With the wood stove operational, it's time to start working on the next build project for the cabin - the LOFT! I have salvaged an old washed up dock from the bottom of the property at the water level, transported those materials up the mountain, and then back down again to the cliff cabin. This is what I am using to build the sleeping loft with. I've had it in my head to use those materials for the loft for a while, and also for a while I wasn't sure I was going to be able to pull it off, but alas, I think I can I think I can!
I have a small window of opportunity to go out to that cabin after about 3-4 days away, visiting family in the Okanagan. We will spend the night in the cabin, the first night with the wood stove working 😊. It definitely pumps out the heat, and is working like it should now. I do need to do a bit more spray foaming as I can see some gaps in the blocking and also in a few spots with the windows, but it kept me pretty warm. It does require a fair amount of babysitting, but that is to be expected with such a small stove.
I do run out of time and can't complete the loft this time, but I think (🤞🏼) I should be able to get it complete the next time.
Thanks for watching, thanks for supporting, and see you all in the next video!
    M 💕💝💃🏻

    Hi!
My personal opinion is: build the loft on the other side of the cabin. You will still have an awesome "nap-view" from there(maybe even better) and the cabin inside will feel much bigger that way when you are not blocking of the windows. :)
Cozy vibes with the stove going!

I agree build the loft at the back end then it is not blocking the light coming in the windows, you also have some space on the left hand side of the lockers to maybe store a ladder

Hi Michelle, Just a few thoughts. First, I wish you a happy safe New Years and with safety in mind Please attach a rail on the deck. As you get more snow and ice the danger increases. Make it a cable rail so it doesn't obstruct your view. Second, I thought the Loft was going to the back of the tiny cabin. Doing this will have many plus benefits. For example it allow light to still float the entire cabin, it move your sleeping bed further away from the coldest part of the cabin. This also allow you to put your kitchenette under the loaf and allows the rest of the space to be used a a living area. Finally, be prepared to stay there for a few days if needed. Have at least 5 days of food rations, multiple ways of communication (IE. Phone, Ham Radio, CB...etc) Just encase you get injured or snowed in. When walking the trails keep then with you. also carry a side arm or rifle for wild animals. I look forward to seeing you next video.

I gave a ton of thought to the layout of the cabin, and chose things for specific reasons, knowing there’s always another great way it could be.
From the beginning of time, before I even started building the cabin, I had a vision that whatever I built, I would have big windows at the front and a bed there so that I could lay and overlook the lake. I absolutely hear you that having the loft at the back keeps it really bright and would be the warmest spot, but I have to stick to my original vision 😬

Everyone's a critic behind the keyboard and I'm no different. The worst critic though is always us. Your little cabin is cute af and your projects are all great. Don't beat yourself up if they're not perfect, they're not supposed to be, they're just supposed to make you happy and make you learn and if they do that you win. Trust yourself and if the cut is off a bit then oh fking well.. I stopped measuring most things years ago and just work on touch and feel and get er done. That's a tight little fire box you have, and a long cold pipe and you have to prime it really good and get it real hot before it will suck air. Once you do that it will go and go all night. Thanks for sharing your journey with us, I think both you and it are quite wonderful. I would make the loft big enough for two or if not, I would make it for storage and not put it in front of those lovely picture windows. When you finish that thing up then make a big bed for it, a good beginner one would be like a shaker moon bed, easy to build and assemble. You're going to be a hell of a wood worker when this is all said and done.

    • @couerl
      @couerl Před 7 měsíci +1

Oh, and the ladder should just have hooks on the end and be removable like on the old bunk beds and you can hang it on a wall when not in use. Simple is the way to go as often as possible.

Michelle if it were me, i would put the loft on the back wall, one it does not block the windows, two you are sleeping over the heat (nothing like a Michelle burrito) and third it doesn’t lower your head space when you first walk into the cabin. Just my thoughts, you are doing great!!
Also put the ladder on a barn door style slide, that way you can move it anywhere along the bed, and out of the way when needed.

