    I unintentionally watched your demo on the mother channel first and then saw you had a new video so came here, and wow, that transition was brilliant. I actually chuckled a bit when the last thing I heard from one video was the first thing I heard in the next. The transition aside, this whole morning of videos was amazing. Thanks as always for sharing with us.

    Lovely. Thanks for sharing and for all the insights Christian.
    I did enjoy a lot that "but this is the beauty of writing music to picture". Tempo automations are extremely useful for this kind of situations, and as well to humanize more the musical expresivity of the midi notation. As long as there are not bpm sync sequences or similar things and the part we are writing would benefit of that kind of lyric element, if beside that would safe time and help the visual edition which we already had, then even better.
    Cheers!

    This was by far my favorite demo for a Spitfire product. When I saw the trailer I was instantly sold on the sound of the library and the distinct departure from past products. Really nice to see how you put the demo together. So much life to the snagged and mastered version. And like you said, it's how it makes you feel that matters. I make dozens of demos with just the script and conversation s with the director. It helps me home into their vision. Most times I barely use them once we sit together. It's then I'll watch the whole film a discuss the approach. A lot of times they'll want the demos for any last minute ideas.

    This is great to see your process Christian! I also find writing to picture a bit of a trap to be honest, it's difficult to remove oneself from the movement on screen and produce something genuinely intriguing. Having said that writing to picture also brings about some interesting leads to new musical material that I would not have thought have without seeing the picture.

  • @spaceflows
    @spaceflows Před 5 lety +3

    Great video! "Music To Picture" highlights a mildly frustrating scoring situation I'm currently in.
    I'm working on an animated series and the producers are insisting that I submit musical "sketches" based on only the audio of the show, no picture. I've finally received picture for the first episode and, surprise, my compositions developed from the sketches (developed in the dark), don't really work with the picture. I've tried to explain to the producers that it will be far more economical and practical for me to score to at least the rough picture, but they insist on getting these "sketches", only thing is, when they get them their notes are inevitably, "this could be fleshed out more", "the timing on this need to be faster", "this needs to be darker, lighter, more epic, quieter, etc". I've tried to explain to them that without being able to SEE what I'm scoring to (i.e. the shots, pacing, atmosphere) I'm kind of just throwing sh#% at a wall I don't know is there.
    Is this something that is common in scoring? Do producers/directors request scores to films/videos before these films/videos are even shot, or in my case, animated? I want to remain cordial and professional with these producers - don't want to come off like a diva - but I also don't want to work myself in circles!

    That microphone setup and trying to see the screens and play is quite absurd yes! US Presidents address their nation through an SM57 at some distance and then there are some great shotgun mics you could experiment with. Yes, that mic is not in the right location. You can turn it so you can see the monitor. 180 degrees will not work. As you talk with your hands you will hit the cable, if you even have enough room to play. Turn it 90 degrees, so you are not trying to look through the mic and suspension. 45 degrees or so if the suspension is on the weak side. And you will still have room below to talk like you are deaf. Been there...Nothing like the girl at the pub thinking you are deaf, because of all the hand talking with friends.

    Are your editors just brilliant? The promo trailer looked pretty in-time (did they use a temp?). It's a nightmare when you're scoring to picture and the editor hasn't thought about whether the picture/cuts/jumps are all in time or just happen randomly. So you, the composer, has to really put in a lot of effort to make it seems like it's all in time and perfect, when in reality, its a fucking mess. Cudos to your editors. EDIT - Just watched the rest of your video. Abusing tempos can really help and I guess that's the beauty of being a composer. Well done Christian! ;)

    The problem with writing to this picture is that you can clearly see what the strings are doing so it doesn't work so well for people that see one thing happening while they hear a totally different thing happening. I feel like the sounds need to match the visuals. Not just the timing of the pluck but also the right pitch for the string being plucked. The only freedom in my head is for the instruments not on screen...

