- Across the last two episodes of Triangle X Squared O, we’ve gone deep on WWF RAW and its sequel, WWE RAW 2. Neither game is particularly good, with RAW 2 falling far, far short of expectations. After these two failures, developer Anchor Inc. would be relieved of their WWE duties, with the keys to the kingdom being handed over to Studio Gigante, a team lead by Mortal Kombat co-creator John Tobias. On today’s episode of Triangle X Squared O: The Wrestling Game Retrospective Series, we close out the Xbox Trilogy with the third and final exclusive entry, WWE WrestleMania 21. You thought RAW and RAW 2 were sights to behold? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Business is about to pick up!

Sad you didn't have the right version of this game. Listen your not missing much with career mode. Game isn't much else better once patched. It still runs like crap. I bought this game day one but I got used to it. They could have done better
Here's something. To add to what I said. In the caw mode Goldberg was the green guy when you Previewed moves 😂. But modded Xbox owners. Can download the patch and unlock Goldberg and. Other npc's too

As a former Xbox gamer you could imagine my relief when we upgraded to the 360 & FINALLY got a good wrestling game with SVR 2007, we earned it lol
SVR 07 itself was a glitchy mess, at least the PS2 version was.
I remember hitting guys with chairs and having Lawler yell out "STONE COLD STUNNER!" among other things.

actually svr 07 is when it started to get bad, it was the beginning of wrestling games never being good again till this day.

If I remember correctly, the online functionality was inaccessible on release, not career mode. You have to create a wrestler to play career mode.

When I was like 9 years old, ,my friend got this game a little bit after it had just came out and we were amazed at the time. We couldn't believe how real it was, the soundtrack was and still is GOATED (I love anxiety by black eyed peas and papa roach) and our nieve minds thought the gameplay and storyline was sick. But then I grew up and revisited it and realized that... We kinda got dupped lmao.
Although the gameplay wasn’t great I still love the story, thought it was a step up from Raw 2 season mode where there was 0 voice acting.

This breaks my heart. Breaks my heart. I spent HOURS, HOURS playing this game as an 8 year old in my PEAK WWE fandom. I vividly remember watching the ads during raw episodes and being a proud Xbox owner. I probably played the career mode 10 times. AND IT WAS ALL FOR FUCKING NOTHING. On a serious note, when I was 8 I loved this game. Literally spending hours doing everything you could. Glad I was naïve and oblivious.
I envy you. Even when I was a kid, I hated this game and played RAW 2 over it (and you know this is an awful game if RAW 2 is better in comparison. Lol).
So glad that Ian survived this 3 on 1 handicap match with the Xbox series!

Ah yes, this game. It could have been so much better. I almost unlocked everything but couldn't stand the collision detection and AI. I was able to get in touch with the legendary John Tobias as he was the lead designer and director of Studio Gigante and he told me a lot of breakthrough information about the game.
-The game was VERY rushed. It was rushed to tie in with the WrestleMania 21 pay per view airing on Sky Sports.
-There were supposed to be more match types and multiplayer playability but was cut out due to time constraints.
-The Create A Wrestler was supposed to be more in depth.
-There was little to no QA testing done on the game.
-Supposedly there were legal problems with WWE/THQ with the roster and soundtrack.
-The game was actually in development from late 2003.
-Someone found in the games files that over 10 playable wrestlers were planned to be in the game but were cut out due to leaving WWE or unknown reasons. This was confirmed by an artist who worked in Studio Gigante.
-A modder also found that in a Polygon article one of the creative directors said that they wanted to make Tao Feng 2 whilst THQ gave them the rights to work on this game. Some disagreements between budget and development occured and that led to Tao Feng 2 to be scrapped which then caused the team to grow careless whilst trying to get this game finished and released. The wrong build of the game was accidently released in stores.
In other words, this studio was a goddamn mess and I'm glad they went under. Honestly, screw THQ for picking these guys. Why not, I don't know, PICK A GODDAMN TEAM THAT ACTUALLY HAS EXPERIENCE!

God damn, I would've loved to have seen a sequel for Tao Feng, it's a game I feel that should've at the very least be made available on the Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility, it was an overshadowed gem for the OG Xbox. Too bad TF2 got scrapped and instead we got this broken unfinished mess of a wrestling game.
I was almost obsessed with playing this game as a child, I remember the back of the case so vividly because of how much I looked at it. I wanted my mom to rent an Xbox from Family Video, along with the game, just so I could play it. Luckily she never did lol.
Lmao i swear i remember the case so vividly and just dying to get the game but my xbox was broken at the time. I remember seeing The Undertaker throwing mankind off the cell, him doing his signature victory pose in front of the judgement day arena, and i think Randy Orton and Cena were on the back along with some other wrestlers that i cant remember. Fast forward to maybe a couple months later when i got a new xbox, i finally managed to buy the game at a walmart and when i got home i could not tell you how excited i was to play the game... until i actually did😵 lmao only thing that i was amazed with was the graphics. Gameplay was OK but overall the game lacked in damn near everything😂 very buggy with not much to offer at all.

This series is so good. I would kill to see u to do retrospectives of the old Japanese games like Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, King Of Colosseum 2, and Wrestle Kingdom. Those games are my all time favs

I knew WM21 was gawbidge. I bought it just to see for myself. I remember that whenever your opponent knocked you to the mat you were literally rocking yourself to sleep just trying to get up.
Career mode seemed to have promise but trying to win a match in three minutes was a crime given how bad the gameplay was. I returned the game like a week after.
Even though I played Raw 2 the most out of the three 🙈 I thoroughly enjoyed your retrospective on each.

