    Just picked up my Medium board delivery from the post office and installed the LVL8 PSU. Looks great, very practical, lightweight and sturdy. Super happy with my purchase. Someone commented about the plastic clips for holding the cables underneath and I agree they can pop off easily or break but I think for weight reasons they're the most practical outside of zip ties.

  • @ksmith752
    @ksmith752 Před rokem +9

    Velcro direction: Most videos tell people to put the hook side on the pedal and loop (soft part) on the board. This is Backwards! If you have carpet in your music room every time you take a pedal off and set it down it sticks to the carpet. Unless you want to use your carpet as a pedal board put the soft loop side on the pedal and the hook on the board. Then you can set your pedals down on carpet while moving things around without them sticking to the carpet.

    Ended up with the medium sized version. Love it and plan on grabbing the tweed case for it too. Has basically everything you need. Only areas for improvement: power plug management (everything is neat and tidy..and then you plug the fender power brick in and the cable juts out the front); metal clips instead of plastic for the back (going to break or fall off); and better rubber plug inserts that somehow stay on the board when not in use.

    Nobody has mentioned this, but on the lvl12 you can easily convert the IEC out to a regular courtesy outlet. That IEC out isn’t just for daisy chaining another Engine Room, and I’ve confirmed this with Fender. You can buy a simple and cheap 1 to 1 or even a 1 to 2 IEC (male) to power plug(s) of your choice (female), and you can power all of those old pedals that have a 24v wall wart. Deluxe Memory Man, Q-Tron, etc… I do exactly this on my board and simply Velcro the wall wart underneath next to the Engine Room. No you shouldn’t power your guitar amp with that outlet, but you can definitely run some old pedals or a keyboard with it, or whatever else you may have that uses a wall wart or power cord. I think that IEC out is max 1.6A.

  • @jeanpauldupuis
    @jeanpauldupuis Před rokem +10

    I would expect third-party power supplies to fit imperfectly, but it is stupid that fender's own supply has the exhaust fan partially occluded. Maybe Pete needed to nudge it fully left, or maybe the cutout needs to be 5mm wider and idiot-proof. For top marks, the cutout should clip neither the fan, the screw heads, nor the decals on the branded supply.

    • @Eagle_eye__
      @Eagle_eye__ Před rokem +2

      You can position it so the fan is not blocked (I have the medium one). What’s annoying is the power brick cable placement right in the middle of the top, they should have included an angled plug at least (for the fender brick), or put the power input/output on the side of the brick (so it’s all inside the board).

    Just got the Medium Board and a Fender LV8 Power supply (I love that all outputs are 500ma) based on Pete's review. Must say I am delighted. I am just starting to populate the board. I have seen some criticism that the fitting for the Power supply has to be tightened so much to hold the supply that it bends the board. Well I have had no problem. I used the felt strips that are supplied and the Power Supply seems very secure. If anyone had any problem I would use a bit of Power Board Tape as a belt 'n' braces but not really needed. The second criticism I have read is that the clip system is not very secure. Again I have found no problem at all and I like the flexibility of the system. No cutting of Zip Ties if you need to rearrange Pedals. Overall I think Fender have produced a very good product which Pete demonstrated admirably. Made up my mind for me. Usual excellent service from Andertons.

    Hi all, i have the small, great looking board, with some cool design features. However....i have the One Spot CS7 power supply, this is slightly thicker/higher than the Fender engine room power supplies, it does fit underneath, but as a result, the bracket ended up being fractionally higher than the back of the pedalbaord, this resulted in it being very slightly uneven, i just put some extra rubber foam peices at the sides, to raise it, just a bit, and it's fine. Just putting this out there, for anyone thinking of buying this, and doesn't have the Fender engine room power supplies, just be aware of the height, and that it's the same, or thinner, than the Fenders. Apart from that, very happy with it!

    • @gfm1496
      @gfm1496 Před rokem +1

      Thank you. I have the CS7 and was wondering if it would fit. Good to know. The problem would have been more easily solved if they just used rubber feet with a bolt like every other pedalboard - then you could buy longer bolts and deeper feet to raise the board a bit more.

I'm just a stay at home play for my own enjoyment player and I realize a gigging player will benefit from the hopefully durable and quality electronics in the power supply. I have a cheap but decent 10 output PS that I can replace 7 times, if it fails before I reach the cost of the Fender 8 outlet one. The electrons don't seem to care. The board looks very well engineered and thought out ...and well, it's just cool looking! I don't think Fender is breaking ground here with anything and most likely people will be paying for the name. It doesn't look bad, dont get me wrong, but I've been using the Temple Audio pedalboard for over a year now and that is one of the most flexible and modular pedalboards out there...seems like Fender took a few ideas from them to create their boards.

