This is great! I’m new to fighting games and I struggle to manually dash with the stick using my left hand... but I noticed my right hand can do it no problem so this video really helps, as I noticed that it’s not always advantageous to use the dash Macros.

That was really cool that you showed the cross-handed technique at the end. I was about to do your cool easy mod...then realized that it actually feels really natural just to cross my right hand over the left to play right-hand stick. Easiest "mod" of all time. Thank you for such a comprehensive review of the options....plus now if I ever want to play a real arcade game, I can just play cross handed if I want right stick. Very fun!

I am ambidextrous but I do prefer some games with the left hand rather than the right. A couple of days ago I bought my first arcade stick and I do have to play with my hands crossed which due to the somewhat small size of the controller makes me a little uncomfortable. But thanks to the video I came to the conclusion of buying another one and doing what you did, modifying the directions and having one dedicated to each hand. Thanks for the video. Greetings.

I always wondered why Arcade sticks almost all were "left handed" while normal one-button joysticks, like Atari CX40 are right handed. Your video shows a good compromise to change that with some models. Although the button layout isn't that ergonomic anymore. 🤔

You use your dominant right side hand for everything else like stirring food cooking and writing and loads of other things, but I feel like it's the particular hand position and the muscle memory of the left hand that counts a lot even though that non dominant left hand may be weaker and not as mobile and flexible in general as the right hand for example, the familiarity seems to be more important in overall performance. I was able to actually able to do fireballs and circular movement better with my right hand which surprised me after all these years!
At least at first. Even though i can execute a movement perfectly again and again like in King of Fighters 98 where there is no margin for error in the way they made the inputs, they have to be perfect and that's how the game is designed, and they are not as lenient such as Street Fighter where they allow for some difference between input timing or variation range etc etc, I still felt that my right hand could do them slightly better even if with the left hand they were already 'perfect'.
The non dominant left hand has practiced those motions millions of times, the Dominant right hand is better in every single way, EXCEPT for maintaining those repeated movements over and over again without getting tired and most likely maintaining exact timing execution with the punch and kick buttons.
Overall the repeated movements of the left hand win even if your dominant right hand can do them more quickly or fluidly but for a shorter period of time and obviously if it can;t go as long in that position needed then that's a disadvantage. Everyone is different though!
Interesting to try and reminded me of when my twin brother first managed to pull off a fireball on SF2 on the Amiga, using the arrows on the keyboard when we were 5, I don't think I ever managed it or ill ever try lol but doing fireballs with my non gaming hand brought this memory back, felt strange like cleaning teeth with the other hand, great video thanks!

Hello joystick NY. Love the video about the right hand stick. Of course this video assumes you're fairly mechanically well inclined to work on the innards of a joystick.
I had personally designed and submitted to Hori USA a design of a special stick called a Sinister stick, which is probably the first six or more button ambidextrous fight stick.
Before this the last off the shelf ambidextrous fight stick was a Beeshu Genesis Gizmo with three buttons, which came out before Championship Street Fighter 2 on the Genesis.
I got a website with my design that's Hori USA approved, and solves easily 90% of the economic issues of left hand versus right hand and ambidextrous versus monodextrous. The only question is the last 10% which is cultural which may have something to do with Hori of Japan or Japan in general not wanting a right-handed fight stick.
My first home video game system was a collection and during that second generation of games starting with in television ending with the vectrex, every console that generation (Intellivision, Colecovision, Atari 5200, Arcadia 2001, and even first generation holdover Bally Astrocade) all featured ambidextrous controllers. Odyssey 2 was hard wired right-handed. Atari 2600 had many solutions for the Lefty who couldn't use the standard right-handed joystick well. And bucking the trend was the Vectrex.
The problem is building a cheap controller that is ambidextrous comes at an ergonomic cost: usually of requiring you to switch hands in the middle of gameplay at a convenient loss of life or change of level just to avoid cramping.
Growing up at this time most arcade joysticks had the joystick in the center and the fire buttons on both sides. Naturally for pretty much any of the games I chose stick-right except for a game which forced your hand (pun intended) and then I just learned a deal with it.
Two topics I noticed you did not cover when right-handing a joystick. Well you kind of covered it but you didn't notice that the contour of the buttons If you need an eight button game will kind of cock your left wrist backwards trying to reach all eight buttons.
The other question is in Street Fighter I tend to want "mirror- symmetric" buttons. Keep the quick attacks on the index finger the middle attacks on the middle finger, the heavy attacks on the ring finger and the super attacks on the pinky.
Most schemes seem to follow the mirror symmetric path. The only games that don't in my opinion are Tutankham and Sidearms, both of which have fire left and fire right buttons.
Also did you notice that Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Edition lets you remap the joystick to a Sinister arrangement?
If you want to read more about my design of an ambidexterous joystick, and how me and four other people kept the local Street Fighter champ in a "prison game" (a reverse of King of the Hill: loser stays in prison winner goes free) the local Street Fighter champ who later became a national cable television all around Xbox champ couldn't get out of prison. He literally had a life sentence when facing the right-handed stick and the five of us. I wouldn't have been gung-ho on sales so much if it had only been just me who literally went from winless to lossless going from left-handed to right-handed but for the people did too.
Read everything on my website sinistersticks.com

Interesting info. Maybe I'm misunderstanding but from your wiring page, it would seem it would be better to do that in the firmware (if you're outputting to USB) than to have actual physical wiring. Even if you're not, it would probably still be better to do it with circuitry than physically. Though that does remind me of a joystick interface for the ZX Spectrum where you would select which keys on the keyboard the joystick would drive with wire jumpers.

      Appreciate you 🙏❤️

    • @jackofallgamesTV
      @jackofallgamesTV Před rokem

@@chaos.corner that is only my "personal model". One that I can reasonably describe to people without worrying about coding or electrical engineering, or anything like that.
If Hori decides to make a professional Sinister Stick obviously it would have 2 USB B Meso Males, one on each end, one representing a left move, amd one representing a right move, both in the back when accessing the stick in the front.
Actually I kind of have a bulk adapter called a DB37. Why not a 20 pin? Because of one system people ignore, the Colecovision.
Because the CV has 2 retruns, in order to have a completely flexible system, each signal has an individual ground, and is carried with the signal on a separate pin of a DB37.
Luckily the signals are (unlike second generation complex controls) uncoded. If button x is hit, button x activates. Imagine working with Colecovision or Intellivision codes. The buttons work both as "shift keys" and as action buttons, whether one or 2 pins are actuated, and the joystick pins can also be used for the keypad.
That's why they say necer actuate a keypad and either a disc direction or a button simultaneously or else you'll get unpredictable/undesired results/system crashes/runtime errors.
