      @@Monkebs45i dunno, i don't really think spookydood's counter evidence against knight!papyrus holds up to inspection.
      his first major point is that the knight's actions in the card kingdom don't seem like something papyrus would do, in particular the imprisonment of the other kings. but papyrus has a textual history with taking people captive - if you lose to him in undertale, he imprisons you rather than killing you outright. these are two out of three instances of people being taken as prisoners in these games, with the other one being when the spade king captures the party in chapter one, which seems to be a move borrowed directly from the knight.
      placing the spade king into power is a little odd, i'll admit, but papyrus has been shown to be overtrusting of malicious people in the no mercy route. i don't think it's totally out of character.
      and as for the idea that papyrus wouldn't want to cause the roaring, i don't actually buy that the knight is interested in the roaring at all. the only people who call the knight the "Roaring Knight" are queen and susie, both of whom don't really know much about the roaring at all.
      in my opinion, knight!papyrus would probably be reminiscent of the role he plays in the true pacifist ending of undertale. his actions would have been spurred on by some other villain, manipulating him into setting up an end of the world scenario. this would mirror him gathering all of the monsters at flowey's behest at the end of true pacifist.
      now. this (and most of the direct evidence for knight!papyrus) is all pretty spotty evidence, yes. but that also applies to any knight candidate at this point, and i think what really separates papyrus from all the others is his thematic connection to deltarune. loneliness and forgettability are core aspects of his character in undertale, and they're also themes baked into the very soul of deltarune. no other popular candidate can really claim that, aside from maybe the vessel.

    One small hang up with the way you explain your final theory - I tend to think that Gaster is the one who created the prophecy and told ralsei in the first place. Ralsei says the prophecy came from "time and space" and to my knowledge I think gaster's backstory is the only other place in UT/DR that time and space is mentioned.

    • @pedroba76
      @pedroba76 Před 10 měsíci +36

      Ralsei seems to know in some moments about the player existence or that he is in a game. So it's possible that Gaster told to him.
      The problem with this theory is that Spamton and Jevil seem to have talked with Gaster, and they both became insane. Ralsei would be the only exception.

    • @Patrick11nf
      @Patrick11nf Před 10 měsíci +9

      And with Gaster being associated with the devil/666 it fits thematically for him to want to banish the angel's heaven. The confusing part is, is the roaring connected to the angel's heaven? The dark fountains are called "holy" at times, but then there's what Jevil is saying which makes it sound like the roaring comes from "hell".
       @pedrobomal
      There's been some fun theories in the fandom regarding that. What personally intrigues me is if there is an in-universe explanation as to why castle town is named after the player by chapter 2. Ralsei is like the owner of the place so it could've been him, but at the same time the only one who should know of the players name is Gaster.

    • @TheSoph_
      @TheSoph_  Před 10 měsíci +54

      That's a good point. I suspected Gaster (assuming my theory is correct lol) tried the same routine on Ralsei that he used on Jevil and Spamton, but I assumed the prophecy came from Ralsei. But know that you pointed it out, I'm wondering how Ralsei know about this prophecy except from an outside source?

    • @CantusTropus
      @CantusTropus Před 10 měsíci +4

      @TheSoph1234 Part of me wants to say that Hometown itself is the Angel's Heaven, because it's a world where the Undertale cast can live peacefully, but that doesn't quite sit right with me because of how many of the fandom's desires are thwarted. You'd expect HT to have more fan wish fulfilment if that were the case. Still, that's assuming that the fans/player are the Angel, which is far from certain. Maybe the Angel just doesn't want certain characters (like Mettaton) to be happy? But this theory has the advantage of tying The Roaring and "banishing the AH" together naturally.
      As for Ralsei, it's possible that he might simply be a Stoic, clinging resolutely to his purpose even though he knows it's pointless.