      Temple audio boards is exactly what you are describing. If you are thinking of building a temple board make sure to put some painters tape under the pedal before sticking the plate on. Without Goo Gone that stuff is almost impossible to get off your pedal. Also when you use square plugs sp400's and mogami wire you can solder your cables to length wich makes your board less messy. All in all I do like their boards but the plates are a bit expensive. Also they dont have any pedal raisers for a second row.

    I've been on the "list" for a marcus Deluxe board since about February, but at this point i think i would be better off buying a fender board, the integration with the power supply just looks unrivalled, and also the way you can much more easily route the power supply cables without having to buy a million cable tidy's etc

    Personally I got tired of the velcro or dual lock on my pedals. I just use a slab of wood & bike chain loops to secure them to it. Have my power mounted under it with rubber feet & slide it in a case. Besides weighing more than an aluminum board, I have the advantage of mounting them anyway I want. I just drill holes where I need em. And I have 3 different wood slabs sizes for whatever board size I need.

      @cc c , just the loop ends. I just bought a link removal tool for 10 bucks I think. You end up with a ton of em. Half are flat ends & half have a bevel hole which is nice for the screw holes that are indented. Just bought wood screws from the hardware store to screw them to the board. Works great, cheap, & those babies are not coming loose. Just carry my handy battery screwdriver gun from harbor freight.
      Don't buy the ones they sell for pedals. You can buy a whole bike chain for that & get like 100 or more of em! The Nobels ODR1 Overdrive has loops just like em built into the pedal. Pretty sweet idea!

      @stevesalazar9658 Před rokem

      @cc c, I'll also add that on some pedals you'll need to buy longer pedal screws. 90% of the time the screws from the pedal are fine, but I have had to buy some that are a tad longer for some. Mostly the Xotic pedals. I also use rubber grommets on a couple like my all gold tc scf. I didn't wanna scratch it it's so beautiful & shinny. Lol. Plus it had a star allen head screws on it, so I changed em out for regular Phillips head screws. But yeah, a small rubber grommets is kinda nice between the pedal & links. While your at the hardware store pick up some U-Bolts for your handles as well, or even drawer handles even. 🤷‍♂️

      @stevesalazar9658 Před rokem

      @cc c keep in mind for most pedals you really only need 2 links. One per side is good enough. One at the top & one at the bottom of thr other side. Makes interchanging pedals quicker. The mini pedals sometimes need 3 or all 4 because they tend to lean with 2. Best of luck my friend!

    In this world of mini and boutique amps, not mic’ed or running through PA or anything, how many watts do you need to play with an acoustic drum set? Will these 5-20watt amps cut a drum set? Tube and Digital/solid state?
    Thanks

    • @neilsnow7973
      @neilsnow7973 Před rokem

      Not so much about wattage, but EQ. I've heard 100 watt solid state guitar amps get buried because they didn't have the right EQ...didn't change with a mic either because they "liked the sound" of their amp, so they ran the mixer channel flat! But I have had drummers tell me to turn my 15 watt solid state Fender amp down because it's "too loud" and that wasn't even all the way up and I wasn't running it through the mixer either and everyone could hear it good. I just sat it up on a stool next to the drum set and away I went until I got a drumstick thrown at me! I have heard tube amps get buried in the mix just as easily, but with my examples there was an acoustic drum set and a bass guitar with a good bass amp that had plenty of low rumble to help bury the guitar! Bass can quickly become your worst nightmare when trying to dial in a room for the band. Electric drums can be buried in a mix quickly too as far as what the audience can hear, but sound perfectly fine on the recording of the same session. It's the EQ vs the acoustics of the room. Volume of each can play a part too, as volume affects tone and how the sound waves move in relation to the room and each instrument.

    These look really nice, except the Small is still a bit too big. Pedalboard companies still haven't figured out that they need to make pedalboards that fit into standard airline underseat "personal item" flight totes, so if we could get a pedalboard that is no larger than about 390 mm x 290 mm (15.35" x 11.41", and even that is pushing it a bit), that would fit 8 full-size pedals (or a few more if you mix in some mini pedals), fit into a flight tote, and still leave a bit of room for a change of clothing and toiletries for a weekend gig. The Small being 18" x 12.8", there's no way it will fit in any bag that will fit under a standard airliner seat.
    In the US, the FAA provides for musicians to be able to fly with standard sized instruments as cabin baggage, but that will count as your one allowable piece of cabin baggage, leaving you with only a "personal item", if you want to travel to a fly gig without checking any baggage. I need a change of clothing, toiletries, iPad/iPhone/chargers, in-flight snack, and my pedalboard and a good pair of closed-back headphones (for hotel practice/songwriting) to fit in that bag. Instrument leads can go in my instrument case.

      Nothing quite like a huge corporation clawing their way into a niche market, undercutting the competition and masquerading as affordability.
