Shri Maha Bairavar Rudralayam stands gloriously amidst lush green hills; situated between the villages of Eechankaranai and Thiruvadisoolam of Chengalpattu district. The minute details in the design and sculptures of the temple is beyond comparison with its contemporaries.
The main deity of the temple is Shri Kshethra Bala Bairavar. Twelve steps, each representing one zodiac, lead up to the sanctum of Bairavar, the ruler of the zodiacs.
This temple also has other presiding deities besides Bairavar, including Rudra Vinayagar, Subramaniyar, Vaishanavi Devi, Azhagu Prathyankara Devi, Ashta Bhuja Vana Kaali Kanaga Durgai, Vanamaalishwarar, Panchamuga Aanchaneyar, Dakshina Murthy, Swarna Aakarshana Bairavar, Saptha kanniyar, and Saamundeshwari among others.
A renowned sanctum in the temple premises is the Pournami Guhai Kovil. The major highlight of the temple is the fact that it is situated under the ground and is open to devotees only on full moon day, Poorataadhi Nakshatra and Ashtami’s every month. Devotees practice austere lifestyle three days before visiting the sanctum and on the said day wear blue colored clothes, a color congenial to Bairavar.
This temple is home to Prapancha Roopini Bhooma Devi(mother Earth). The main door of the sanctum is open only on full moon days and Maham nakshatra every month for devotees.
The prevailing custom in the temple is to donate uncooked rice in order to clear the sins from previous births and to relish the prayers.
