shinji was rejected his whole life, he wanted love and affect from his father, but it was denied, he wanted misato to accept him, yet she still had trouble with him, he wanted asuka to help him in the coffee scene, and he was thrown and insulted at, he hated the world because all he wanted was to be accepted, he chokes asuka not because he hates her, but because she represents the rejection of everyone around shinji, but asuka realized how shinji felt during the third impact as she was tecnically fused with everyone including shinji, she finally understands that the only thing he craves has been denied to him for so long, and for the first time, she shows affection to shinji

Yeah, i would say you are mostly right. There is that official card game or something made back in the day by gainax and it describes the last scene in a similar way:
"Shinji renounced the world where all hearts had melted into one and accepted each other unconditionally. His desire... to live with 'others'-- other hearts that would sometimes reject him, even deny him. That is why the first thing he did after coming to his senses was to place his hands around asuka's neck. To feel the existence of an 'other'. To confirm (make sure of) rejection and denial."

For me ''One More Finale: I Need You'' is the Greatest Finale in cinema. Throughout the entire series, we see Asuka's desire to become an adult. In episode 22, we get why she wants to be an adult. Because she hated that little girl for every time she went to her mother, who didn't show her care and love. (It's so nice detail the angel disguised as little Asuka and asked "Do you love me?")
Asuka wanted to be independent and not let anyone get close to her or show affection because if she let them get close, they would have a chance to hurt her. For people who are constantly trying to struggle with their problems on their own, constantly trying to stay strong and not wanting to be an emotional burden on anyone, this can be very relatable. But the irony is you can't be independent or strong. (Evangelion Ost: Infantile Dependence, Adult Dependency). Because people are weak and dependent on each other, they can be needy and disgusting. Arael shows her that she still hasn't changed much from that little girl, that she is still weak and needs people. Shows her childish steps towards Kaji, her addiction to Eva, and her attempts to get Shinji's attention. That's why she hates Shinji and herself. Shinji is weak and needy just like her. At the end, she sees that little girl on the beach once again. Instead of attacking him or hating herself again. She chooses to show affection to the boy who is waiting for love and care. Finally, Asuka accepts herself and understands Shinji. It's a great end about self-love and accepting reality. Yes people are weak and sometimes do disgusting things. Sometimes we get hurt and make mistakes. Asuka comes back as she accepts this truth, choosing to continue no matter ''How Disgusting'' it is because this is the only place he/she can be happy.
For Shinji, "I Need You" starts off pretty scary. A city in ruins, a red sea, a blood moon, a cemetery and a world where no one (Yet) returns. And Finally Asuka, the girl he loves and hates, the girl who will hate him after all he's done on EoE. A magnificent show of despair and destructiveness. Actually, you can think of the finale as the summary of Evangelion. Shinji came out of instrumentality with his feelings for his loved ones, but the world he came back to is far from that. End Of Evangelion tells hope, but you cannot explain hope under happy circumstances. Hope is precious in the worst times, when ''You Need'' it most. Shinji is afraid that Asuka might hurt him again, will reject him again. And so he tries to kill Asuka just like he killed the whole world in the instrumentality. But something happens and Asuka touches Shinji. There he sees something that Asuka in instrumentality (In his mind) could never do. His hopeless dream is actually a product of his own fears. Even in your worst moment there is still hope, as long as you live there is a chance to be happy.

Ardından da instrumentality'i başlatıyor zaten.

I dont understand why people say this is a "dark ending". Shinji literally saved the world and got the girl at the end. Everyone that got turned into goop (except for Shinjis dad) can regain their human forms if they want too, or they can stay as goop its up to them. Japan may be devistated but the rest of the world is fine. So I imagine that Asuka is sent back to Germany along with Shinji and they live happily ever after. The world adjusts and rebuilds eventually. No more angels. No more Evas. No more NERV. The world is finally at peace and things are finally good.

People look on the surface level because it presents an extremely optimistic message in the most dark and horrifying way possible.
That being said, the world is going to take a LONG time to heal. Even though most technology is still intact, having the biosphere temporarily thrown off like this is going to completely fuck with the environment. Considering how fucked these two are and yet they still reject instrumentality, most people are probably going to come back eventually and humanity will survive and be in a better state that they were after Second Impact, but it's going to take a long time and be incredibly difficult. The movie just ends shortly before things are going to start getting better. It's like you successfully puked out ricin and lived and the ending is staring at the blood and vomit.

for anyone who doesn't understand here's what this means: after the instrumentality project was completed, all of humanity was subsumed into one oversoul. Shinji rejected instrumentality because he couldn't concieve of himself being one with everyone else. It's unsure why asuka rejected instrumentality, but there are a few theories. One: she's in love with shiji and because shinji wasn't part of it she wanted to come back to be with him. Two: she always based her self worth on being superior to everyone else, which is impossible within the instrumentality project, and rejected it because she wanted to be her own person.

