Mariza singing Gente da Minha Terra live at the David Letterman Show in October 2007.
Letra // Lyrics:
É meu e vosso este fado
Destino que nos amarra
Por mais que seja negado
Às cordas de uma guitarra
Sempre que se ouve o gemido
De uma guitarra a cantar
Fica-se logo perdido
Com vontade de chorar
Ó gente da minha terra
Agora é que eu percebi
Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que recebi
E pareceria ternura
Se eu me deixasse embalar
Era maior a amargura
Menos triste o meu cantar
Ó gente da minha terra
Agora é que eu percebi
Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que recebi
(SOLO)
Ó gente da minha terra
Agora é que eu percebi
Esta tristeza que trago
Foi de vós que recebi
Composição // Music By: Amália Rodrigues & Tiago Machado - Hudba
For David Letterman and those in the audience it was a shock, understandably, they had never heard anything like it. They didn't understand the lyrics of the song but they felt the strength of 'Fado' in their chests.
And when the 'Fado' hits you, it hits you like lightning, you go up to the sky and when you wake up with those final chords of the Portuguese guitar, you come back to earth amazed because you've just heard the music of the Gods.
Wish we could see David's face bc the anouncement and thank you were so completly different
imagina se ele entende-se a letra
Exactly. It's like a mysterious Gypsy song that takes you to the streets of Lisbon.
@@kevingallagher3584 Gypsy?
I'm portuguese, Fado is "saudade", a word that doesn't have translation in English. There are very kinds of that. The famous "fadista" (the singer" is Amália Rodrigues that give to the world the Fado. This one is "Ó gente da minha terra" (more or less "oh people of my land"- talks about the sadness that she has because she get from her own people of other there country
She did a concert in France and I was here. People didnt understand the lyrics but they cried. She is a diva. Portugal has a very rich history.
A great sign, Letterman's musicians came out to applaude.
This is a true singer: a voice and two guitars makes you travel to another world. No dancers, no sexy poses, no heavy make-up or strange clothes. This is art.
😂😂😂😂😂
mai nada, falou e disse
Such a refined sophistication, not something most people from the US are prepared for. Sublime Fado.
This guitarist is amazing!
Sublime! Wonderful, powerful! What an amazing country is Portugal! We Brazilians are deeply proud of our Portuguese heritage.
Mariza knocked the snide right out of David's wise ass. He's a better man for it.
those burgers had the luck to hear this marvelous singer.
grettings from peru.
I think the room had to be repainted after that, since Mariza clearly ripped it off the walls.
During the recording of this live album, Mariza was so moved by the emotion of the fado she was singing that she even shed tears.
Mariza is a phenomenal singer as witnessed by her performance here 10 years ago on the David Letterman show. He congratulates her by shaking her hand and doesn't engage her in conversation. (She speaks excellent English). What I noticed was that he spent ONE second looking at her and never again! What a schlock he is, absolutely no class whatsoever. Good riddance!
Mariza continues to shine with unbelievable verve. Good on ya, girl!
O Fado representa bem a alma portuguesa 💪🇵🇹
David falou "lá do alto" e rapidamente desceu à terra..
I loved david letterman when I was a teen, thought he was so funny. In this video I just see him a a bafoon plain and simple 🤡 Mariza is way way out of his league 💕 Sublime Mariza. Eu te amo para sempre
I've missed so many of the greats, I hope to see Mariza Live before I depart this earth.
Portugals Blues & Soul music from Mariza, is outstanding.
.
Fado is unique. You cannot compare it with any other music genre.
Minha terra....it's my country too, Portugal. An extremely emotional song (like most Fado) but Mariza adds so much to it. I am proud to be Portuguese, where people are allowed to show emotions, where men may cry and hug and kiss each other. I lived in Holland for a long time....such a different culture. The total opposite. People rather don't show emotions or "weakness" and all though Holland was good to me, I feel like an alien there. Viva Portugal, minha terra.
Saudades.
What is the song title...?
Caiu no chão...
"O people of my land, now I realize that this sadness that I bring was from you that I received it."
Only those who are Portuguese can understand the true meaning of these words.
It's a lot of history, many ups and downs of this millenary land that was once the biggest empire in the world and was once the poorest country in Europe. This leaves marks carved in our hearts passed from generation to generation. Portugal is unique and the Portuguese language is the most beautiful in the world.
take a chill pill
The sadnesses I bring

Now they say we are the PIGS (Portugal, Italy, Spain and Greece). All of these countries had imperious. All of this countries had given knowledge to the rest of Europe. And all of these countries have unique culture that none of the rest of those who call us PIGS has so I'm proud to belong to it
I saw her in Brisbane, Australia. She was amazing!

this song always get me 😢. my husband is azorean Portuguese born Canadian does not matter where he is. that he will always be an azorean Portuguese
My father 72 is also Azorean Portuguese born and raised. He migrated to Canada at age 21 where he married and had me and my siblings. I use to ask him why he never became a Canadian citizen and he’d say the same thing. As much as he loves respects and thanks Canada he will always be Portuguese no matter where he is.

Consequently she has grow up Portuguese in culture and artistry and, with much versatility, as well as audible and visual elegance.

Proud to be portuguese....always
Simplesmente sem palavras
"Is both mine and yours this fado
destiny that tides us (together)
no matter how much it is denied
by the strings of a guitar
whenever one hears a lament
of a guitar singing
one is instantly lost
With a desire to weep
Oh people of my land
Now I've understand
This sadness which I carry on
Was from you that I received
and it would seem tenderness
If I let myself be soothed
my anguish would be greater
my singing (would be) less sadder
Oh people of my land!"
+trqster excelente traduçao
Cry* :)
To the strings of a guitar*
De resto, muito boa tradução! ;)
"It's both mine and yours this fado
destiny that ties us together
no matter how much it is denied
to the strings of a guitar
whenever one hears a lament
of a guitar singing
one is instantly lost
With a desire to cry
Oh people of my land
Now I understand
This sadness which I carry
It was from you that I received it
and it would seem like tenderness
If I let myself be soothed
the bitterness would be greater
my singing less sad
Oh people of my land!"* (a bit more accurate)

If they knew the privilege they had to hear her live.. Well..
Now.. They can go back to listen Beyonce 😏 ..
Riccardo Macedo Mariza is beyond AMAZING, beyond BEAUTIFUL, but your comment makes it seem like listening to Beyoncé isn’t a great thing. Beyoncé is GOD. And that’s one PERIODT
Oh no you didn't my friend! There's gonna be trouble. Make that a double. Fado is the heart & soul of Portugal. It's about life VERISEMO. Comparing Fado to Beyonce serves no purpose my friend. Two totally different genres. Music does not have boundaries & well always be very diverse. Take care Arnold Bourbon Amaral
If you listen the applauses at the end, you will understand that the public truly appreciated her...some Americans may be ignorant but not all..
No need to compare Fado to Pop. They don't belong in the same group.
Or Nicki Minaj!
👍🏻
a flor da pele
Did he really say "As we say in Sintra"?
Letterman as any other joker on the business. then the surprise. Getting beaten everywhere
Muita areia para a cabeça do americano!
