What Does My Animation Look Like in 60 FPS?

  • Hey there! It's been a while since I've uploaded anything on this channel. For the past six months, I've been pretty caught up with my day job and some outside projects/commissions- sorry about that!
    Good news: the next character is still on the way! She's my favorite Touhou character, and I'm excited to bring her to life. Thinking of doing a short sketch since we've got a bunch of characters now. Who could it be? You'll have to wait and see! c:
    Also, this year I'll try to find more time to make more animations! The most exciting part is that I've planned to do "Making Animation on Live Stream" sessions, so stay tuned! c:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    I know this is not a new video, sorry again. This video is to show how my animation will look in 60fps. It's pretty unconventional and breaks a lot of rules, principles in making keyframe animation and yeah, I DON'T LIKE IT of course, mainly because in the industry, we mostly use only 24fps in animation films.
    Please watch on 720p or above!
    AND I NEED TO WARN YOU: PLEASE DON'T LOOK AT THIS FOR TOO LONG, OR ELSE YOU'LL SEE ALL OF MY ANIMATION ON THIS CHANNEL LOOKS LIKE VERY LOW FPS AND STUTTERING!!

    It feels like whiplash for the eyes. I think the issue is that the timing was made with 24fps in mind. At 60FPS it's like the animation is constantly going from Zero to 100 and then slamming on the breaks. It's almost like those store display TVs that all have really high motion smoothing and frame interpolation turned on.

      It's a 3D animation, mate. There's no "made with 24fps in mind" here.
      You should give it a chance. It may seem weird at first if all you've watched in your life was TV and played on consoles, but once you get used to it, you won't go back.

    • @AceTheOcarinaMaker
      @AceTheOcarinaMaker Před 5 měsíci +19

      @@LecherousLizard It being 3D has nothing to do with it. That's like saying that Spider-verse or Last Wish should be 60FPS.
      I've seen action animations that do use 60FPS to capture wild camera movements and action scenes that are one continuous shot. It can look good, But those are animated almost like mo-cap where some movement is always going on and always flowing.
      This isn't doing that. It's a more cartoony TV-like animation where actions start and stop. The wind up in the motions isn't working for 60fps.
      Even something as constantly animated as Who Framed Roger Rabbit was only 24fps and you'll never see a moment where the animation takes a small pause and then resumes.
      And animation is almost never a constant frame rate. There is a reason some scenes are 1s and others are even as low as 4s. It's important to choose the right frame rate for a scene so you can better focus the audience's eyes on the details you want them to really take in.
      Close ups like this are usually on the lower end to focus more on the character's expressions. Make it too high and you focus more on the fluidity of the motion it's self more then what the character is expressing, which might be why it is so jerky. Because it's pausing a moment to let you take it in and then goes back to whiplashing your focus.
      Less is more in this particular case. At 24 you can take in every frame and moment of the expressions instead of wasting a ton of frames. Blink at the wrong time and the visual whiplash is even worse.
      Thinking 60 is just straight up better in all applications is ignoring even the basics of animation. This is no "used to TV and films" problem. I haven't watched TV in ages and spend more time in videogame cutscenes that are a smooth 60FPS or even 120FPS.
      I'm more used to 60 or higher in CG animation at this point and this just looks bad.

    • @LecherousLizard
      @LecherousLizard Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@AceTheOcarinaMaker Cope and seethe, then. Gotcha.
      Yes, there's a reason some scenes are 1s and some are 4s. It's the production cost. To save as much money as possible in every scene.
      Everything beyond that is a coping mechanism to explain it away.

    • @LecherousLizard
      @LecherousLizard Před 5 měsíci

      It's "uncanny", because you've conditioned yourself into thinking a slideshow that is 24FPS is "normal".

      @supercoolmaniajon265 Před 5 měsíci

      @@LecherousLizard Not really. I watch live action stuff too and it's totally fine. The CGI there is not quite there yet though.....
      Come to think of it, I've seen animes come close to 60fps sometimes. And I've seen movies with noticably higher framerates than others.

    • @LecherousLizard
      @LecherousLizard Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@supercoolmaniajon265 Most animes are actually made in 12 or even 8FPS (some go even lower, but going below 12 is already literally a slideshow). What you may have seen are anime produced in actual 24FPS.
      I can't think of a single anime that's been made in more than 24FPS.
      Well, technically, Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 had an opening scene made in 30FPS, but that's more of an exception.
      Oh, and that reminds me.
      While anime and movies are made with 24FPS as a basis, the broadcast standards in America, Japan and some other countries are using a 29.97FPS standard (as a result of TVs being made in 60Hz configurations), which means the frame rate of the media displayed has to be "stretched out" to match it, otherwise it'd appear slowed down.
      It's called 3:2 pulldown and means that half of the frames are interlaces with each other.
      Basically in a 24FPS video, two frames are displayed for 2 frames each and two frames are displayed for 3 frames each, but for half of a frame at the time with the other half of the frame being taken by the next frame of the video.
      It's quite a technical fuckery, but wikipedia page got a nice image to explain it visually.

    Just as a reminder to all, that animation at 24fps or even 12fps is good especially if the animation is made with the frame rate in mind, higher frame rates are superior for games, because of two reasons 1. Games typically create the animations on the fly, so smoother animations can be created without loosing impact, 2. Games need to react to your input and you need to react to thw game, so more frames means better communication of what is happening in the game and what you are trying to do.

    • @LecherousLizard
      @LecherousLizard Před 5 měsíci

      Clearly you've not watched an animation with action scenes where the "made with the framerate in mind" bullshit makes you unable to figure out what's even going on unless you rewatch the scene three times.
      The only valid point is that higher framerate in animation requires higher production costs. That's true in games too, fyi.

    Fun fact, our brains are quite literally conditioned to 24fps. It's the most visually appealing that captures that "cinematic" feeling. That's films/tv projects that are in 60fps lose their charm, quality, and overall feel when in 60fps. It's why I hate displays that interpolate a 24fps film to 30-60fps, because it's not meant to be that way and it takes away from what our brains think looks good.

    • @MinecraftLD10
      @MinecraftLD10 Před 6 měsíci

      The problem is keyframe tracking, you'd almost be animating on 2s with 60 fps for some elements, and 24 fps for other elements. Effectively at that point just build everything in 60 fps and adjust down to 30 / 24 fps.

    • @LecherousLizard
      @LecherousLizard Před 5 měsíci

      @@MinecraftLD10 Since most animations are made with 24 frames as a base, you don't want to be using 60 fps anyway, because it makes an odd frame having to be displayed for longer than the rest of frames. 48/72fps would be optimal.
