    Hi, my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent comes from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work, but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I would only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people consider this the lowest time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly, what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving, and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I have been living full-time in my self convert van.

    Hello Emi! Here in the states, we call them deer flies. The females are the ones that bite, taking blood for their eggs. They live in wet areas and are attracted to dark clothing. Try wearing white or khaki on your hikes. Also, it sounds strange, but carrying an umbrella disrupts their flight... They won't fly under it. Hope this helps. Thank you for sharing your adventures and beautiful photos/videos😊

    If no one has told you about Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, now someone has. If you've not been there I can recommend it - especially for those with Francophone heritage or curious about Canadian/Francophone history. I just stayed in town parking under the trees. The history is fascinating, the town has a truly international population, is pretty, and the people are wonderful.

    I was just in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and when the weather warmed up the black flies came out in hoards. What you are describing sounds like black flies. They are relentless. They bite through clothes, they care nothing about bug sprays. They were all over our car and would not even fly away when we hit the window to scare them. My understanding is that they are a seasonal thing but are exceptionally bad this year.

    Tea tree oil will disinfect, de-itch and help heal insect bites. To prevent them, I resort to chemical sprays outside. Yard Guard really works! You have to keep Kitty inside for a bit while you spray, and it has a heavy consistency like a milky fog. But it works, keeps bugs away for hours!

    No one told you about Waterton because fewer people go there despite the scenery being stunning. Most tourists are drawn off to Banff/Jasper and ignore lovely Waterton. Of course, there's still a heap of tourists there but fewer than the 'big draw' of Banff. I loved the way the Prairies met the Rockies outside the park and the fact that the park is not solely Canadian but continues into the USA.

    I'm very sensitive to any biting insect. even a small mosquito bite can turn into a big infected bite. So prevention is key for me. As much as I hate chemicals, I have to use
    strong repellant outside and cover up as much as I can stand. Then Benadryl itch relief sticks or creams on bites asap BEFORE I start scratching. It makes summer outings most unpleasant for me. Good luck.

    In the U.S. we can buy from Avon Products "Skin So Soft." It has a citronella-type scent that bugs don't seem to care for. I use a 50-50 ratio, of the product and water, and put it in a spray bottle. Works quite well, and smells nice.

    Oh My Gosh Emi! Luv every single wildlife shot you've shared with us! Thank you! Now I'm the gal who previously mentioned my love of waterfalls & a few of the main ones in Manitoba. I'm continuing with this video saying that I lived in Calgary & just outside of Edmonton for many, many years. I thought I had explored most of Alberta while I was living there, but I've never heard of these falls. Ever! It's an absolutely gorgeous area! Another destination that I must now add to my bucket list! Thank you, TY! Thank you so much for taking us with you on your explorations! 🥰

    • @tamo9520
      @tamo9520 Před měsícem

      O.K., I had to stop your video & search on the map for the falls. The funny thing is that I used to work at Waterton Prov. Park. Years ago, mind you. {I'm starting the video again & I'm excited to see if you love the park as much as I did when I worked there, or if it's changed all that much} At first, I was shocked that I haven't heard of Lundbreck or the falls, but I guess when you aren't taking the time to explore your surroundings along the way to a destination that you have planned, you miss soooo much!
      {Because you mentioned that you hoped you were pronouncing the name correctly, I'm hoping this is just a helpful F.Y.I. - Waterton: the "ton" in Waterton, is pronounced just like the ton in one "ton" truck; or the first 2 letters in the beginning of the word onion, or even 'un'do - there's no letter 'w' after the letter o in Waterton, or it would be pronounced like Watertown, but because there is no 'w' it's not pronounced like the word town}

    If you don't teach your child discipline and to sit still for a few minutes, there isn't any photographer that is going to get a good picture of him outside of a studio setting. And even then, it's going to have to be one fantastic photographer who can capture that child's attention for that perfect split second.

    The safest thing to do to not get bitten these days is to cover up. Any good outdoor store (The North Face or whatever) can advise you on what type of hiking gear to wear in hot weather (long sleeves, long pants). Being bitten by flies is one thing, but a tick bite is another issue altogether! They are everywhere in Canada now. Also, Kitty could be bitten by a tick as well. Is she taking medication? Hopefully she is protected.

    My sister lives in upstate Vermont. She has those black flies that bite just like the one you showed on your video. We don’t have them where I live in Tennessee so I wasn’t used to having to fight them when outdoors. When I visited her the first time, she warned me about them. I am used to fighting off mosquitoes, which are bad enough. They’re all terrible!

    Waterton (final syllable is ton like the weight measure not town like a city) is such a beautiful place. It’s like a mini (but better) Banff. The wind in that part of Alberta is epic, but so are the bugs!

    SSS oil by Avon (blue cap) has a soft scent. You can wash it off with a washcloth. You may also use the lotion it works well also. I would not recc for Kiddie cuz she is very clean and likes to lick herself...

    The more times I see the inside of your van, with the hig top, those photographs you did, and all the bright space, the more I am taken by it. Nice job!

    They are black flies. They are attracted to certain blood types. I believe any deet spray will repell them.
