Wood is from Austrailia so probably colder in the states than people acclimated to the weather. I grew up in Wisonsin and lived in Arizona for a year in my early 20's during the summer it would reach 125 F and the winters got as "low" as 75 F and I'd be outside with a hat and jacket. Our bodies are weird.

Bob helping Wood with the soldering was the equivalent of the clay scene in Ghost.
This video was F'ing awesome. The dynamic these two have together is wonderful. It's like they have been friends for a lifetime even though they just started hanging out like a year ago or something like that.
For speaker issues, first order of business is replacing the 20+ year old capacitor in the audio circuit. Also hitting the headphone jack with some isopropyl alcohol because there's a mechanical switch in there that can get dirty. If it's still too quiet (the GBC is pretty quiet relatively) there are audio amp options out there to pump up the volume.
Yeah i think the capacitor will fix mine. I replaced the speaker with a real game boy color speaker after this video, I'm just waiting for the new capacitor to come cause I broke the one I ordered for the video lol

a replacement speaker should have the same impedance, usual values are 4 and 8 ohms. i'd hazard to guess the switch speaker was higher than the gb.
i love these videos , the concept of a tutorial following the tutorial honestly really helps me do it myself because I get the commentary side that you dont get out of the tutorial scripts so please keep them up!
for the future, you wanna get some solder flux. it makes the whole process *so much* easier. just remember to clean off the residue with IPA afterwards.
yeah i learned to start using that recently. we were using it it just wasn't on the cut

Niiiiice! Literally just finished my GBC mod; IPS screen (with the colour changing logo), new shell, buttons, membranes, new speaker and amplifier to get louder sound out of it, as well as a rechargeable battery mod too :) Also done a fully modded Game Gear too!! Loving the retro stuff!!

The capacitor you put in with the speaker is going to act like a filter. It’ll filter out noise at some frequency. You need to match the impedance of the old speaker to get it to work like the old one. Else you have to add additional circuitry and power to correctly power the switch speaker

I had just finished modding a GBA with the Minish Cap shell and IPS screen but I already had a GBA that needed a good shell. I went to start doing a GBC with the original GB color shell/buttons but after adding up the price for all the parts and a decent GBC on ebay, I ended up buying a prebuilt one for around $180.
If only the Analogue Pockets weren't back-ordered until sometime 2023...

For anyone doing this mod the black tab that’s below the tch pad IS the touch sensor no need to solder a seperate touch sensor on…also for the low volume clean the volume wheel with some 99% ipa and replace all the capacitors on the motherboard and if your going that far may aswell pick up a funny playing speaker replacement 👍👍

I got all the bits and bobs in a box waiting to be assembled into my dream gba, ips 2 screen, speaker mod with amp, capacitor replacements clicky bumper switches, its gonna be great.
Flux would make your soldering so much easier, it helps the solder to flow ✌️ just need to clean with IPA after, fun to watch you guys work through this tho 👍

I've been a tech for 30 plus years. The trick to getting a good soldier joint is using plenty of heat so you get a good connection and don't use to much soldier. Get your joint hot b4 you apply soldier and just touch the connection and the end of your iron at the same time

Macho Nacho mods are AMAZING
I haven't done a color yet but I started modding original Gameboys and love it. I can replace the screen with a much better one, install a USB C rechargeable battery, and wire in a new speaker, the only bit that requires soldering. I was very intimidated at first but it was all pretty easy (if you're allowed to watch a guide and study the process first lol). I highly encourage anyone considering it to have a go.

If you have an old DS Lite kicking around those speakers tend to be what people replace the GBC speaker with. They tend to die less often and can reach similar volume levels.
I stopped about 80% through the video and went out to buy a gameboy color. Great video!
