gets girl, etc. But maybe starting with Help! or Rubber Soul would be really interesting!
Enjoyed your rankings and the entire Beatles series. I'd give Back in the USSR an "A". It's banger rock song in the spirit of Chuck Berry and the Beach Boys. The lyrics evoke the paranoia of the old Soviet Union, which gives it a depth above simply being a toe tapper.
Totally agree, Back in the USSR is a killer tune, as is Dear Prudence and some others Caroline graded low but horses for courses. It could happen that someday Caroline will feel differently about some of these tunes. It happened to me for sure
The lyric is under-appreciated. If you understand it, it's absolutely hilarious.
A bit like Paul Simon's "Mother And Child Reunion". I only recently realised that it was about an offering in a restaurant which Simon visited. The "Mother And Child Reunion" was ........ a chicken omelette!.
"I would not give you false hope on this strange and mournful day/ but the mother and child reunion is only a moment away" is darkly funny once you realise that the "Mother" is the chicken in the omelette and the "Egg Omelette" is the chicken's child. "The course of a lifetime" is sitting on a dinner plate at Paul Simon's restaurant table.
I'm sure that most people don't even get the jokes in that song because of the power of the great music.
It's a similar thing with "Back In The USSR". There are lots of great jokes within the words. "That Georgia's always on my mind" is a hat tip to Ray Charles. The song's title is a parody of Chick Berry's "Back In The USA" and there are harmony vocals in the style of the Beach Boys to accentuate the ridiculousness of the song's premise of going to the old Soviet Union to have a good time.
Personally, I think it's one of McCartney's sharpest lyrics. It's very, very witty.
I have always considered Beatles albums (and most other albums) as entities, not as collections of songs. Once I start listening to an album, I play it to the end. The idea of skipping tracks doesn't enter my mind. Certain songs grow on you over time and through repeated listenings. If you skip tracks after listening to them only once or twice, that's not going to happen. There are quite a few tracks on the White Album that didn't appeal to me when I first heard it, but I persevered and grew to enjoy the whole thing.

Based on the list, you'd probably also be into some of McCartney's early solo stuff. Songs like Junk or Every Night off the McCartney album are perfect examples of Maccas gift of melody making.
Also if you have never listened to Calico Skies, do yourself that favour. It is on par with songs like Blackbird and Yesterday, and IMO a contender for the best song McCartney as written.

It was rubbish in it's original form. Thankfully Richie Havens turned it into something worth listening to.
Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, name, and aspects of his character are a nod to the Beatles song, Rocky Racceen.
I love John's upbeat numbers on this album, but Paul really shines, like you say there is literally no one who does a melody like him. I think overall, across their entire catalogue it's honours even between the two of them with occasional flashes of brilliance from George. But Paul "wins" this album for me as well.
"...music has an element of magic to it that can't be defined". True. And it applies to the entire Beatles catalogue. Lots of bands made music, some of it very good. But the Beatles made magic, day in and day out. To this day no one has figured it out.

'Dear Prudence' is my favorite song. If you can find the video that deconstructs the song give it a listen. Notice how there's a different bass line for each verse, how the different instrumentation weaves in and out, how the song floats in at the beginning and drifts off at the end, how it builds and subsides then climaxes with the piano and electric guitar parts.
And the overall vibe, the lyrics are so positive: The Sun is up, The sky is blue, It's beautiful, And so are you Dear Prudence.
Lennon also used the finger-picking style on this song, the melody is gorgeous and the production is superb. It's easy to underestimate this song.
I could tell from your original reactions that you would be a Paul person. I also love what John used to call "Paul's Granny Music" your mother should know, honey pie, Martha my dear etc...
You should check out "you gave me the answer" by Paul mccartney and wings.

“Martha My Dear” is one of the most charmingly perfect songs I’ve ever experienced. I must admit it has been my favorite Beatles song for many years and “Mother Nature’s Son” is in my top 10!

