    As a Filipino, I think the third story is a case of an Urban Legend manifesting itself into reality. The first two incidents (which I heard started off as just men arguing over who sang it better) may just be purely seperate coincidences but as people continue to spread the rumors "don't sing that song because you'll die", people who were either aware or unaware of it still continue to sing it because it's such a popular song and karaoke (just like what Mr. Ballen said) is a huge part of our culture.
    However, the reality is these karaoke bars (beer house) are mostly frequented by people who are down on their luck, who resort to alcohol and prostitution to forget their problems, and we all know such people when mixed with alcohol and hubris, can definitely turn violent when given the slightest of reasons.
    Thus, those who dared to sing the song inspite of its growing infamy are then tempting the devil and, unfortunately, some get their chance encounter with him via these intoxicated people inside karaoke bars who've most likely heard the stories behind this song and just kill the singer either during or after singing the song.
    This is why noone dares to sing this song in the PH anymore, even the good ones don't dare touch it because we know we might be unfortunate enough to be in close proximity with a crazy person who'd pull the trigger just for the sake of keeping the urban legend alive.

    The story of Alan is horrifying. I've worked in a factory that does large scale manufacturing of circuit boards for various applications and we used big furnaces to slow cool hundreds of parts at a time and even in that situation the systems had monitoring systems inside the rooms including weight distribution failsafe's so if anything became unstable and fell the machine would just turn off. It was sensitive enough that a person walking across the floor after the operation had started would have stopped the process. This is why failsafe implementation is obscenly important, even though the furnaces would only reach about 200 degrees in my situation that would still be enough to kill a person and it had precautions, yet a massive 600 degree furnace had none? He should have been charged with far more then he was.

      I wished there were failsafe's on all machines.. Injection molding of huge items like plastic dumpster lids is a problem. My dad worked most of his life at a place that does injection molding. They had to stop the machine from the control unit if something went wrong or someone was in the machine. Having worked there myself, it's hard to hear someone that is 5 foot a way because of the loud machines.. Much less someone in a loud machine. My dad was always fixing the machines and changing the molds. So I always had a constant fear of him being stuck in the machines.

He got stuck, called out for his brother. The brother couldn't get him loose, so he called for help. The stuck brother hung upside down in that part of the cave for almost two days while the rescuers tried getting him out, to no avail. He died right there, and nobody was ever able to get him out. I even have a cousin who got murdered after singing that song, he has a good voice so he didn't butcher the song. It was said that perhaps the killer got mad because my cousin sang it better than him. There must be something about the message of the song that is so emotional and that a lot of people consider it so close to their heart so they don't want to hear people ruining it or hear other people outshining them with this song. We actually are not allowed to sing this song in any of our karaoke parties or any family gatherings lol! It has become kind of an urban legend.

      @@jeffjeannette9364 The Philippine karaoke pictures that you showed is middle class to upper class. You said that the victim was dumpster diving and selling scraps. The karaoke places where they usually frequent, given limited budget, are usually shady ones in shady areas. Where trouble usually brews.
      Long ago, I passed by one of these and it was scary and dark. (On the way to the train.) Also, someone was singing really badly. That was when I realized why those random news that I see, make sense.
      So everyone is usually drunk already in a lower bracket karaoke bar (they actually call it "beer haus"), then everyone just sings at the top of their lungs where people passing by on the streets can hear. The one I passed by long ago, sounded like a braying donkey. It was really grating to the ears and super loud. (Most of these lower bracket beer houses have open fronts. So imagine a cafe without doors.
      Then there's also news of people who would not give up the microphone and also, since they are drunk, tempers flare.
      This can also happen in many areas where people keep singing until way past midnight even until morning. Basically there really were no limits even if people sing karaoke in their houses for days and everyone can hear or if some neighbors complain (but the cycle just repeats). Until the president in 2016 placed a curfew that karaokes and merry making in streets should stop by 10pm.
      So imagine karaoke everywhere and most of the Philippines are below poverty and middle class. So the noises that go on without limit, it does cause a lot of anger overtime especially when you are stuck with neighbor's who do it for many years.
      I don't know if karaoke without time limits anywhere and everywhere still happens there as of 2023 but if you were able to visit before 2016, most people would know why and understand.

    As someone from the Philippines, the moment you mentioned KARAOKE (coupled with the words from the video description), I automatically knew it's about the "My Way" phenomenon. It's no secret that Filipinos love to sing, hence, the success of karaoke. People here can turn violent in the karaoke usually for these 4 reasons: (1) singing off-key/out of tune, (2) singing the same song for hours on repeat, (3) hogging the microphone, and (4) fighting over who gets to sing the song. There was one incident close to where I'm at a good few years ago where 2 people started fighting with knives apparently because of this 4th reason; they also called their friends for 'back-up' a few minutes later (a few people brought with them strips of wood that we call 'dos por dos'). It was a riot. IIRC, it was fortunate no one died in that incident because a local police station was nearby and the police responded quickly, but there were definitely injuries because I remember seeing some blood. I don't remember that incident making the news, but it was totally bonkers. It was in broad daylight too (it was in the afternoon) and I reckon they were a bit drunk.
    But these incidents of violence mostly happen when partnered with inebriation. When people are sober, tensions can get de-escalated or won't even rise at all. But with "My Way", people can get extremely violent even when sober. It is odd that this seems to happen only with "My Way" though; tensions are so much lower when it's a non-"My Way" song. Just sing it in private and you're totally safe.
    I'll note though that one notable incident that's attached to the My Way killings is a total coincidence. Apparently, the victim was always a hit target for what is believed to be a politically motivated assassination. The killing just happened to occur while the victim was singing "My Way" at a karaoke when 2 men on a motorcycle passed by and shot him so suddenly.