      Hi Christian,
      It seems that you are hampered, somewhat, by your set up. Three camera angles, three monitors, the computer controls and the Doepfer....and you move about a bit!
      In a CZcams 'live broadcast' situation, there are a number of possibilities you could consider. One would be to use a fixed shotgun from above or another would be wearing a lavalier microphone.
      When I'm recording on location, I prefer to use a shotgun mic on a boom. You can fix the boom from above when the subject is seated. The microphone can be angled towards the subject and is high enough to be out of shot.
      As you tend to move about in your presentations, you may consider using a Lavalier to prevent off axis loss of signal. If you use omni-lavs, best to position them facing down to stop 'plosives'. I'm not a great fan of lavalier microphones, as you can easily introduce clothing noise.
      Alternatively, you may consider a head mounted microphone. they can look a bit 'naff', but they do the job!
      Other than that, you could always hire a boom op!
      Hope that these ideas deliver a solution for you.
      Cheers!
      Terry :-)

      I do a small video webcast and I hang a Sennheiser 416 shotgun over the talent's head, a few inches out front and up over his head. Sounds great! You could either hang it close enough that is in your picture or probably get away with going all the way out of frame with it. With the results I get with the shotgun (or a lav for that matter, though the shotgun has been slightly better sound for me), I always wondered why you have that huge mic rig right in front of you - can't imagine a need to block the screen like that. No need for a pop filter with a shotgun up and away. Anyhow, thanks for all the great videos, Christian!

    @AlistairMelville Před 4 lety

    Christian, I feel what you are getting at regarding 'love' . I wish it were so simple to understand but it is not. What I do know is that beautiful music does have the power to bring us human beings together. It can silence the noisy troubled mind for a little while and that can only be a positive thing. Rather than focusing our attention on the likes of trump, I feel we need to focus much more on why we live in a world that has become so fragmented and divided. As I said music can bring about a sense of unity if only for a little while but if we have not fully understood the very root of this fragmentation and division, this immense pain and suffering that humanity is now going through then I am afraid it will only continue. The root of all this division and sorrow is our 'thinking'. We are self-centred , ambitious, greedy and all the rest of it. Unless we look at these deep traits which we have all inherited from those who came before us (the 2 cells dividing) I am afraid that nothing deeply will change. Of what use is it in myself if one minute I am all loving for humanity and next minute I am deeply ambitious and fighting my way to the top. It is so hypocritical. Is it possible to live in this world and go about one's daily business in a quiet and sensitive way without getting caught up in the 'drama' of life? To have a mind and heart that is quiet and peaceful seems to be the most important thing in this world at the moment. Without that, we are lost sheep desperately trying to find a Sheppard. Why are we always looking outside ourselves for some 'authority' to tell us what to do? How to live our lives? Are not the 'sheppards' we seek also blind? Are not our so-called 'leaders' also blind? If there is to be love in this world then you and I must come together and put our own houses in order. First there must be inner peace only then can there be world peace. So few seem to understand this. They want to change the 'world' first instead of first changing themselves. I have a deep respect for what you say here but if it is mere opinion of what use is it? Our opinions change like the weather, they cannot be relied upon. But if you and I come together having put our opinions, our beliefs aside then we may discover something which is free of opinion and belief, something totally new, free, true. We have armoured ourselves with opinions, ideals, beliefs, concepts. We do not seem to want to let them go. We do not seem to want to be free of them. The great Krishnamurti called this 'conditioning'. Unless each one of us looks at this 'conditioning' and sees that their is actually no love in it at all then it will only continue to bring about further division and sorrow. Christian can you and I bring about a deep inward change in ourselves? A radical change in which this self-centredness that each one of us carries comes to an end? Unless that ends completely to talk about 'love' is rather meaningless if I may say. To go into all this requires great awareness of the whole problem. If we are only trying to sort out the various fragments, this also will be of very little use. This whole 'conditioning' must be seen in its entirety. Only then is there freedom from it. That very freedom is love. You are right the most important thing in this world is love. Without it we become just cold efficient 'music composers' who may gather many 'awards' but of what use are any of these if there is no love in one's heart. Most of us are also afraid. Fear destroys love. And yet most of us put up with this fear, why? Why have we accepted 'fear' into our lives? Unless we answer these questions fully, deeply, fear will also continue. Where there is any kind of fear love cannot flower. I wonder if we see any of this? We all need to come together and discuss this with affection and care for each other but who is willing? You follow? Who amongst us has the time? If we give our full energy, passion, care to this then beautiful music will naturally flower in all of us because the source of all music is love. It is love alone that makes all this happen. If it comes from a cunning mind, a 'conditioned' mind then it is not love.
