At least once a week at the range, usually more often than that, including competition training.
Wish I could more often; usually once or twice a month at the range and a host of dry-fire training @ home more regularly.
Dry fire at home with drills, range at least once a week indoor and outdoor (which I like better can move, shoot, multiple targets and a 50-yard bay all to myself. Classes from excellent ex military and LE I try for 4 year maybe more. Video had some great info.
You have to be in reasonable shape. You can't always use your gun, but if you carry a gun, you have to be able to defend it.

It's not even worth it. Most of them don't help you if you're charged and they drop you fast like what USCCA did countless times.

I learned the best lessons of carrying by simply putting in time carrying. I found out I actually enjoy carrying my Glock 19 rather than my smaller Sig P238 even with the same brand and style of holster.
Plus, simply carrying will educate you in the long run because you learn how the experience can be better and if you're familiar with your edc, you are much more calm and confident when you need it.
Anyway, great video with all the points touched on. Always food for thought. Keep it up good sir

I used to carry a Kahr CM9. Concealed like a dream, but I could not get a solid grip on it from the holster tucked IWB. I decided that wasn't a good thing. Moved on to a CZ P-01, about the same size as the G19, and have never regretted the change.
I agree, I was sketched at first carrying one in the chamber, but I’ve invested my time in researching on a good gun belt and a quality holster, and I trained through dry firing and range time, and carrying has gotten so much more comfortable for me! Cheers, be safe out there.

I think one time when I was qualifying for my ccw in CA, someone was shooting some kind of Kahr and at 7 yards the rounds were already KEYHOLING. You might have made the best decision in your life
loved the fact that you pointed out legal coverage, I know only a handful of people that conceal carry that have knowledge on the subject. when all is said and done, end of the day, not going to jail after you protected yourself is the cherry on top.
I've done a lot of stress shooting and lanes during my career in armed forces, the importance on decision making is often not taken into account.

Awesome video! Your channel inspired me to attempt to put up a few videos of my own, but geared towards beginner carriers since I’m pretty new myself. But I mostly put them up just for friends to watch. I’ve only been everyday carrying 2 years now and love taking classes and training! I know you have many many years experience, I’m simply a citizen. Not law enforcement or military or a veteran. So many of my friends who have never carried daily are asking me for tips and info because they want to start. I can only offer what I can offer with my limited time with EDC. But I direct all of them (including myself) to your channel and a couple others for great info. Keep up the good work!

I’ve been running my Blue Alpha belt for years and I love them.
Great stuff.
There's are always good tips. I had a few other advise as well when it comes to ccw and there's a few that I can list too which are very helpful to you or newer ones
1. Find a good holster like staded but make sure the holster covers the trigger guard very well
2. Always always make sure you have a light on your pistol
3. Carry a flashlight for edc off hand
4. Spare magazines side car or individual mag pouches are both are acceptable and personal preference
5. Stop spending money on holster find a good one within your budget
6. Don't throw your holster out or if you find it uncomfortable with in just a few hours give a week or so to get used to it
7. Do not do not shift or mover the holster in public go to the bathroom or a private area put in public
8. Stop changing holster position frequently go to the range flip flop around once you find the ones that's the fastest and more customed to you stick with it
9. Carry a round in the chamber, yes I understand the fear of it going off for new shooters go to the ranger and test out multiple draws the only way you are going to shoot yourself is you pullin5the trigger or something activates the safety of the firearm, clothing lint, and finger on the trigger when draw is mostly the case
10. Also go to training classes for ccw and self defense, just because you finished a beginners course doesn't mean that you are going to be an avid shooter, take an advanced classes and see where you lie, don't feel confident train more.
11. Train and always have fun on the range with your pals and a bad day on the range is always a good day on the range

You get a thumb up. But I disagree with #2. Perhaps mentioning that a light on your EDC could be a good idea, but I wouldn't be so firm as to make it an absolute. Some may not want the extra bulk/weight or may not want to pay the extra for a holster that will accommodate the light.
And #9. I would say keep wearing and keep practicing so that one day, the individual will feel comfortable enough to make that decision on their own.
But your list definitely has some great recommendations. Hope to see you on the range some day.
@@shanecabbage2187 I'm not saying to not carry a weapon light on yoyr pistol you should but you should also carry a edc style flashlight as well cause if you need a light you have a flashlight on hand.
And 9 was just a tip for new shooters also 9 applies to 6
Good points but I strongly disagree with the weapon light. Especially for those of us in hotter states where cc can be more challenging. I don’t need a bulky light that I’ll likely never need or use

Thank you. I have to admit, I need to refresh my decision making training. It's been so long that making an instant decision in a life threatening situation may not be as first nature as it should be. I train at the range so I'm confident in my firearm skills, marksmanship and speed at self defense distances, but I really need to know what I'm gonna do in advance in terms of what's safe, appropriate, prudent and legal. This video was a great reminder.

