Her voice hero was Aretha - obviously - Aretha posessed the greatest voice in recording history. Janis said in an interview, "Aretha only has to sing one line, she doesn't have to go no higher than an A to a B - but she just milks you - I don't have that yet. " But Janis did have that gift - it's just soul, captivating - a haunting sound that moves the listener- true artistic expression of one's emotions and feelings. There are countless voices of perfection - high notes, range, prettiness.., the Houstons and Careys..,you name it, but none of them could move you like Janis. True soul was Janis and Aretha, virtually nobody emotes through song like they did, no matter how polished their voices were. Janis bore her tortured soul, she only passed us by for 27 years but she gave us her soul.
Thank you! Janis was like a bolt of lightning. She was only here for a moment but she changed the world forever! (Next time you get an itch for Janis, try Work Me Lord, Stockholm 1969! She slays it!)
Congrats for taking a listen to one of her great songs that somehow doesn't get many reactions. Others of hers that are seldom reviewed would be "Get It While You Can", "Codine", "Down on Me", "Try", "Kozmic Blues", "Move Over"
Also check out 1969 Live Stockholm "Summertime " & my personal favorite from that performance "Work Me Lord." Janis at her best. "Little Girl Blue" is perhaps my favorite of all time because you just want to hug her and tell her that she is loved and appreciated 💕.
When she starts singing, I cannot stop looking at her and I feel so connected to her. I love this performance!
She was the most soulful singer ever to step on a stage. Janis was soul.