      Hear me out. What if he is still the knight anyway. Being a scientist, this would be like an experiment, being the one to put it into action, but also introducing the conflict, just like a scientist. (It is unknown, but I find it very likely he did the soul transfer, adding the variable of player choice to either add a variable to or create the whole experiment from. In this vein, ralsei is a control, Kris is a variable, and Susie is set up to interact with the variable (why else was Kris chosen specifically?) Noelle is an output variable, being heavily influenced by the players choice, and berdly doesn't seem to fit smoothly into this, mabye he is one of the results. (Noelle and susie, which both interact with kris, also interact in meaningful ways with berdly. is a Remove outside influence by setting it in an experiment of your own design. He is essentially testing choice, or rather the choice of the player. (I will probably post my own comment about this.)

      the knight's motivations could potentially be bringing the roaring without the intention to destroy the world. in hometown, the angel is apparently a religious figure that people likely worship and look up to. but in the prophecy, the heroes intend to banish the "angel's heaven." there's a bit of a disconnect there. if the roaring and the angel's heaven are the same thing (or similar in the ways they're brought about), then maybe the knight is religious and believes bringing the roaring is a good thing. depending on who the knight is, there can be more motivations expanded on that idea, but i think this is a likely possibility

    The fact that the Gaster log says “photon reading negatives” is very, very, interesting. Does it mean that negative photons exist (darkness particles instead of light particles), or that there are no photons (no light)? Either way, I think Gaster found a dark world or created one in Undertale.

    • @theReincarnate

      From my research, photons are related to the electromagnetic spectrum, which includes visible light. Photons ARE light. Absolute darkness would be a state where there are zero photons, but not negative photons. "Negative photon count" makes no sense, it's like saying that you weigh -100 kg. Whatever Gaster was experimenting on must have somehow been "creating darkness", because it was somehow making the room darker than it would be if there was zero light in it. Back in Undertale this was inscrutable, but now we know that this matches the description of a Dark Fountain pretty closely.

    The problem I have with any Knight candidate, especially Gaster, is the fact that there's really nothing attempting to support it other than "it would be cool/fitting" or "we haven't seen them yet, so they're a valid candidate." Except for Kris, but I'm not gonna get into that right now.
    The "EGG in Wingdings" thing has always just been seen as a coincidence for me. There's just too many leaps that need to be taken in order to get there in my opinion. Unrelated, but I have a similar feeling to the typer value thing. Typer values are used to distinguish different speaking styles, not necessarily different characters. The most likely reason the typer value changes here is not because a different character is speaking, but because Gaster just wanted to change his speaking style to sound more threatening or something.
    Also, I've never really thought of the "Another Him" thing as evidence for there being another Gaster. To me, I think this is a reference to the fact that Gaster's Theme is named "him" in the sound files of Undertale. "Another Him" is not in reference to another Gaster, but rather another Gaster's Theme.
    Really, most theories involving Gaster that I've seen heavily overanalyzes things that are basically insignificant, and I can't exactly blame them for it, given how frustratingly little we know about him. I'm not saying Gaster CAN'T be the Knight, I just find it weird that some people say it's "CONFIRMED" because of these tiny tiny details.

I think from a writing perspective, making Gaster the knight is a no brainer because it'd be such a crowd pleaser. Imagine how cool it'd be if Gaster finally got some screentime!

    Absolutely crazy nutjob theory of mine, but what if Toriel is the Knight. I think the biggest hang up I have with most Knight theories are the location of the first dark fountain. From what I can tell so far, someone has to be physically in a location to make a fountain. And for me, that dismisses a large amount of candidates instantly. Not anyone can just walk into a school completely unnoticed. Theres a few other small pieces of evidence here and there, but for a motive I could imagine Toriel is doing it for a little escapism. She's recently divorced, one of her children is off at college, and the other has been acting differently as of this week. Perhaps she's just making these worlds not realizing that she could be bringing on the roaring. The biggest hole in the theory I've noticed myself is that the timing for Toriel to make the second fountain is extremely tight, as its implied the fountain was made while Berdly and Noelle were in the library, meaning she had to sprint over to the library after her conversation with Alphys and make the fountain. If this theory is correct, then I have a prediction for chapter 3. Toriel wont be a big part of the chapter, Undyne will. And Toriel will be missing, using the excuse of sleeping through the night for why she wasnt around.