What Alan said. I was 12 when the albim came out, and I went through phases of liking particular sides. Within each side there are great, not as great, and throwaway songs. What is very interesting is that the British releases of the vinyl had no lead-in grooves for each song - so you COULD NOT skip songs easily or even find songs easily. Nowadays we are used to skipping things…
About a month ago I listened to the whole album while on a trip - the first time I had done so in many years. It was like having a seven course meal, just - “splendiferous”. It’s important to sometimes have the patience to do that. I understand Caroline’s opinions, but applying the same measuring stick to “Wild Honey Pie” - or “Revolution 9” - doesn’t make sense to me for an album like this.
I would also recommend listening to all of side 4 in the dark, lying down, eyes closed. The FEELING of Rev 9 going into “Good Night” is not unlike is evoked in Fantasia’s “Night On Bald Mountain” going into “Ave Maria”…but your mileage may vary!

I've been listening to this album for 50 years. I tended to agree with your ratings, thinking my rating just before you revealed yours. Your S's and A's are all on my phone's play list. I do have Dear Prudence rated there too though. While My Guitar may just be my favorite Beatles' song of all. Great vid Caroline 💖
When you get older and older and you still listen to The Beatles, you realize, you love all their songs. You will appraciate them more as time go by. Even if you are not a fan of faster, harder songs of theirs(as I noticed) , you will like them in the end. It is the magic of The Beatles. Have a nice day folks✌️

You ranking "Rocky Raccoon" as an S just shows you have great taste. That song is hugely underrated both musically and lyrically, imo.
It tells a beautiful redemptive story of a young mountain man getting his life back together and has no reason to sound as heavenly as it does for a song called Rocky Raccoon.

As someone who grew up with the Beatles, certain songs take on emotional weight because of associations we've had with those songs. For me (and this may sound weird to some), I have a strong emotional link with "Everybody's Got Something to Hide 'Cept for Me and My Monkey". When I was in College, there were two student-run film series. The Sunday night one was "Cinematech", which tended to be older movies, generally classics, cult classics, and classic foreign films. And they always used to play side 3 of the White Album in the auditorium prior to the movie. That song would come up almost always right before they'd start the film. It's a fond memory that I still have from so many years ago. Because it was (usually) the last song before the movie, it was the only one that got stuck in my head. To this day, I just love that song. I have no idea what it means, but I just love it.

Glad to have you back doing more Beatles stuff. I like that you can distinguish between the musical nature of a song from whether it vibes with you. So much of reactions to media that I've seen/heard/read fail to make that distinction, which makes those reactions incomplete.
Once you're done putting all Beatles songs into tier lists, you should go watch the Get Back documentary and see what their process was like.
I love that you go right in and take this on - it is so subjective. I really like your selections and I love that the Beatles took so many risks on this album. Forget the S and A's, there are a healthy amount of B's that make this album so strong. Hope you are doing well!

Fun fact, Donovan taught John and Paul the guitar picking style they use in Dear Prudence, Blackbird, Julia and other songs. And he (Donovan) is very proud of being the one who taught them such an iconic guitar style.
Donovan didn’t teach Paul. Donovan taught John and Paul watched as he walked around and then came up with his own picking pattern
Donovan is a terrific writer/performer. His 7-TEASE album from the early seventies is brilliant. Almost like his WHITE ALBUM or ABBEY ROAD. Beautifully produced and the songs are all so different from each other and always melodic.

John Lennon loved his bed. There's an entire genre of songs about being hopelessly exhausted: "I'm So Tired," "I'm Only Sleeping," and Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4" come to mind immediately. Lennon lived inside his dreams. I know the feeling.

Thank you for going back to the Beatles, I hope it is not only for us viewers. My experience with the White Album after decades is not so much what I would skip or not, but what pops into my mind going around daily chores and routines, inducing me to sing or hum, mostly expected after all this time, but sometimes still quite unexpected. Martha My Dear is very high on my sing along list, as is Sexy Sadie (the intro is most important), Why Don't We Do It..., I Will, I'm So Tired, Honey Pie, Long Long Long. After watching this video I expect Obladi Oblada to help me vacuum the floor.
After having listened to most Beatles music now I wonder if you can detect their influence on other artists, I mean, more than Billy Joel. Sometimes I feel stunned if some new artist captures the sound or key changes or whatever so well that you think well that must have been a Beatles song I missed out on when I first hear them. There have been quite a few through the years.