Seeing your videos pop up always makes the day better. Thanks to you for doing them. And thanks to Steve for not opposing you doing them. A lot of guys would be a butt about it. Like "StandForFreedom", I worry about you on the edge of the deck, especially in the snow or when wet. A concern about the cuts you made on the beam for the loft. You essentially turned it into a 2 X 4 laying flat side down. It might split off. So, I suggest running a bolt with big washers on both ends all the way through near the cut to strengthen it. For saving space, you might want to consider a store bought folding attic stair. And lastly, I know the view will be great sleeping next to the windows, but you will likely really feel the chill. Test for that by placing the back of your ungloved hand next to the glass. You will likely feel the air falling across your hand. I am all about you doing it the way that feels good to you, as long as you go with eyes open. Stay safe and have a wonderful day !

Here's an idea for your loft ladder. Depending on how heavy the ladder is, make a set of brackets so you can store it across the front of the loft vertically so it doubles as a guard rail. That way it is out of the way when you are in the cabin, you can take it down to climb up into the loft then once up there you can lift it up and put it in the brackets so it becomes a safety rail.

Hello Michelle, One idea I would like to share with you for your loft is to construct a rope ladder with wooden steps. It would retract it like a Venetian blind. I would recommend flush mount ankers in the floor. When the ladder is extended to the floor quick connect the rope to the flush mount ankers. Place the ankers far enough awas from the loft so the ladder is comfortable to climb. If you do not anker to the floor your feet will tip forward making climbing up or down awkward. I am sure Steve being so good with ropes would be able to help in the construction with all the knots he knows. When retracted it will free up floor space.

I like plan "B" in it's simplicity and more sleeping area room. A swinging ladder creates three cons . . .
    1- Reduced loft area.
    2- Greater complexity to build.
3- It will demand swing space robbing you of floor options as well.
Plus a removable ladder can have multiple uses in and around the cabin when you need higher (or lower) access to anything.
Good luck. Love your projects and say Hi to Steve and all the cute pooches.

You've got the major parts of the cabin now enclosed and heated. I'd plan to get a larger wood stove. You can now tweak the house to improve it, to expand it. The ladder to the loft can be designed as an architectural trellis to the ceiling when pulled up. I'm surprised that Canada hasn't gotten more snow.

I like the hinge and pully idea for the ladder. That would keep the floor area clear. I would go one further and put some kind of counterweight on it(against the wall or in the corner) So it retracts by itself when there's no weight on it(not like a bear trap or anything, but just enough weight to make it easy).

For the stairs to your loft, look into designs for “folding stairs”. There are wood designs that fold flat up against the wall. One would look and work great for your application. Also, just a thought, you might find that the location that the loft is going will block out a lot of light. You may want to consider locating it near the back of the cabin.

Not sure what you complete loft build plans are but you might want to put some sort of brace under the beam from the wall. Angle iron or wood... When you cut it to fit over the beam it weakens it...

Great work Michelle, Good thing you're sure footed except for that spill onto your tush, good for that coffee funnel it broke your fall, lol. It has become a winter wonderland out there and it looks amazing overlooking the mountains and lake just gorgeous. Superb saw cuts even if you over cut enough for expansion and contraction, space ad loft is gonna look legit. Thanks for Sharing with us take care.

I'm with you on procrastinating. I keep on taking on too much video projects that have piled up and sitting waiting for me to get to. I try to stay ahead on videos, so I don't put myself into trying to get one out in a hurry for my Friday loads. Then there is the honey dew list and my list around the house to do. I'm always busy which is good, but my knee is not liking it. I'm scheduled to go see my doctor the 5th and hopefully get in to have knee surgery this year. Will need to preload videos to release ahead for the time I'm recovering. Last time I recovered pretty quick but not sure this time how it will go?

My thoughts on the grate on the wood stove is it was added after the initial design. Without the grate the holes could allow sparks to escape, and the grate was added after for safety and liability reasons by the manufacturer. Just my thoughts.

