Scotty I have to give you a correction my friend. The primary driving force of gas prices isn't supply or demand. It's regulation and taxation.

It's better to accept what you have and improve at it despite it being unpleasant than to chase dreams and kill the only thing you like by depending on it for survival. Then, it stops being a hobby and stops being enjoyable. Ask any mechanic if they are happy to work on their own car after finishing a shift, and you'll know. This chasing dreams mindset part of why Gen X/Gen Z is such a mess. Look at dirty jobs for a proper perspective
I remember during the gas wars in 1973,..
I paid 17 cents a gallon. Age 67.
Yep, me too. I was 21 in 1973 and I could fill my Mach 1 on $5 worth of gas. My dad said if gas keeps going up, we're gonna have to ride bicycles!
Boy, I remember that, $5 went to $10 to fill the tank on my 68 chevelle. What made it worse was putting a holley double pump carb on. The 396 went from 13mpg to 8mpg. Went great tho. 😂❤😂
You seem to be doing pretty well for yourself being 67 back in 1973 😂
@@jerryumfress9030I worked at a gas station in 1973 during the gas shortage and the pump price was 49.9 cents for regular gas. We were high because we were on the highway, but most gas stations were in the 30 plus cents range and during the rationing there were plenty of people willing to pay $1 a gallon that was accomplished by doubling the pump price.😊
Exactly.
Terry’s son here, can’t say as I’ve noticed the gas prices coming down, but I’ve noticed the prices of new and used vehicles, skyrocketing, and the number of vehicles being sold plummeting.
This time of year is peak price for vehicles. Though they're less than they were last year or the year before.
@@EvilMonkey7818 I agree. I have a 13" Sentra with around 150K and apparently the value on that is like $5,500 which is about 5,000 more than what I thought it would be worth after the first transmission got replaced.
I know one thing, it's worth more to me as a car than 5,000 worthless green rectangles.
@@EvilMonkey7818Bout the same year round
Used car prices should be coming down by the end of 2024. New car prices may fall too as inventory piles up at dealerships. I was planning to look at new Tacoma's, but they want way too much for them. Like your dad, I am not a fan of turbos. My 2002 Tacoma TRD Double Cab V6 is in great shape with only 78,000 miles, so I will probably keep it for a few more years. CarMax offered me $16,000 for it about a year ago. That was almost too good to pass up.
Then the plan is look for a used pre turbo Tacoma V6 like you have.
The elevated used vehicle price has been great for trade in though. Traded in my 11 yr old Camry hybrid for $10500 after putting on 60K miles (87K odo) and I bought it used 6 years ago for $12500. Insane how in 6 years, 60K miles the vehicle only lost $2K in value
Scotty, I bought a 2002 1st gen Prius for $1,700 in 2018.
It had 200,000 miles. Its been our daily driver for 6 years now and it has never broke down. I take that back. One wheel bearing.
How many miles now ? Jeeez!
The 2nd gen Prius is also bulletproof. But many Prius owners don't keep track of maintenance. They interpret reduced maintainence to mean - almost no maintenance required. Check for engine sludge before buying.
1st gen is good, but 2nd gen is better: *electric AC compressor!*
A friend of mine had a 2002 Prius until 2-3 years ago. It ran great until some lowlife took the catalytic converter. The friend declined having it repaired and just sold it off for $250 to some car reclamation company. A total waste.
you are right Scotty. When I worked in the trucking industry. they began tacking on fuel surcharges to the cost of delivery during Desert Storm. I retired in 2018 and the surcharge was still in place. I fill up at 1/2 tank now just to keep it under $40 dollars My first fill-up this year (1/21/24) I paid $2.86 a gallon . My last fill-up on 5/25/24 was $.4.14, its at $3.96 now...I expect a oil refinery fire or seasonal maintenance shut down to get it to $5.00 by July 4th.....