He is an absolute genius with melody and creating a time and space. The Beatles are at their best when all pulling together, but it doesn't hurt to have some of the greatest melodies in the last hundred years to work with. In some way, though, it's easy to try to rank the White Album songs because they are so varied and some will appeal to you more than others. In that vein, I hope you'll take on the harder job of ranking songs on Abby Road. Good luck with that! All the best.
One thing that makes me rate 'Back In The USSR' higher is the fact that it's a parody of Chuck Berry's 'Back In The USA, with the chorus being a parody of the Beach Boys 'California Girls.' It's making fun of Americans tendency to sing songs about their county and things in their country being so much better than others, so Paul's point of view is that of a Russian spy returning home to the Motherland. For me, the song is very funny, with Paul singing about having 'Georgia on my mind, ' only it's the Russian Georgia, and the choruses sounding like the Beach Boys.

While My guitar Gently Weeps is a good choice, but I love all of Harrison's compositions on this record especially Savoy Truffle. Something about those distorted saxophones that grabs me. When you put the needle down on the record, you listen till the end...(no skipping). The Beatles have mostly feel-good songs. Bravo good staying power. Hi Caroline! I accidentally stumbled across your reaction video to Rubber Soul several months ago. As a long time Beatles fan I was curious to watch, even though most reaction videos I've seen lack substance in my opinion. That's why I was pleasantly surprised when you actually provided some analysis, and insight to musical techniques. I know almost nothing about music, other than I know what I like to hear. Your knowledge of music coupled with your energy, and charm made me decide immediately that I wanted to watch all your Beatle related content.
Life gets in the way, but today I finally got to your last video on the topic. Thank you for your hard work. I thoroughly enjoyed every video. I laughed several times at some of your reactions. Maxwell's Silver Hammer springs to mind.
I'm sure you're busy. I see that you haven't posted in a few months, but I thought I'd throw a suggestion your way. If you are at all interested in going a bit further with John, Paul, George, and Ringo maybe react to their post Beatles albums.
Now I don't mean ALL their albums! That would take a lifetime. It might be interesting for you to check out the album that is generally considered the best of each member post Beatles.
"Imagine" is widely considered John's best.
Shortly after the Beatles broke up Paul formed a new band called Wings. Wings was essentially Paul's backing band more or less. "Band on the Run" is considered Paul's best effort after the Beatles split.
Since George played second fiddle to Paul and John, he only got a couple songs on each Beatles album. As a result he had a HUGE backlog of music. This excess of songs turned into his debut solo album, "All Things Must Pass". His first, and best. For me the crying shame is those songs could have been Beatles songs.
Easily Ringo's best album is "Ringo". It's seen as the closest thing we got to a Beatles reunion, because the other three all contribute songs to the album, and perform I believe. Though they were never all in the studio at the same time.
Anyway, I hope you're well. For what it's worth I'd be interested in seeing you react to these four albums. Thanks!
one thing about beatles songs is that the dont hit all at the same time.... you are going to find that maybe in a couple of years you get obsessed with a song that didnt got your attention on the first time once you understand the concept...
Thanks so much, Caroline! It's good to see you doing well. There are several of The Beatles' tunes that I frequently skip past (generally their earliest works). They can't all be winners to everyone's ears. "The Beatles" (white album), "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" are the ones I listened to the most while growing up, thus becoming my favorites. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a masterpiece.
...beautifully done, 'Caroline' - my list of course would look different but not very... I had that whiff of nostalgia watching this, as I was completely hooked into your Beatles catalogue marathon... what I very much loved about your choices here is, that you took heart for Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Martha my Dear and Good Night - all songs that get too easily dismissed by most critics for being 'too shallow' ...I think you need to feel them in your guts and allow the happiness and warmth in them to soak you up and 'infect you', to appreciate them... so thank you - watching your WA ranking left me with a warm and content feeling... :)

The only ranking that particularly surprised me was Back in the USSR. These things are all very individual, even though I've loved The Beatles for many years, this is the record that I listen to the least.

Another great video. I'm from Liverpool and we're so proud of our musical heritage. Did you know that our city (of about 500 k people) has had by far the most uk number one singles than most other cities combined? It is absolutely no coincidence that The Beatles came from Liverpool. Here's just a small list of other artists over the decades from my city that have sold millions of records, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Atomic Kitten, The La's, Echo and the Bunnymen....

