  • Playing tug with your dog is one of the most fun and beneficial games you can choose. There are some inherent problems, and one of them is teaching your dog how to let go of the toy in order to continue the game.
In this video I address this in 3 phases. It is simple to understand and apply and makes playing with your dog more fun and exciting. Not every dog will need every level of structure, but if they do, the information here is important.

I just stumbled across your video and was very impressed. I brought an 8 year old 100 lb GSD into my rescue and I'm starting to see that he's getting a little possessive of the ball. He's fixating on it a wee bit too much. Because he's still relatively new to me and decompressing from shelter life and being on the run, I don't trust him yet. I am working on basic obedience and he's very receptive to learn and the 'out' command is something I want to teach this dog. Watching you provide great explanations when your dog didn't out on command was brilliant. That's what people that are not professionals need to see because that is a reality for us when we start to teach a command. Too many polished video's out there that show perfect outs. Those video's are not helpful and yours was very helpful.

Nice to see what u do when she doesn't immediately react correcting to out..(second method)..
That type of thing helps us all when our own dogs land up doing the same..

Starting my Peke on the tug toys. He is doing well with steps 1 and 2 (your previous video) and we are now working on step 3. Step 3 is the most difficult of the 3. As you said, I'll give it time and keep working on this. Thank you so much for explaining and demonstrating this process so well.

    Thank you Robert (subscribed)...
Adding this to our routine (about 2 months ago) has improved my Malinois pup's out no end.
We are at the "having to work hard at impulse control" stage and this has helped understanding that the fun never stops, BUT IT STARTS with a good out (and then adding an increasing delay and/or additional tasks to restore focus as the command becomes "embedded" and almost automatic to the dog).
The direct consequence is the out from a sleeve is much, much better (which I thought was going to take two years rather than two months
to fix, given then ludicrously high drive and energy levels involved)
If ever you come to the UK I'll buy you a pint or two just on the strength of this tip alone fella ;-)

His suggested 'correction' is an example of the concept of 'positive punishment', which is perfectly fine.

How do you end a tug or Frisbee game when they have a high spirit or drive for them? I'm using the 2 toy method and having trouble leaving the park holding the Frisbees. I let her carry 1 and I go back for the other.... I would like to walk out with the dog and both Frisbees and her knowing the game is over. Shes an 8 months old GSD.

Hi. Love your videos. I am a bird dog trainer, and am training my doberman to be a bird dog. He is pointing and retrieving. My question- why do you have the dog drop items on the ground, rather than IN your hand, WHEN you ask for it? ( do that with a pheasant, and it might fly away. :o) )

How long should one train each of the techniques? As in, you start with both toys visible, then hide one toy, then use a less interesting toy to trade with, then use a treat etc, what is the correct time to teach the dog each one of these techniques before continuing to the next one? Minutes, hours, days?

Hi. This is great. Do you have a video on 1) how to finish this seemingly endless game? and 2) how to teach them not to go for the tug toy while I'm just casually walking around with it? Is it "leave it" practice? Thanks.

    • @mxer294
      @mxer294 Před 6 lety +3

You need to give your dog a treat and hide the toy when the game is over, preferably when they're not looking, I throw a small handful onto the grass so she has to go and search for them. I carry a small backpack or wear work trousers with big pockets to hide her tug toy and ball on a rope.

  • @swagatochakraborty2583

Great video. I have a 14 mo old lab. Who generally drops it back when I am playing with him - as he anticipates the game to continue / another toy / treats. However this behavior does not translate to him dropping pieces of wood or plastic or paper when we are not actively playing. Are these two different behaviors ? Can you please point me to any resource on how the bridge the gap between “drop a toy” when playing and “drop a piece of wood” when walking ?

@robertcabral so I think I’ve told you my dutchie has had some resource guarding issues and I been trying this method with some success but she at times doesn’t care about the other toy and it is identical to the other. I bought two identical jute tugs. She will still seem to fight or play the game even in a down.

Hello Robert! First id like to thank you for all the vids you put together. (Not to mention what you do for Shelter dogs) I have a question. In the research of motivation tools and drive, I was wondering if you'd play Tug (as a reward) with a retrieving dog such as (bird dogs or sport dogs)? Can he make the the difference over the retrieving object (bumper or bird) and the reward object (tug toy or a ball) I guess there's a fine line here but would appreciate to have your thoughts on that. Thank You Very Much!