    20:40 we actually have proof (or at least hints) beyond "it would be weird writing if they were driven insane by two different people". If you go back to Spamton's shop after the Neo fight, all the Addisons are lined up in the trash zone, paying respect to their old friend. They'll tell you how Spamton was on the phone with someone all the time, and once, an Addison found his phone when he must've left in the middle of a conversation without hanging up. They could still hear someone on the other end... but when they put the receiver to their ear, there was "nothing but garbage noise". That's the exact same wording the game uses when we use our cellphone in the dark world and hear the entry 17 noise. So it's definitely intending to imply that Spamton was talking to Gaster, too. TL;DR: Deltarune is an experiment being overseen and influenced by gaster, with each character and dark world being parts of the experiment.
    What if he is running an experiment, and not causing choas and despair for the sake of it? He is running the experiment, being the one to put it into action, but also introducing the conflict, just like a scientist. He is adding the variable of player choice to experiment on. In this vein,
    ralsei is a control, not really being affected by anyone in meaningful ways to the experiment (such as causing key events to happen (like going to dark worlds, fighting secret bosses, or fundamentally changing the characters personalities and actions.)
    Kris is a variable, being the vessel for that outside choice,
    Susie is set up to interact with the variable (why else was Kris chosen specifically? Being bullied by susie.) Susie makes a lot of her own choices, which makes for a perfect variable to interact with another and see how it changes it.
    Noelle is an output variable, being heavily influenced by the players choice, particularly during snowgrave. The whole existence of snowgrave also tells me the experiments are also testing how aware of the universe the player is.
    Berdly, however, doesn't seem to fit smoothly into this, mabye he is one of the results. (Noelle and susie, which both interact with kris, also interact in meaningful ways to the experiment with berdly, quite possibly being indirectly influenced by kris via the butterfly effect. (For example, Susie is directly influenced by kris during the first chapter when in the dark world, having a slight change of heart in the elevator. This leads to them going back the next day, picking up lancer, going to the cyber dark world, lancer freeing them, and susie taunting berdly about the puzzles in queens mansion, and berdly dropping his smart facade.)
    Jevil and spamton are both potential tests as well, being optional. Would the player make this choice? Each of them have other variables effecting that choice set up as well (you can see more clearly in spamton) but i'll leave that to interpretation.
    Kris is the variable, but not really. The player is. Kris is actively fighting against the experiment, even creating their own dark world to try and stop the tests. Think about it, the dark worlds become unstable when there are too many of them, and kris would probably rather have their own world then one designed specifically for a test. Kris knows about this test too, given chapter 1 and its ending. (IDK about you, but if suddenly my feet and hands and voice were moving without my consent, and I possibly had another voice in my head, I would burry my hand into my chest to get rid of it.) Kris knows were it is when player control halts. (If your arm went limp, you would suddenly be much more aware about it.) Of course, Kris is the only in game character aware, so the only one backlashing.
    The experimentor. The tree spots are the places where the experiment is being overseen, being between space. The egg is random and unstable, and I am not sure how it relates. One thing for sure, it is foreign. One thing for sure, characters are bing directly influenced to run the experiment. However, there does seem to be little hints of gaster being in direct conflict, or more likely, working with a higher force. Who? Toby. Let me explain. During the start you design your vessel, only to get discarded. Either Gaster thought a vessel would be necessary, but toby found a better solution, or the vessel was being designed as a failsafe. (Given kris's behavior, the latter seems likely.) We then see some text that is ludicrously out of character for the meticulous, calm, and collected scientist. We also see toby in the computer lab during chapter one, also causing the car crash in chapter 2, essentially helping the experiment remain as focused and contained as possible. This is a giant leap to make. I reconize that. However this makes just enough sense to me.
    No one specifically is out to cause the roaring, and while it is plausible, I don'tthink one specific entity is going to cause it. It's going to be a combination of gaster running the experiment, and kris fighting against it. (This would create a commentary on conflict, which I think Toby would be a fan of including.)
    Hear me out, gaster wants to know how players think, in order to either
    1. Understand the world better
    2. Cross the fourth wall
    3. Finish his studies on determination (he must've deducted that they come from the outside source known as the player)
    4. Understand the relationship between the player and characters
    5. Science for the sake of science
    6. Protect somthing, which is unclear at present.
    7. See what happens when somthing with a soul gets another soul, a soul with the determination required for player control. (Given this, we have four soul types. Monster souls, boss monster souls, human souls, and player souls. This also makes sense in undertale, as we always seem to be more determined than anything, despite fighting a goat flower with 6 human souls.)
    I think this experiment theory holds some weight. I'm very interested to see what you guys think.