What they tell us is my state is dealers (gas stations) have to sell the gas they paid max dollars for that's in their underground tanks for max retail or lose money until it's gone. Yet when crude goes up in price they instantly raise prices for the cheaper gas already bought. Go figure....
is just an excuse to shut people up. the real reason is demand, if the demand does not go away even with higher prices they will not lower them. The only reason why anybody in the economy lowers prices is when nobody is buying your stuff. Scotty was 100% correct on that
Maybe you missed it, but Scott Sheffield was found to be colluding with OPEC to keep gas prices high, resulting in an average increase of over $1000 per person in the US.
“When corporate executives’ words or actions reveal…a belief that they can collude, we should generally believe them,” FTC Chair Lena Kahn said in announcing the commission’s decision.
They have the same excuse here in the UK. I watch the oil prices come down, but it takes weeks for fuel stations to pass on the savings. Then, almost instantly whack them up at the pump the second oil goes up again. Rip-off here too!
Dishonesty is their only policy......
I’m figuring that the filling stations are in business to turn a profit in order to stay in business.
They don’t make all that much on a gallon, the profit margin is small. Soooo they have to raise prices quickly and lower slowly…
Sounds like the Check Engine Light is on again with Scotty's voice
Oof
Grab the good scan tool. Rest the code.
I thought he got a new mic haha
Since working from home, I haven't filled my tank much. My tank was down to 1/4 and when the prices went down this past week, I filled it up multiple cars. I think more and more people are selling their cars. The massive tech layoffs the past two years made people sell their expensive cars. The rise in remote jobs should be driving down gasoline demands.
Be sure to keep at least half your gas tank full else you may ruin your fuel pump if it’s inside the gas tank.
Remote work was at its peak in 2020. Many companies are doing RTO. Maybe you haven’t noticed that traffic is back. Hybrid is alive and well.
Even if the price of oil goes down, this doesn't affect the costs of refining, distribution, wages, etc.
I have a 2014 Cadillac ELR. It is a PHEV. It's essentially a first gen chevy volt, but much more comfortable and pretty. I can make it to and from work solely on electric range. It's great!
Here in the UK the gas price today is £1.50 a litre! That's insane.
It's all taxes! Why didn't the oil in the North Sea make your gas cheaper? Because your country is 'ripping you off"!
OPEC has been cutting back on crude production and said they will continue to do so. OPEC needs crude at $80 to $90 per barrel to make it cost effective for them. U.S. consumer demand for gas has dropped 2%, hence crude demand dropped. This is why OPEC is cutting production. Prices will drop in the near term, but then jump again.
It will just incentives people to buy hybrids & EVs.
Breakeven price in the USA is $38 a barrel....$10 a barrel in Saudi Arabia.
Avg cost if refining a barrel of oil is $3 - 5 dollars a barrel fir existing wells.

Gas prices ALWAYS lag behind oil prices whichever way it's going. It's going to come down further.
i beg to differ. Gas prices shoot up on the mere rumor of higher oil prices or a refinery disruption. Gas prices lag oil prices on the way down, though.

Regardless of whether or not 6% decrease makes only a small difference. I still find that kind of hard to believe because Friday after getting my truck from the shop, I took a ride during the day before my evening shift at work. During that time, I was charged $4/gallon which resulted as probably the biggest sum ever put out towards buying fuel for any vehicle I had in my possession. While getting the tank filled, the attendant told me one of his family members who lives in California said fuel prices for that state are $9/gallon. I just briefly looked at the fuel price comparison for different states. The result of that discovery is South Carolina has got fuel prices at least a little cheaper compared to my state of NJ.
I don't worry about gas prices anymore. I'm keeping my ICE vehicles for as long as possible.
Me too
Just wait until a real President takes office. Those trumped up charges won't stick. Pun intended.
California govenor wants per mile tax because he said less people are buying gas and less tax to state because of EVs.

Around $2.80 at Sam’s in Knoxville Tennessee. Lowest prices on Lovell Rd at Pilot and Weigel’s as well. At Pilot, they’re giving ten cent off all summer with membership. Sam’s leads the way.
Here in New York, gas prices change wildly depending on which county you’re in.
Dear Joenissan, due to events that transpired on May 30th, 2024, I have made the difficult decision not to support or do business from within the state of New York and especially New York City in any capacity. I do not take this decision lightly. This is poised to be a lifetime, self-imposed prohibition although I am willing to reconsider my decision depending on what happens with national events on November 5th, 2024, and on January 20th, 2025. Please do not take this personally as it is merely a personal and business decision. Thanks, RussellC.
Even though oil prices have dropped about 35% from their peak last year, gasoline prices at the pump haven't seen a significant decline. This is because OPEC+ has implemented production cuts to keep prices high, reducing the overall supply of oil. Rising global demand for oil also supports higher prices, even as supply increases. U.S. shale production has ramped up but isn't enough to counteract the effects of OPEC+ cuts completely. Refining, transportation, and distribution costs remain stable and don't decrease proportionally with crude oil prices. Taxes and regulatory fees on gasoline are fixed costs that further keep prices from dropping significantly. Additionally, regional variations in taxes and local supply conditions affect gasoline prices. Therefore, despite a significant drop in crude oil prices, structural factors in the market keep gasoline prices relatively high.
Democrats won't let any refineries to be built. A last one built was in the 70s

