Should You WORRY? What Nintendo 3DS & Wii U Online Severs Shutting Down Means For You

  • Nintendo announced that the online multiplayer severs for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will be shutting down in April of next year. Similar to the Nintendo eShop closure, there's a lot of concern surrounding it. But should you worry? Here's what will likely happen when the severs shut down for games like Splatoon and Mario Kart 8. Pokemon Bank is NOT affected

People are already working on creating servers whatever they are private just for people to have access to these games in terms of multiplayer. It’s up to us to preserve these games because we know Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft won’t.

The reason the DS and Wii's online were cut so early wasn't _entirely_ Nintendo's fault. The company that was handling online functionality for those systems, Gamespy, shut down their online multiplayer services. Nintendo moved the most important features to their own infrastructure, but online play was over for the most part. I don't know if this is 100% confirmed, but it's the general consensus. My point is that the DS and Wii's early closures weren't the intention, not supposed to be normal.
All that said, not many people were playing online on DS and Wii anyway. The online wasn't fleshed out on those systems, and while there were some big online titles like Animal Crossing, Mario Kart Wii, and especially Pokemon (all of which already had 3DS sequels with far more robust online functionality,) I don't think online was all that popular on DS/Wii.
But you know what gets me? A *_ton_* of people still play 3DS and Wii U games online. Smash, Mario Kart 7 and 8, Pokemon, New Leaf, Kid Icarus, and *_especially_* Splatoon. These games still have surprisingly large playerbases. Why shut the servers down when so many people are still playing? Yes, we'll have Pretendo, but not many people will be willing to use that.
I definitely don't feel like it's surprising that they lasted this long. If anything, I think it's too early. I know it's inevitable, and if we're truly getting a new console next year then the 3DS and Wii U will be two generations old, but the PS3 and Vita are still going! Heck, Mega Man Powered Up was a PSP game that only recently shut down operations. The 3DS and Wii U really aren't _that_ old, a lot of people still play games on them. At least give us a few more years!

    • @JustEpic_Yt

100% agree with everything you said
Edit: Plus the fact that the ps3 online is still working which is older than the 3ds and Wii u is crazy (and technically they both sort of in the ps4/Xbox one generation) I think if they wanted to close the stores they could’ve waited a little longer

      @plows2940 Před 7 měsíci +14

Hot Take: If anything I actually think this is worse than the eShop closing - at least most games were still available physically. This shutdown is going to strip most games of core functionality regardless of if they are physical, digital or pirated - games like Splatoon will be most affected. You won’t even be able to download levels in Mario Maker either. Even smaller gameplay elements involving things like Spotpass will no longer work in games like Fire Emblem Awakening.
Unlike with the DS/Wii this decision is completely arbitrary - at least before it was because GameSpy shut down. The 3DS/Wii U are only one generation old - the same generation as the PS4/Xbox One - and Nintendo are already pulling the plug. Most consoles in circulation aren’t even a decade old they were still selling new 3DS consoles only three years ago!
Private servers will likely be a thing but even then not every game will be supported and getting access to said private servers is just another hoop for potential players to jump through - further diminishing player counts. Additionally player made content like Animal Crossing dream towns and Mario Maker levels will likely not be preserved and survive the transition to custom servers meaning this content will likely be gone for good once the official servers go down.

Yeah, when the big companies do nothing to help preserve the games an media that we care about and allow us to access it officially, then turning to piracy and unofficial means will become the norm. As Gaben said "Stopping piracy is not a matter of offering a better price, but offering better service", and bringing this up to Nintendo would make them shutter since they know that they are still providing a lackluster service with minimal replacement. Thanks to the actions that they do to prevent Piracy from happening, they end up creating even more by doing the things they do.

I think the thing I'm the most worried about with this impending shutdown is all of the downloadable content that's obtainable through SpotPass, and I'm surprised not a lot of people are talking about this. I'm not too worried about SpotPass functionality in games going away, since it seems like Pretendo already has that covered, rather I'm worried about the extra free DLC some developers have made and released through SpotPass like the extra items in Animal Crossing/Tomodachi Life, or nearly every puzzle in the StreetPass plaza, which Nintendo confirmed would stop being sent out come April 2024.
When Badge Arcade functionality got stripped away earlier this year Pretendo did confirm that they're working on a replacement server for it, but also stated that any official badges would not be obtainable due to copyright issues involving Nintendo's IP, and I'd imagine the same will be true for some of this free DLC, especially in the case of those StreetPass puzzles as those have tons of assets featuring Nintendo's characters.
It also doesn't really help that it's somewhat cryptic to back up/restore this data too, as there's not really any guides anywhere and no central repositories where you can download this soon-to-be lost media, so I really hope more people can band together and preserve this content

Slight misconception: The 3DS/Wii U eShops were not shut down. The truth is actually infinitely more baffling and frustrating.
All they did was remove the ability for you to purchase new content there. Only if you have purchased the stuff before the ability to buy it was removed can you download what is on there. All of the games are still on it's servers, they are just hosting them for free, while forcibly gatekeeping them.
Why did they do this? I don't know! The accounts you use for those eShops are the same accounts you use for the Switch eShop, so it wouldn't have been a hassle to keep that part of it going. Will the locked up games be around after the servers shut down? Probably not? They didn't say anything about them in the announcement, so who knows.
Legitimately the most confusing business decision I have ever witnessed from a company, particularly for one that hates piracy as much as they do.