    nice video! i love that you brought up that it's possible that there are multiple instances of gaster present in deltarune - the version of him from undertale, and the version of him native to deltarune.
    my one nitpick with your evidence is that i don't really think gaster has much of a reason to covet human souls anymore. he seems to have been removed from his home reality, so even if he did obtain it, i don't think he'd have a way to deliver it back to the underground.
    other than that, good video.

    • @captainacorn2088

  • @godslaughter
    @godslaughter Před 10 měsíci +8

    WAIT. WAIT WAIT WAIT, you just made me realise something. If your idea of Gaster wanting to do something with a "human soul" is true, it would make sense as to why Gaster could be trying to cause the roaring to create a connection (player with Kris through SOUL), but it's also very possible that Gaster is more of a server manager of the entire game, especially since the original demo was called SURVEY. I don't know what to make of it yet, there's still not enough information due to only two chapters being out, but I am totally considering a potential very fourth-wall breaking narrative in which Gaster is a character managing the application "DELTARUNE" while Toby himself has everything planned out and is the narrator, along with the Annoying Dog.
    Unrelated* but I'm also thinking of the possibility that DR characters aren't UT characters, but vice versa, it's just that due to the happenings in the timeline and the release dates of either of the games made almost all of us consider that UT is the OG game while DR is the secondary game, even though I think Toby has been working on the plot of DR for much longer? Almost makes me think UT might be a prototype, especially since it's existed for so long and UT has had foreshadowing elements hinting at what the future will bring, but that's something Toby knows and I can just speculate.
    *the "unrelated" part immediately made me remember it's an anagram for both "undertale" and "delta rune"; not important but it made me chuckle

      The "Server Manager" idea is supported by the alternate save/load screen you get in chapter 1 if you access it before beating the chapter. That features a very simple green and black "Old computer looking" menu where the voice from the Goner Maker section describes the save/load/copy/delete actions in ominous language.

    This is very well put together! I'm also really glad that you just go with the fact that the intro character is just straight up Gaster, or a piece of him. So many people lately have been wringing their hands saying that "technically" we don't know for sure who that is. And like, sure that is true. But also he uses the Another Him, he talks like Gaater, and has all these associations with 6. It's Gaster in some form.
    I personally like to think that Gaster is some sort of deity/puppet master over all of this. Hell, you can go deeper into the chess symbolism in this game and say that Gaster is playing chess with all the characters acting as the pieces, including the Knight.
    Plus, if chess theory holds up then we would be fighting the Knight in chapter five, and Gaster definitely feels like endgame stuff. Chapters 5 and 6 material.
    For my thoughts on the knight, i could just go with the easy answer and say Father Alvin. He's definitely the most popular choice these days, but what's the fun in that. My completely out there theory that I'll be so happy if I'm right is Mad Mew Mew. Or maybe she is Mad Dummy in DR rn. Or maybe something else if she doesn't even have the dummy. Idk i just think she's neat

    I was replaying Deltarune to prepare a new save file, and I took some time to think about some words said in Chapter 1. The four kings locked Jevil, but only then does the Knight appear. However, Jevil talks about the Knight when defeated. Either the one he met was the Knight, or the one he met told him about the Knight; which then means that someone either knows of the events that are about to happen, or The Knight just existed for a long time...
    Honestly, it is still mind blowing that we are about to get three chapters at the same time, that is going to be too much information

    After all, being shattered 9/10 times also means your dead and it would make more sense if the Gaster we all know is actually the deltarune counterpart now aware that both worlds are games is bouncing between the two doing stuff in secret... perhaps even revieviving his counterparts in certain timelines, that would explain the inconsistency too, as the two worlds uave separate timelines, frisk could cross the underground beat whatever ending they were going for and reset in the time it takes Kris to get to the card castle, this gives DR Gaster time to go to the world in some timelines, leave and not be seen in the next...