@@NOMUMFEL It's also pressure on the U.S.'s MidEast/Israel foreign policy from the Saudis and pressure from Russia to undo the sanctions and get the U.S. and NATO to back off supporting Ukraine. Oil companies do their part to keep gas prices high, and if the rest of the world will pay more for American gasoline than American consumers, U.S. oil companies will export it to whoever pays the most for it. Oil companies are international entities and the oil market is international. It's Economics 101 plus International Trade 101 plus U.S. domestic politics plus commerce as a substitute for warfare.

Supply and demand is always relevant, but they do have to pay someone to truck the gas around. That price doesn't go up and down, just up. They have to pay people to work at the gas station. The station has to pay rent and that doesn't go down. Economics can be complex. It's not always as simple as supply and demand.

Rumor over here in California is
Refineries are max out,old outdated with no new Refineries planned. Also, even though diesel fuel is less cost to make diesel fuel is made in less quantity than gasoline thus labeled a commodity that merits higher price at the pump😆😆😆

An even bigger scam is the price of motor oil. Most people don't realize that a 42 gallon barrel of oil contains 168 quarts of oil. So even if a barrel costs $80 there should be profit in selling motor oil at $1 a quart. So why is the oil on the shelves minimum $4/quart with most priced at 6-7 dollars? There's just not that much processing to make motor oil from crude oil.

Hi Scotty, I recently acquired a 1998 Buick Riviera with the supercharged 3.8 liter V6. I like it very well, and it's in good condition with no rust, which is rare in Southern Ohio. It calls for premium fuel, so that's what I use even though it's $1 more per gallon at my local station. From previous experience, I know it will get better mileage with the premium, but I haven't had it long enough to check the actual difference. I use the same fuel from the same pump when I fill up to eliminate any discrepancies I may have concerning the fuel source. I plan to go through the preventive maintenance I think it needs, and I'll check the mileage afterward. My question is obvious though, what are the pros and cons of (Shell) regular vs. premium, and is there a significant detriment to using the $1 per gallon cheaper fuel in this vehicle and many others? Thanks for all you do to support your community. TJ Meyer

There’s no such thing as fossil fuel Fossils have only been found as low as 16,000 feet. We drill for oil between 26,000 and 32,000 feet deep! We need to drop the words “fossil fuel” ⛽️ they keep telling us we have 10,000 new oil drilling leases, but a lease is worthless without a permit. Supply is not the issue, price gouging is.
Good narrative on the gas price fiasco, Scotty.
You are correct. It has been horrible in California but the prices have dropped about 50 cents in the last few weeks but its still outrageously over priced. I remember how low they were when I first started driving it was 59 cents a gallon. Minimum wages were $2.65 an hour. So, you could buy 4 gallons of gas for the minimum wage. Currently the minimum wage is $16. 00 an hour but gas has be around $5.00 dollars a gallon. That means that you can only a little over 3 gallons. So, gas prices are higher.

Its sold as a commodity like gold and copper. Opec contols the price of oil.
@@bruceschmidt3539 kind of true, but the owner can sell for a lower price in the usa if its local oil! But why should they? They know they got us by the balls!
They will just cut production to drive up prices. It’s a non parsable product. It lasts forever when not burned or used. I had a 94 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible 3.4 dual overhead cam. Had almost 400,000 miles before it was stolen. Drove great it was front wheel drive
Regular is $9AUD a.gallon here in Australia
Taxes on fuel here are so high we hardly notice changes in prices before tax. Next year: €2.40/litre for regular. Taxes go up with €0.23/liter.
OPEC just announced that they will pump more oil.🤔

Taxes and prices are hooked to the electrical equivalent of a diode or the fluid equivalent of a check valve. They only go up.
