Can we just acknowledge how talented Shirley Temple was? Amazing. She could sing, act, dance. One of her fellow actresses said that Shirley even knew about lighting.
If this had been the only performance Shirley Temple had done, it would still be amazing. She was essentially an add in between the characters of Alice Faye and Jack Haley. Yet she turned in a brilliant performance while maintaining her charm and individuality.
According to Shirley's own autobiography, she was accused of not being able to keep up when it came time for the three of them to record their taps in the recording room while watching themselves on the screen in front of them. Alice Faye and Jack Haley both became irritated with Shirley as they had to keep doing the number over and over in the recording room because according to the sound engineer one of the three was out of sync with the other three and not matching the taps to the already filmed version of the number. Both Alice Faye and Jack Haley felt it was Shirley who was out of sync. In fact, according to Shirley, Alice became rather acerbic with her. So what eventually happened was that each one of the three came into the sound room and recorded his or her taps separately and the three individual performances were mixed in together later for the final print of the film.
It was always kind of funny how he sings, “I love a military *hestitates*... nurse🎶 because in his mind he was like, I can’t say military man or they’ll think I’m gay. I’m not sure if that was kind of an intentional between the lines joke or not. Pretty ballsy though for the lyricists since that was in the 1930s.
She was older by then so of course she could do much better by since she’d had a lot more training by then and been around professionals for years so naturally she could compete with the best by her age! What a lame remark imo
She was about 8 (although I thought she may have been younger until I looked up her date of birth). She had great co ordination. Shirley seemed like a dear little girl.
Ms.Temple performs this number with Alice Faye and with..Jack Haley(Before he would go onto movie immortality as"Hickory Twicker"/"The Tin Man")in MGM's version of"The Wizard Of Oz".
By the way, the Tin Man's name is Nick Chopper. He and Hickory are not the same character. They were played by the same actor, yes, but they're not the same character.
Where and when did Alice Fay learn to tap? I don't think I ever saw her tap or even really dance before? She appears to be mostly an actress and a singer. Which is why I am even more impressed with her tapping in this clip.
@@terrier-9544 I knew Alice Faye and Shirley Temple sang the opening of this number, but I wondered if it was Faye who sang the main part of "Military Man."
And then there are the child "prodigies" of today. There are thousands of them and most are much ado about nothing, but Shirley Temple? There was only one in world history. She was that good, that unaffectedly cute, and that unique.
It's not exaggerated. Its the truth you old tools don't want to admit. She even admitted it herself, so why wouldn't you believe your beloved Shirley even when it came out of her mouth what was done to her??
@@BigTuna-xs8ic I read it, and you have exaggerated it, not to mention none of it negatively affected her as an adult BY HER OWN ADMISSION. Peddle your personal "facts" to more gullible idiots, you twit. Besides my comment had NOTHING, NOTHING, NOTHING to do with "abuse." Did I mention it had NOTHING to do with that subject ? 😂😎
There's an exerpt from her autobiography, "Child Star" where she details the issues they had rehearsing this number, her mother and Haley had an verbal altercation bc he felt Shirley couldn't keep up with he and Faye when it came time to dub their taps and Temple's mother felt it was Haley's fault . .it was crazy.
This is probably Shirley's best movie. This dance number is excellent.
Like the toy solider costumes.
Shirley. Wow he was Amazing!! How she stayed up with the adults. What a CHILD💕💓
More like the adults stayed up with her.
One of the finest tap dancing sequences. Shirley was such a professional!

Just shirley being able to do a long dance number like that is amazing

so that's what you got of this.
Sim… se pensarmos nessa época, era algo corajoso de se colocar em uma letra, as pessoas tinham nojo até de pensar em homens gays kk
Awesome tap. Love watching.
Shirley Temple is wonderful in this. But always cracked me up, a dance number complete with costumes for a radio program. LOL
Yes; for the studio audience, which is the way it actually worked.
Along those same lines, Edgar Bergen made a lot of money as a radio ventriloquist. It does boggle the mind, doesn't it?
Amazing! Love these movies.

You gotta have a very good memory to remember all those steps and the song. Kids these days can't pull that off at that age!
My mom can do this dance!

I think she did more dancing in her earlier films.

Small Shirley is so amazing 👍
Wow ❤️❤️
The beautiful woman at 1:18 is Gloria Stuart - most audiences today know her as "Old Rose" in James Cameron's Titanic.

relegated to being useless and stupid.