Hey Caroline, it's fun to see you back doing Beatles stuff again. I enjoy the album as a whole, I guess I think of it as a painting or a tapestry as a sum of it's parts, quirky songs and all. I'm not surprised at your rating of Revolution 9, but if you could hear the surround mix there's a small (tiny) chance you might rate it differently. By the way, I've been re-watching the X-Files lately and when Gillian Anderson came on screen the first time I thought, "Hey, she looks like Caroline!"

I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting The Beatles' records with you. Made me remember how enchanted I was when I first heard them back in the 80's as they were released in order on CD (funny silver round things you may have seen in thrift shops) for the first time. I broadly share your rankings bar one - Helter Skelter, for me, is a phenomenal S tier rocker of all time. It's so interesting that Paul had a song like that in him while also turning in something as sublimely beautiful as Blackbird. I hope to hear more from you, it's always a real treat to see you've uploaded something new.

Really well thought out. I agree with most of your rankings, though I’m a bit surprised that Back in the USSR wasn’t higher. The two that really surprised me were Sexy Sadie, which I think is a great song anyway, and it’s even better once you realize that the original title was Maharishi, and my jaw just dropped when you ranked Helter skelter so low. Overall, very well done. I’m still waiting for your top five list of the best songs from the last half of the Beatles catalog.
Back in the USSR isn't bad for sure, though it's also something of a pastiche. And California Girls isn't a favourite of mine anyway.
Sexy Sadie is fun, maybe it has an unusual sound like Me and My Monkey, but I like both.

Lovely reaction. A cool memory of mine with Blackbird, I found it in my English textbook in 8th grade as a poem (ca. 1980.) I convinced my teacher to cover it in class, and I actually brought my White Album into school so the class could hear it when we discussed it.☺
That was fun and very honest. My own rankings are pretty different but sometimes it's where you are in life when you hear a song that makes all the difference. I never paid much attention to I'm So Tired until I went through a very rough relationship breakup back in late 80's. The mood and lyrics of that song captured my feelings perfectly. It's not a song about being sleepy. It's a song about being so depressed you can't get out of bed and you can't stop your mind from replaying events over and over. I'd give you everything I've got for a little peace of mind. But I'm so tired.... Exactly!
It's one of those simple, raw John songs, both in terms of melody and emotional resonance for me: "I don't know what to do." I mean, what more is there to say, really? It's up there with "Love," "How," "Oh My Love" and others and it's why I love John. I love Paul and he's preternaturally musical and we all know what makes him so great but the simple truth is, as beautiful and powerful as his work can be, his stuff just doesn't make me feel the way John makes me feel. Maybe it's *because* Paul is more talented musically that his craftsmanship works (for me) to obscure his raw feeling rather than to express it, I don't know.
Anyway, all of which is to say yes, agreed about "I'm So Tired."

He's astonishing in so many areas -- as a composer, singer, multi-instrumentalist -- that it seems small-minded to criticize his work at all. So I'll say up front, I'm in awe of his talent, I love many of his songs and the Beatles would not have been anywhere near as iconic without him. But (there's always a 'but' in these kind of comments) while I am in awe of Sir Paul, to me he is still a cipher even after all these years. His songs are unbelievably melodic, his lyrics can be poetic (or not - that's for another posting) but they never give away anything about the inner Paul McCartney. John always seemed to give away more than he intended. The so-called tough guy was a fascinating heap of contradictions and they were all on display in his songs, whether he wanted it that way or not. Because of that, his songs reach me. Paul can make me smile but only John can make me cry.

Nice to see you again Caroline! I pretty much mostly agree with most of your ratings. We differ a bit on a few of them but the general feel is pretty close. I don't know if you've listened to it but knowing that you like 'Long Long Long' I suggest you listen to the remixed version that Giles Martin did a few years ago. He brought the harmonies up in the mix and really balanced things nicely. It's absolutely gorgeous! I'd be interested to hear how you rank their albums in the same way. Which do you listen to the most...least. Honestly the white album is probably the one I listen to the least. To me it's a kind of disjointed album, with really great songs mixed in with some....shall we say...less great songs. Using your ranking system, most of their albums' songs rank from S to B with the odd C mixed in. However, like you say, there are definitely some F's here. Great job as always!
