  • WAVLINK sent me the new AX1800 WiFi 6 Access Point to upgrade my WAVLINK AC1200 that I installed and reviewed 3 years ago. I do a full comparison analysis of the download and upload speeds at 100, 200, 300 feet and beyond for 4 different directions away from the Access Point.
    This Outdoor WiFi access point is perfect for a homestead, farm, ranch or any other large property where you may want wifi connectivity with a large coverage area.

    I have two installed on a 5 acre “farm” …. One configured as an access point connected to a Poe Router with WAN supplied by AT&T ADSL. The second set up as a repeater WDS bridge (NOT WISP). I have full bar coverage property wide for all my cameras and Apple Home Kit control system. It is flawless!

    In order to take advantage of the addition of WIFI 6 you will need a device that supports it. At the current time only a few phones do, so you will need to set up another ax1800 set as a client then do a wired ethernet connection at the far end to something like a laptop.

    Brilliant information. Thankyou! There are so many reviews of outdorr wifi systems out there that don't mention distances! Can I assume that the AX3000 will be even better?

    You're better off with a mesh like the eero, I bought this after watching this video but have to return it and get the eero 6+. My use case was to extend internet to a van build parked outside.

    Hey mate, I love all the effort you put in, but the testing you used via ookla is unfortunately flawed. The Ookla test is only testing the speed between your router and your internet service provider. Although you are seeing degradation the further you move away from the access point, this is due to the link speed you have between your phone and the Access point.
    You are better off recording via the wavlink console the decibel and link rate between the wavlink access point and your phone.
    Thanks for all the videos!

    You have one of the best videos for connecting the Wavlink. I also wanted it for access point by my pool but when I set it up it automatically downloaded my password. I didn’t’t get a chance to rename it or turn the WiFi button on. Can this be reset? Support was not helpful!

    Hi Jason @FromScratchRanch . Great video and as a result I bought this unit. Wondering if you (or anyone) can help. I set up an Access Point (very easy) and tested it using a 2m (6.5ft) Cat 6 cable from my router into the PoE converter and then another 2m (6.5ft) Cat 6 cable into the WiFi 6 AX1800. Amazing results (Wifi up speed = 400-450Mbps and down = 350-400mbps) when standing in the same room. Good test and even better wifi than from my router in the same room. I want to attach the unit to the corner of my house so it has a direct line of sight to my shed about 50m (164ft) from the fixing point.
    I then changed to a longer 45m (147ft) Cat 6 cable from the PoE into the AX1800, and still testing in the same room, get a significant reduction in speed to 80-100mbps down and 70-90mbps up. I tried with a shorter 25m (82ft) cable (both longer cables bought from trusted electrical store) into the AX1800 and got the same results as the longer 45m cable. I then changed back to the shorter 2m Cat 6 cable and boom, back to 400+ mbps. Any ideas why the longer cables aren't holding the router's speed which uses a fibre connection? I've Googled ethernet cables and the data transfer shouldn't downgrade until the cable exceeds 100m (328ft). Thanks in advance, Steve (New Zealand).

    Maybe I'm looking at things wrong. I would agree that 312 is 135% of 231, but the difference is 35% not 135%. It all depends on where the start point is. Comparing 312 to 231, 312 is 135% of 231, but the difference between the two is 81, thus the % difference is 35% greater (312 is more thatn 231) not 135% greater. I apologize at this seemingly trivial point, but words matter.

    Great video! I am going to eliminate the router from my system. I haven’t set it up yet, but am I go going to lose connectivity distance? I’m not sure I understood when you said it would perform better connected to the router versus the modem directly

    • @FromScratchRanch
      @FromScratchRanch  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Using it as a router would have the same result as hard wiring it to a router. I was referring to a comparison to using it as a repeater or extender where it connects via a WiFi signal and then repeats or amplifies that signal to extend it to further distances.

    Does it ever "freeze up" ? I have the AC1200 and once a week it locks up and I have to disconnect the Cat cable and power cycle the device to unlock it. It's pretty frustrating and the Tech support has been iffy at best. Would like to find a product that isn't so finicky.

    Question for anyone that can answer.
    I'm looking for a long range, outdoor, battery powered access point for a offline LAN security system for my property
    I currently run a LAN (offline/no internet) wifi security camera system at my warehouse using a AC wall plugin router. But my property is fairly large and I don't want to run power cables 100 yards outside
    I can use a external 12 volt battery as a power source for the access point, so the battery doesn't need to be contained in the access point itself. I prefer not to use a inverter if possible
    Will any of these WAVLINK access points do the job ?

    • @FromScratchRanch
      @FromScratchRanch  Před 7 měsíci +2

      No good. It will block the signal completely. In order to get the 360 coverage you will need to elevate the unit above the highest point of the building... or connect two of them (one on each side of the building). My barn is located near the corner of my property so I don't really need coverage behind it. I do get a signal for my camera at the entrance of my property which is behind but off to the side of my barn corner where I have the unit installed, but not directly behind it.