Hi Michelle, Wishing you and Steve a blessed 2024. I love the new 💜jacket, pot plant and cofee device. Do your video schedule to what is comfortable and not a burden to You, Steve and all the paws! - When it stops being fun and starts to impact your thoughts and anxiety of time pressure, it's time to back off for a bit. I always look forward to your next adventure in the wilderness of BC. It really makes my day! Maybe space your attic bed back maybe a foot or so from the windows with a flat shelf? That will give you some elbow room, and keep you and your bedding back from the cold glass. You've been given some great ideas for the ladder steps using pulleys or springs. Blessings from me down in a much warmer but marine temperate New Zealand, David ❤
PS, until you can build a safety rail around the decking, please wear your body harness when outside on the deck, with a short fall arrestor strap connected to a large safety eye bolt screwed into a substantial beam of wood above the sliding door. That way, any slip will prevent you from going over the edge. You are far too precious to Steve and all of us! 🥰

Hey Michelle, happy new year 2024, sometimes you got to deal with your self preservation, making healthy choices is not uncommon it means you care about yourself. 😊👍 you could use a pulley system and set it up to have a mechanical advantage on it then use a lanyard to tie it off too.
Well the polar vortex has reached down here in Texas it was 3°f last night with a high of 20°f ,Monday its supposed to shift almost too the gulf of Mexico. The paw children are spoiled here everyone sleeps inside, wall to wall furry bodies.
Becareful out there you've taken a few falls, your backside has a crack in it already. Have a good week stay warm, and count your blessings amen.

I like the wood stove , great you got it working correctly !
That will make a huge difference in the cabin to have a good heat source !!
Tip ; want to keep your glass on your wood stove door more clear ?
Once you have a bed of coals built up move the coals to the door / glass !
The loft idea is great , find where it’s the most warm up there and work to construct that area !

    • @michygoss7148
      @michygoss7148  Před 7 měsíci +1

Funny - I was once told years ago to push the coals to the back!
I do think the cubic mini stoves are notorious for soot buildup on the glass - at least that’s what I’ve seen from other CZcamsrs who use those stoves. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @normanmallory2055
      @normanmallory2055 Před 7 měsíci +1

@@michygoss7148 That is possible too , coals moved back ! I tried it a couple times but thought the glass got more residue buildup quicker as the glass got darker quicker !
I tried both ways not that I thought the dealer was dishonest when he told me coals to the glass to help keep the glass cleaner !
Also he said some wood species has more resin then others ! That is true from the years I’ve spend cutting trees !
I could understand the theory behind coals close to the glass to help burn away resin residue buildup !
In the mini wood stoves with small fire boxes I can’t tell you that it would make a real difference because I don’t know that !

Perhaps instead of a loft you might consider a custom hammock arrangement. it could be raised and lowered by a pulley, no need for a ladder.

You could also use an attic access ladder that closes and folds up when not in use they make them in multiple sizes. A pair of yak tracks. Works great over your boots to keep you from slipping.

When you put on your new snow slippers & did your little dance it reminded me of the penguins in Happy Feet. So cute. & hell yes! why not add a little plant for that extra homey touch. In our small cabin we had a ladder that folded back against the wall then lifted up on a hinged box step to lean up against the loft. Worked well & was out of the way except when going up in the loft.

😂Hey Michy! Consider a rope boarding type ladder for the loft. Like used for troops embarking from ships, although obviously a smaller version. Steve could make you one. We have seen him using a Marlinspike/Fid. By now you relize the.thousands of fans not wanting you to launch yourself off the deck. A rope rail system would work well. Minimizing blocking the view. Again Steve would love being included, giving a little Nautical yet rustic theme. Stay away from a wire type rail, as that might attract Lightning!! We absolutely Love your cabin of solitude.! T&K

You took advantage of the time you had and got stuff done. That's all that matters. Getting stuff done always takes more time than what you thought, especially in the winter. Will I see you are back at it and its looking good. I would put the loft on the other side so your big pretty windows are not blocked and will still be able to see outside while sleeping in the loft . You already have the lockers on that side so you would not be taking away floor space .Make a nice railing for it and a latter you can take down and out of the way when not in use . OH yes you need railings around that deck B4 you wind up like that saw you cant find . You do a great job and it your space so make it like YOU like . I TRUST YOU, PLEASE BE CAREFUL AND STAY SAFE .

You really should consider putting a handrail around the edge of platform. When you slip on ice or snow you don't always get to decide where you are going to fall. Even a simple one rail handrail will give you a chance to catch yourself before going over the edge.

Second option on the bed but have the ladder hinged in the middle on front edge of loft. Then pulley it up to the peak of the roof. If that makes sense.
Or put loft on the front of the cabin so you have the windows in the loft.