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. I’m deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. I’ve been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friend’s recent suicide alive.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I would’ve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldn’t be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping they’d understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which I’ve been struggling with for over a year now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. I’m afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
There’s a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
I want to prove to myself I’m not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
But the fact I’m the only one I know in existence who’s been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
Whenever I feel this way, there’s something I remind myself with.
But finally, with 3.0+1.0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
But if things hadn’t turned out that way, I wouldn’t be here today.

I’ve come to think about the ending like this over the years: the end of the world via Human Instrumentality… and the subsequent refusal of ultimate peace (“nirvana”) as a result of realizing the intrinsic value of human existence… and the subsequent return to a post-apocalyptic world… is like what happens when you realize that you’ve been living a life you’re ashamed of… and then destroy the entire conceptual schema through which you interpret the world… thus leaving you with a completely anomalous, completely new domain of potential to colonize, where the only tradeoff is you have to almost be like a child again. After years of struggling with gut-wrenching nihilism (and its complimentary depression), I somehow eventually decided to shut it up and redefine the meaning of life… by taking more responsibility for improving the world around me. And I felt exactly like Shinji here: I had to destroy the entire world (or, the lens through which I was viewing/conceptualizing the world)… thus leaving me with nothing but a sort-of post-apocalyptic rubble… and afterward everything was new. I would go for long walks and I’d look at the color patterns of houses and the dewdrops on the grass and the shapes of clouds as if I was a child, discovering these things for the first time. It took me months to start to go as far as setting real goals for myself… and understanding the implications of those goals in broader contexts… but I’m learning new things every day. It’s amazing what this show has been able to communicate. I think we are unfathomably indebted to its creators.

I first watched this series and the movie when I was a freshman in high school about 9 years ago, it was my very first “mature” anime besides DBZ and all the dubbed 4Kids shows. After I watched the whole thing, I spent weeks/months trying to understand every facet of this series, until I just reached the conclusion that Shinji was just a bitch. Almost 10 years later, I understand now the severe depression/mental illness Anno wrote into this character, as my own mental health deteriorates. I love this show again and I don’t think any other piece of art will ever top it for me.

There's two or more way to interpret Shinji Ikari. You can take the callous route and say he was a 'little bitch' for not standing up for himself and being a stoic god like Guts at the age of 14. You could go the realistic sympathetic route and say he's a 14 year old kid with hardly anyone who displays affection to him so obviously he'd become a depressive mess who's frankly mentally strong for not taking the easy way out and killing himself.

the way I see it shinji is strangling asuka here not because he hates her but because he is a broken person who doesnt know how else to communicate with her and asuka doesnt really dislike shinji so she comforts him and that causes him to break down crying due to being shown kindness by another person and then as for asuka saying how disgusting/i feel sick I guess that COULD be a reference to the opening hospital scene but I think its more likely because she is disgusted by the idea of friendship and human connections so even if this ending is technically happy and humanity will come back to life its really sad if you think about it that shinji and asuka are this unused to the idea of others being kind to them

  • @tabula.rasa.
    @tabula.rasa. Před 9 měsíci +15

I could gush about this scene forever because holy fuck, it is the *perfect* encapsulation of the entire series.
Shinji and Asuka, two separate individuals who are not in instrumentality anymore are next to each other, their hands close - but still apart. Shinji wakes up and sees Asuka, and his immediate reaction is fear. Asuka has been nothing but abusive towards him the entire show, she's the one person besides his father most likely to hurt him. He's afraid of rejection, he's afraid of pain, he's afraid of everything terrible that can come from connecting with another person, so he attempts to take the easy way out and choke Asuka, cut off her voice and silence her so that he can remain alone in his world. He would be lonely, but no one else could could ever hurt him this way.
But Asuka defies his expectations, she doesn't reject him or cause him more pain, she caresses his face in the gentlest way possible, accepting him. Shinji can finally let down his guard, let another person into his world, and he crumbles into tears on top of Asuka. The most unlikely person to accept him.
And then there's the final line, "how disgusting". I think it's purposefully meant to be vague, she could be referring to the state of the world around them, or to Shinji's actions while she was in a coma/when they were in instrumentality. And that's the point. Communication with other people will never be direct, there will always be a sense of vagueness, uneasiness, insecurity, you can never exactly know what someone else is thinking.
But despite that, you have to embrace the uncertainty and pain, you need to. That is the final message of Eva. That the anxiety, suffering, and possible rejection that comes with opening up to another person is worth it, and that shutting yourself off won't get you anywhere.