Exactly, a teacher. Now i wanna point out real quick that it doesn't work the same on anyone else we saw like Napstablook but those characters didn't really wanted a different job. Now back to the Papyrus point, he like Toriel wanted a certain job (i guess you can call it a job) and it being a royal guard wich king's guards are knights so if it works for Papyrus the same way it did to Tori, that means he would be the KNIGHT!!!

    It’s not Kris Ralsei or Susie because Chaos King and Queen don’t recognize them as the knight. Plus Ralsei’s whole deal is sealing fountains.

      There's no evidence supporting that either of them saw the Knight, especially when it comes to Queen.

      That’s true. The knight has never shown evidence of speaking to King or Queen. I don’t know how they would know about the knight, but generally speaking, you’re right. Nice observation!

      A lot of people seem to neglect that there are actually two versions of Kris. Player-controlled Kris and Heartless Kris.
      The fact that the monsters didn't recognize the knight doesn't have to be applied on the physical level. You also can't recognize a person when they mentally show a different personality (which is obviously the case with Heartless Kris).
      Heartless Kris is the knight!

    Dumb thought, but what if papyrus is just a lost follower posing as the gaster of deltarune?

    If you intend to run through other Knight candidates, then are you familiar with the post "Reappraising Father Alvin"? Full disclosure: I wrote it, so my endorsement is biased, but Spookydood gave it a shout-out as a source on Alvin Knight theorycrafting.

    20:33 Gaster Deltarune is the knight and Gaster Undertale is the strange someone driving people insane maybe? Just another wild speculation before I actually watch the conclusion.

    to me, its very obvious that gaster is the one behind jevil and spamton, but i dont think he is the knight.

    So yesterday I was looking for a piece from one of my old jewelry making sets from when I was younger, and I thought to myself "it's like the pieces have been scattered across time and space!" Then it occurred to me that maybe if Gaster is a Darkner, his Light World counterpart is one of those craft sets, or maybe a Lego set where all the pieces got scattered around or something. idk if this makes sense but just something I was thinking about.

    Maybe Gaster invented the dark world as a way to test determination. One thing about the dark world we don't know about is how/ what the darkness that makes the world is. It isn't your average darkness. It is.... advanced darkness. All joking aside, the darkness could be a way of taking determination and using it to reshape the world. But the people that do have trauma/ darkness in their souls that taint this power. When kris opened his, light poured out like the light of his soul that then became dark, with shadow pouring like blood pouring from a wound, darkness from a wounded soul. The dark worlds, in a way, are reflections of the people that enter them after all, resonating with specific characters to help them get over that trauma. Like with chapter 1 and susie's aggression problems and chapter 2 with noelle and her troubles (specifically indicated by her reliance of the internet as shown in the spampton sweapstakes). Likely we might see Kris/ toriel's troubles show in chapter 3
    For the roaring knight...Dess and Gaster are likely trapped in the dark world with no way to escape. Maybe the roaring knight and us, the player, were actually contacted by gaster in a realm between the light and dark world, to find a way to save those lost to the darkness with no way out. That would give motivation for common suspects like papyrus and father alvin. They are nice monsters and generally non violent or malicious. The reasoning for making more dark worlds, then, is then to go look for dess and gaster and maybe help other lightners overcome their struggles too. As they are lightners, they can make dark fountains to enter dark worlds, but without a human soul, they cannot close the fountains. Thus, they would risk causing the roaring by making too many fountains while searching. Which I personally think would happen by accident, making it more tragic and emotional in the long run.