This is all good stuff you are talking about. I agree with everything you said. Not carrying with a round in the chamber is borderline insane. If your life is on the line you will present your pistol and hear a click not a bang. That will be the loudest sound you will ever hear, not the bang. Having a good gun belt is so important.
Belts and good holsters are overlook a lot.

Mike, I’ve watched if not all your videos then most of your videos and I’ve never walked away knowing more. I’ve bought several pistols based solely on your experience.
I’ve asked for guidance on your website a few times and you graciously answered each one. Thank you for that.
The suggestion is to always get trained. In my area quality instruction without the warrior ego is difficult to find. I’ve tried most locally.
Lastly, recently I stopped carrying. I’m 75 and in reasonably good shape. I shoot 3-5 days a week with a planned goal each shoot.
Being older and living in a blue state, I’d rather be shot dead than spend my aging years worrying about the injustice system here and if I’m going home again or not based on a prosecutor.
That’s a personal choice.
I appreciate the support. Hopefully one day you will feel comfortable carrying in your state again. Its sad that a person cannot protect themselves by gov overreach.

Great video. First, let me say I always carry my G19 with one in the chamber. However, if someone is not comfortable carrying with one in the chamber, I'd never discourage them from carrying. Yes, in your example about being in a ground fight/ struggle it's hard enough getting your gun out, never mind then having to rack your slide. I totally agree with you. I would argue that a regular individual also has a very good chance of shooting themself while trying to take their gun out in a ground fight. How did you get in a ground fight to begin with. Situational awareness is the first thing someone should be come proficient with. If I was in a ground fight, I would reach for my fixed blade and not my gun. The unfortunate reality is 99.9 percent of people will never be able to or want to train as much as you do. I love your videos, keep them coming.
I want everyone to carry as well, safely and with confidence.
An affordable holster that I have and like a lot is from Bravo Concealment, It's kydex and has adjustable retention and completely covers the trigger guard. I am able to carry my M&P compact very comfortably using this holster along with a belt from 511 tactical.
Bravo is solid.

i got a question for you that i have found no helpful videos on. What muzzle flash hider or other muzzle breaks, suppressor or any thing else better for use with night scopes or thermal scopes?
Well brakes and such will be much louder and concussive left and right. A good old birdcage and 3/4 prongers seems to do well. Suppressors also do well but there is always going to be a flash signature of sorts.

All great information. Amazing the choices and opinions people have regarding carry opinions. A guy I used to work with (a Marine of course) carried a Desert Eagle in 50 AE in an IWB holster. I told him if he had room for that the ladies would assume he had nothing else to offer. Another gal that was one of my customers would never train. Said she didn’t have time and when asked about it said I will just keep shooting till I finally hit them. I just told her you can’t miss fast enough to win a gunfight. She just looked confused.

Good points, all of them. For me, the answer to ongoing training is competitive shooting; IDPA, USPSA and the like. Not only do you work on speed and accuracy, but decision making as well. The best class and the best trainer can only impart skills. Those skills have to be practiced regularly and tested. IDPA uses "no shoot" targets as well as moving targets. Regular participation in competitive shooting keeps skills sharp and helps you improve over time.
That is a solid way to go for sure.

I’m glad you brought up training. I’ve trained jiu jitsu and mma for around 8 years. People don’t really like when I say “if you’re going to carry a gun you should probably know how to ground fight” because that usually means they actually have to train 😅.

Holster companies that I have had good results from are Harry's Holsters and Vedder Holsters. I find the Harry's a little more comfortable, but the pistol models they cover are more limited. Vedder has a MUCH broader range of pistols covered, and are almost as comfortable, what I wear for my normal EDC. As of now, both are sub *100, and I feel are very high value for the price.

