There are three main characters in the game, named Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Each of the three characters in the game has different abilities and powers in different areas. For example, because Trevor is a former fighter pilot, he is better than other characters at flying planes, jets, helicopters and other aircraft. Since Michael is a former bank robber, he is better at using a gun than others. Since Franklin is a vehicle thief, he is much more adept at driving cars and motorcycles than others. Players have the opportunity to switch between characters. When switching between characters, the player moves away from the character he is using towards a map and zooms in on the other character. The shorter the distance between characters, the shorter the transition process. There are many small activities in the game, such as riding a jet ski, participating in flying races (airplane competitions on a scale similar to a flight school) and off-road competitions, parachuting, acrobatics, yoga, doing triathlons, playing tennis and golf. Each character has separate hobbies.