I think in terms of actual consequences, shutting down the official 3DS servers is worse than the eshop shutting down. On paper the eshop is worse because it means theres no official way to obtain them, but it's still pretty easy to get them in other ways.
There will be fan servers for the 3DS so you'll be able to play them online again, but it will drastically reduce the amount of players who are playing online anymore because there will be many people who don't realise you can mod a 3DS to go online, and the amount of players online on 3DS is low already.

I see this more as an inevitability, there reaches a point where the technology in these servers becomes too old to reliably function, combined with a barren player base I can see why Nintendo would close the 3DS/Wii U servers. Plus I believe the Wii and DS servers were partially owned by a 3rd-party company, Gamespot I think, and it was partially their choice to close these servers as well, dont source me on that though. Is it a shame, yes it is, but sometimes nothing is forever. And for those still interested in playing 3DS games online, there are always third-party solutions.

Some games like Fire Emblem Fates will be massively affected. It has its own servers where every players fort is uploaded, and can be visited by other players. You can challenge their units, get items that you otherwise cant, etc. Its a game that does sort of need to be played with the online functionality to really get the most out of it.
When the servers go down, all of this data will be gone. Even with private servers, all of that player data will be lost. You will only be able to access the forts of players on that private server.

even games like monster hunter 3u for wii (which mind you died a long time ago) just had fan servers come out for it, we are already at mh 5 going onto 6. Games of the past can easily get fan servers or translations if it wasnt realeased here.
So im not worried about games like animal crossing new leaf not being online anymore or games like monster hunter, but live services like you said like mario 35 will be lost to time forever. Hopefully, the switch servers stay up a long time even after the next gen switch title comes out, though at least that might be backwards compatitble.
But games like f-zero 99 will prob go down once they run outta tracks and other live service games will just cease to exist.

If they really want people to buy their Switch Online, there will be a lot of work, by start that we still waiting since 6 f*cking years for a new Star Fox and a new Metroid game on the Nintendo Switch with a Online Mode for Vs Mode or Co-op mode and I talk about a new game, not a lazy port from the Nintendo Swich Online for play a old game from previous console on the Switch but it's gonna be very difficult for them since they enjoy be focus on recycled grab money bullsh*t game who are release every years and who are Pokemon, 5 Fire Emblem games and 6 Kirby games since 2017 because they become addict to games who are more popular in Japan and who made them win a lot of money even if they don't have to put a lot of effort in it, that explain about why Fire Emblem Engage was a garbage or those last Pokemon games with a community who doesn't stop complaint about too much negatif thing with those last Pokemon games like ugly graphics and lags.

Games Like Super Mario Maker, Smash, and The Black Ops 2 Port for Wii U will have communities that have formed around them destroyed, Especially in the case of the original Mario Maker. If you are not creative or good at making levels, that game will be as good to you as a paperweight next year. It'll be very interesting when Nintendo decides to shut off the Switch's Internet Functions, given how popular the Switch is compared to the Wii U.

Imma write an essay but what I will say you will have to agree with me:
So the Wii U was a greater console than you think. Wii U has 1080p graphics a great design and many games that are now on the switch. for the Wii U is better than the switch because Wii U was actually going to be the successor of the Wii (Wii with better graphics and new tech) the Wii U didn't fail the Wii U succeed what made it fail is Nintendo. you might be wondering why Nintendo? the real reason is because they didn't made the announcements and all the directs that they were doing how they had to be. (For example they called the GamePad a controller) and more... For a console that was made in 2012 it had specs that they were out of this world for that year and by that I mean they were so good. Also if you didn't know by using an SD card you could mod or hack it and put every game you wanted from every previous Nintendo console. Lastly the online servers were still full of people because they knew too that the Wii U was so much better than the switch. Nintendo put so much effort on the Wii U, like the home screen, the gamepad, you could even use the Wii accessories and remotes for the wii u. With that being said I hope that you now understand why the Wii U is better than the switch and even than every console that exists until now( and when I say that I mean by having fun and enjoying every detail) I hope I helped 😊