This is why I asked you how much it would cost me to have you beat the crap out of me lol. I always want to learn and simulate situations I know I can’t win. When I’m in pain, I try to make that area hurt more so the next time it flares up it won’t be such a burden to deal with the pain. In the training I’ve had, the times I missed something and seen they had a clear shot and I’d be dead are what stick with me the most. My wife tells me all the time that I’m to hard on myself and that I underestimate my abilities but i just keep telling her, you won’t understand until you’ve lived it or have put your life on the line to help another. Even a complete idiot can get lucky if you think too much of yourself.
Its a great way to train just once to see how difficult it is.
I'll soar for some money I lived on the streets for 8 years bean in many fight on top of that I wrestled for over 12 years I've been in a bunch of dangerous situations I see where ur coming from

I did the crappy holster first but it came with my Springfield XD-e. It did its purpose just as that Springfield did. But once I got rid of my XD-e for my 229 Legion I had a Tier1 waiting for it. There is no reason to cheap out on a holster with how much we spend on everything else involved in the hobby. I will say one big thing I've learned is belt choice is important as well. My Kore nylon strap style belt was great at first but its too stiff all day at work. Once I got their leather version it was way more comfortable. I'm just not sure if it'll take the same beating as the nylon version. On pistol size carrying the 229 all winter as I got it on a black friday special. Has been comfertable and easily managable, Inside the waist band with a hoodie or baggy shirt with no printing. Or on the hip with a light jacket. But come summer time I might be looking at a 365 Legion. I can easily conceal, but it requires alot of effort on clothing choices. So yes consider your pistol size.

This is worth paying attention to and it makes it quite clear that carrying a weapon all day everyday is serious business and should be taken as such,because how much is involved in carry conceal isn’t for me.
My hats off to those that choose to do this but I find it to be much more of a hassle
Than it’s worth especially within the law and responsibility for every shard of a round that does damage outside of the scope of the confrontation your dealing with.
Not to mention one simple thing-you can be 100% in the right but using lethal force will never leave your mind and you’ll never be able to get that image out of your head.
Excellent video Mike. I just want to throw in a couple of value options for newbies to CC on a tight budget. I have had great luck with Bravo Concealment holsters, especially the IWB but you have to get the wing. For less than $40 and it checks all the blocks you mentioned. And 5.11 gear belts, even their cheap like $15 belt works well. I use both of these to CC back and forth to duty shift with a full size M&P with optic and TLR-1. For less than $60 its a hard to veat combo. Sorry, not trying to hijack your post, just trying to help those on toght budget

When I bought my first handgun 20 years ago, kydex was unheard of. Still got my uncle Mike's nylon holster but only use it on the range

You have the best videos! I just want to add one thing to the holsters part that I learned the hard way (money not pain) and that is a holster brand and or model may be amazing for one gun, but completely suck for one reason or another for a different gun.
That is very true.
Only thing I can think of that wasn’t mentioned is, make sure you have at least one extra mag on you while you carry. Shit happens and it’s easier to reload than it is to tap rack and find out it’s still jammed or something. Plus, mo bullets is always mo betta 😅
Instead of carrying an extra mag buy OEM mags, vet them with 200 FMJ and at least 2 mags of your defensive ammo while loading a full mag +1 as you carry - then no longer use those mags for the range so you do not wear the spring out.
Keep your gun clean, lubed, and maintained as should.
Always establish a proper grip on your gun so it becomes natural.
Then you do not need an extra mag because your gun will run as intended.
Those issues will alleviate almost any malfunction mag related that an extra would “solve” and if you’re carrying the high capacity gun you comfortably can carry - you’re good.
The fight is over when the first person runs out of ammo in their gun - there is no reloading. If you have to mag swap to clear a malfunction the attacker will either flee then or you’re dead. The only time citizens reload is after the fight to top off incase something else jumps off.
@@Timmy2Tough not all attacks are one on one or within arms reach. I will always carry an extra mag just for extra assholes. It’s not always bang, your dead, I win…… how many videos have you seen with cops reloading behind cover and then returning more fire to the bad guys? High stress situations don’t wait for you go through all the steps of proper grip and sight alignment and all that. Sometimes it an oh shit situation and you end up dumping your first mag from adrenaline. Mo ammo will always be mo better 👍🏻
It is definitely not easier to reload than to tap and rack the slide. It takes even the best shooters in the world an extra second or two to do a reload. And most people are not as skilled with reloads under stress as top level competitors. I suggest watching active self protection’s videos on whether or not it’s necessary for civilians to carry spare mags. He has the most common-sense and data-driven opinion on that topic, in my opinion.

Very good point on insurance vs an actual lawyer.
The insurance once use shisty language to fool people most of them are hucksters and snake oil salesmen.
You covered it... I would just overlap it with not only situational awareness but for EDC, awareness of what you are carrying in your strong hand, practice keeping it free, whether holding kids or car keys, etc.

The ratcheting type belts can suck if you are crawling around under a vehicle. They can get squished as you roll around and tighten themselves. Then you stand up and it's way too tight.
