  • The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge and Dr Stephen Layton are joined by brass and timpani of Britten Sinfonia for this performance of Hubert Parry's 'I was glad' at a special service of Evensong to mark the Coronation of HM King Charles III in Trinity College Chapel on Sunday 7 May 2023.
    This performance features the 2023 Coronation Vivats [3:08]. The Vivats are Latin acclamations originally made by the King’s Scholars of Westminster School to greet kings and queens on their arrival at Westminster Abbey for their coronation. Hubert Parry incorporated the Vivats into his original 1902 composition for the Coronation of HM King Edward VII, and they have been modified for the work's performance at each subsequent Coronation. The Vivats are omitted from regular performances of 'I was glad'. Choirs around the UK and Commonwealth were authorised to use the 2023 Vivats for services over the Coronation weekend by Westminster Abbey.
    The full service can be watched in full at our website 'Listen Again' archive, which contains the audio and video of all services livestreamed from Trinity College Chapel since 2012.

    I have probably listened to this twenty times since its release. My red hair tingles when I do. I think I am a Brit trapped in an American's body.

    I would never deny Dr Layton's greatness, but he does seem to be somewhat over-conducting, especially for a group in such close proximity.

      to me he‘s definitely NOT over-conducting, it seems that your ears just missed out one partaking instrument far away…. ;-)
      it‘s not only the choristers and brass band close by, but also the organ, that meddles about - and that organist who would have to be integrated is sitting on the rood screen/organ gallery some 20 or 30 m away, one storey higher, in the back of the conductor, having a rückpositiv standing just in his sight.
      To make things worse, he’s facing of course his own playing console, which means turning the back towards the conductor and he’d be having just some tiny back mirror to catch sight of the conductor… AND that mirror is sitting somewhere in the outskirts of the organists visual field, besides the music sheets and stops… AND in that mirror the arms of the conductor would be appearing with a length of only 3-5 centimetres at maximum…
      so, nope, nah…. in my conclusion Dr Laytons is doing just the right thing by giving a broad hint and waving about… 😅

    does anybody know who arranged the brass/timpani parts?

    • @ecclesorganfestival4430
      @ecclesorganfestival4430 Před 4 měsíci

      The arrangement was done by Chris Hazell in 2008. Not sure how one goes about obtaining the sheet music.
