The two pilots met afterwards and both cried as they embraced each other like old friends, because one of them just didn't want to pull the trigger and finish of a helpless enemy, but instead decided to help. Makes you wonder over and over again If any of that bloodshed and destruction was necessary in the first place. I don't think you have half a clue how slow those planes could fly before stalling. A lot of things you can't do with a modern day fighter yet was quite possible in those days. There's good reasons why most acrobatics pilots still use prop planes to this day

Everybody forgets about the brits. The Luftwaffe broke its teeth over the isles, losing strategic and tactical capabilities that it couldn't afford to lose. They lost planes, some of the best pilots they had, and time they didn't have against a RAF that fought like a wounded beast. Also, to give credit where it's due, without the US, Europe would be speaking German right now. Lend-Lease made the difference, kept both the UK and USSR in the war.
@Ariana321 True enough. The Poles, the Czechs even Belgians and French piloted in the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe. Sadly, we all know how they were rewarded for their bravery.
@ozzo70 *if the soviets were not countering* You have to realize the western allies are not incompetent, seeing as they were able to not only hold Britain in the face of an aerial Blitzkrieg, but were also able to make in return decisive strikes against German forces stationed in France. The German Luftwaffe received much more damages than they managed to inflict in that campaign. Thousands of planes lost compared to Britain's losses. Not mention the expulsion of Axis forces from Africa.