      The fact that any song, period, can cause such reactions and/or the death of an individual is absurd. I don't know what the laws are like in the Philippines, but I'd like to think murder equates to a severe prison sentence of some kind. Wonder if it's worth it to those who find themselves SO upset over a damn song that they'd rather take someone's life than just leave the room or something

      EDIT:
      But truthfully, it really only rarely happens. The My Way ban from karaoke is only prevalent in the Manila/Luzon areas, but here in the Visayas (or at least where I'm at), there appears to be no such ban because I recall hearing someone sing My Way in a public karaoke fairly recently, and it was peaceful. It's also still available in the song list in some karaokes.

      Consequences are one thing... but to fine a man just because he didn't have the foresight to assume that someone might get trapped in a giant oven is a bit ridiculous. I could understand if the money went to the family of the victim, but I really doubt it did... and what would time in prison teach the guy? "Gee, next time I design an industrial oven, I'd better think about every single possible way that someone could do something stupid and get hurt..." Both the victim and the guy who turned on the oven were negligent, not just the company and the guy who designed the machine. Unfortunately, the victim suffered the ultimate consequence for his own negligence. I sure as hell wouldn't screw around in a giant oven that I had just repaired, KNOWING that it could be turned on at that point and nobody would be able to hear me yelling over the other noise in the factory.
      The moral of the story is that people shouldn't trust companies, or anyone else, for their OWN safety.

      Make sure your company has Lock out, Tag out procedures in place. First, go to power source and make sure the power is off, then lockwire a Lock out, Tag out Tag, normally red, onto the switch in a way that it can't be turned on unless the lockwire is cut. Only the person who put the tag in place can remove it. There are signature, date, as so forth lines to fill out on the tag. If you can't lockwire it into the off position, the tag lockwired on the appropriate switch is at least better than nothing. In addition, training should be required so that everyone working there knows what the tags are, what they mean, where blank ones can be found and how to use them. It's also a good idea to work in teams and make sure when maintenance is being done on a particularly dangerous piece of machinery that it is announced at start of the shift meetings or turnover meetings.

    As someone who is constantly told that the music I like incites violence, it’s quite uncanny to hear that My Way by Frank Sinatra is basically triggering The Purge in the Philippines… Topsy-turvy world we live in.

      Honestly I was floored when I heard this because I also feel this way when hearing that song. Something about the melody makes me unbelievably angry, it’s just such a horrible horrible combination of sounds to me. I hate literally every aspect of it, from the words to the melody and the rhythm, the long drawn out notes. And I normally like tons of Sinatra songs! It’s so bizarre.

      That's cool you have something entertaining to seemingly distract you from these things. And I'm sorry for your loss and the current situation. The best thing to do and to turn to is Jesus Christ. Without him we're all doomed and we're all going to die one day then it's heaven or hell and without him we would be going to hell. Jesus is always there waiting on us to come to him, he is the savior. Anyways take care and God bless.

      @thatwasweird954 Před 9 měsíci +56

      Yeah, that story didn't make any sense until it clicked in my head, "Oh, they're hoarders." The rat infestation, a room so full of stuff that someone can get trapped behind it and no one can see her -- and, finally, a body decomposing and no one thinks the smell is strange.

      I'm def not a hoarder, but these stories make me want to get up and clean. So sad thats what contributed to her death. Ill bet with all those drugs she was disoriented AND being upside down, hopefully she just passed out and died in her sleep.

    • @BeRightBack131
      @BeRightBack131 Před 9 měsíci +9

      Yeah, that first story blew me away. Whatever happened to safety procedures we take for granted in the US? Lock out/tag out, buddy system (one person stands guard outside the door, just in case), double checking that all is clear before restarting a machine or other piece of equipment, communication with coworkers, "hey I'm gonna be working on this, do not restart just because lights come back on, escape/panic button in case of accidental confinement... there were SO MANY WAYS this could have been prevented. It's beyond a "perfect storm," this was just downright carelessness on everyone's part. I would have never gone inside a contained space like that without multiple safety nets, such as a guard on the lockout/tag out, a guard/buddy at the door, a big piece of equipment (dolly, metal bar, something to block the door from closing, etc.), unplugging the equipment, etc. I also would never just hit restart on a piece of equipment just because the lights came back on. I would personally walk down and check that it's okay to restart before doing so. Such a sad and totally preventable death.

We're a Filipino household, and the majority of the people I'm talking about were serving in the US military & living in the US, which is why it's just beyond bizarre to me that this song elicits violence.

    So many people get killed cleaning up in a factory...Including my father. He was cleaning up in a chipper mill because the night shift didn't do it. He went underneath a belt to sweep some sawdust, but when he pulled the broom back, it got stuck in the feeder, so it tried to pull the metal broom handle in, but my dad was stuck between the broom and the metal underneath the belt. The broom crushed his chest and he was stuck there until someone found him. He died instantly, and the only mark on him was a tiny bruise on the center of his chest where the broom hit him.
