  • Three Day Adirondack High Peaks Winter Camping Trip in the Dix Range with summits of Macomb, South Dix, Grace & Hough. This trip brings me 4 closer to my ADK 46er.
We stayed at the Lillian Brook Lean-To. On the first day we attempted to bushwhack to the West Inlet en route to Elk Pass and summits of Blake and Colvin.
On the second day, we summited Macomb, South Dix, Grace and Hough. The skies were clear and the wind was minimal lending to spectacular views.

Very well done, I love the Dix Range. Looking at the map, that looks like a pretty neat idea for hitting the Colvin Range from Lillian Brook. Given the winter bushwhack though, you'd probably have to carry overnight gear and make that a two-day push. Breaking trail though is exhausting and it was good that you made the hard turn around time. You probably wouldn't have found your knife in the dark.

Thanks Dan, we had such clear days and spectacular views. I think the Bushwhack could be done in two days. We had hoped that the areas east and west of the hill was a bit more open than it was. The maps show them as marshy lands. We were hoping it was a frozen marsh with stands of trees spread out. Instead, it was thick and full of blowdown. It was fun navigating and trying. It was all about the adventure.

When you said you planned to winter bushwhack from Lillian to Colvin and back in a day I thought you guys were insane! Was certainly worth a try. A great learning experience for us viewers as well. Glad you guys made it back to camp safe.Congrats on bagging the Dix range in winter in a single push. That is no easy feat by any means. Thanks for uploading.

I appreciate you watching the video, glad you liked it. We had high hopes, but realistic expectations. Thanks for the congrats, this trip made it 33 of 46 for me. Tom is about the same away from his winter 46er.

great! I recently did some of the Dix range and I was wondering how this could be done during winter...Mostly some of the Beck-Horn trail which is Terribly steep.

Paddle & Hike this was a cool multi-day trip. We did Dix in the winter as a day hike from Round Pond. There were some guys that came up the Macomb slide, but said it was too steep to descend that way.

Loved seeing how calm and collected you were with the lost snow shoe. If I were in a situation like that, it would have been hard to suppress the panicked feeling. Two questions, I take it fires are okay in the high peaks during the winter? How about are bear cannisters still recommended or are the bears hibernating?

Fires are not allowed in the Central Region High Peaks (formally the Eastern Zone). The Outer High Peaks Zone (formerly the Western Zone) allows fires. The zones are in transition through 2020 (www.adk.org/changes-to-high-peaks-regulations-coming-in-2020/). Bear canisters are needed in all High Peaks zones May 1 to October 31. Not sure what we would have done if the snowshoe was lost. It would have been a tough bushwhack back. Thanks for watching.

What’s in your pack? I couldn’t find a full gear breakdown in your back catalogue. Could you do a breakdown or post a link to a Lighterpack (or similar)? Thanks for the video, looks like a good trip!