Truly believe this is one of the biggest reasons one of my friends fell out of love with wrestling growing up. Had he experienced the SvR games like I did I think he would’ve stuck around. (DOR is fantastic too I just didn’t grow up with it).
Holy hell....this game had the clunkiest controls, and unquestionably the longest Undertaker entrance on any wrestling game EVER.

Even the legendary WWF SmackDown and WWF Smackdown 2 are light-years ahead of this game and let's not forget these two games on the mighty PS1

I remember being out shopping with my dad and I see this game in the bargain bin for £2 I had never heard of it and my dad was happy to get it for me because of the price I was so excited to get home and I was more or less instantly happy we didn't pay full price 🤣😂🤣
I had the same exact experience. I was 4 years old, shopping with my parents, when I notice that there's a game on sale for $4 (the store must've been REALLY desperate to sell this game, since I'm pretty sure it was only a few months old at the time). We bought it, and I played it...and then immediately after playing a match, I took it out and played RAW 2 instead. Even at that age, I knew it was crap.
What's funny is that I had the Platinum Hits version, which has the patch, and it's STILL awful. I'm so happy this developer doesn't exist anymore. I hate that THQ, for god knows what reason, chose the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel developers for their Xbox wrestling games. I honestly think they hated Microsoft, so they just dumped crap on the platform. I can't think of any other reason as to why they'd torture us like that. Lol.

11:50 My theory is that it's a game developer or someone like that doing placeholder commentary that somehow got left in.
In SVR 06's prototype, they would have the staff record commentary as a placeholder before the actual commentary team could record it, so that's what i'm basing it off of.
I know BYW2 is going to get a bad review but I can't help but enjoy it, looking forward to the next review!

I was so mad when I got this game. As a child, I had a PlayStation while my friends had a N64 and enjoyed those wrestling classics.

What’s very funny about this game, is that despite how awful this one is with its reputation, with the worst gameplay of the whole Xbox trilogy, I still want to try this one and Xbox trilogy one day. My older twin cousins used to have an OG Xbox back then, and out of them all, this one was their favorite. I’m sure it’s because of 3 things.
1, they probably didn’t know any better as kids, and weren’t lucky enough to get a PS2 for the classics.
2, it’s probably because these games took place under Ruthless Aggression, meaning because of the fun product at the time, nothing distracted them back then, and they were able to have fun.
3, maybe they were lucky to have a working copy with not much glitches?
I don’t know how, but I’m serious😅. They legit had fun back then, and I’m so curious to see this for myself, one day. My friend Jon and I were so excited when this game came out. He called me when he bought it and I came over that night. It was the first and last time I played it. It's in my collection of OG Xbox game and I still haven't played it again.

There’s a career mode match vs big show in a last man standing match. I threw that fuck through 50 tables, used 20 chairs, and 30 finishers AND HE KEPT GETTING BACK UP. I was there for almost a full hour. I thought I was there all day.

in the PAL version of the Game, no Bugs at all, i spent so much in Time in this, and I Loved it

I remember having this game. There was no downloadable patch that I can remember but I do remember you had to send your disc to THQ and they would send you an updated disc. THATS how broken this game was
I remember purchasing this once, I thought that the visuals looked pretty decent. I remember I played one match, just one and I was unable to comprehend what I was playing, it was just preposterous. I turned it off and never ever played it again.

I made a create a wrestler and it was still locked so I looked up online and found out the platinum hits version did gave you access to the career mode

Although the game is trash, it holds a special place in my heart. My cousin and his dad lived upstairs from us after my Aunt passed. He only had the Xbox. So when I’d sleep over up there we only had WM 21 to play. As a kid, it was fun to just be able to hang out with my cousin. Watching New Years Revolution 2005 on DVD every time and then playing this POS.

I remember this well. I bought, and played this game maybe twice before it went on the shelf, never to be played again.
I remember being a kid and pestering my mom on end to pleaseeee buy me an Xbox just so I could play this game. Simply because it looked INCREDIBLE. Many years later after I saved up money from a summer job, I finally got my hands on it. I literally got a pit in my stomach after playing it the first day and proceeded to never pick it up again. I felt scammed. Thank you for making me relive the travesty that is WM21. Haven’t played a worse wrestling game yet

4:12 judgement day (ppv) & purple lights. Now we have a facton called The judgement day & they have purple lighting in their entrance. Interesting coincidence there. This game somehow kind of predicted the future.
The answer to your question at 4:12 is thet the devs are time travellers and wanted to give a hint towards the stable of that same name that came together in 2022.
I am SO glad you ripped this p.o.s apart like you did. I bought into the hype and pre-ordered it and to say upon release I was disgusted is an understatement. Thankfully and it wasn't often it was allowed but EB Games did gave me a full refund and not just store credit.

I grew up with PlayStation, being disappointed I missed out on the Xbox and GameCube line of games. But the more I watch of these the more grateful I am that I grew up with know your role, shut your mouth, and svr

PS2 was quite weak compared to other consoles at the time, but the game lineup is where it outshined the competition.
The one good thing I can say about this game is that it’s probably the only wrestling game (that I’ve played) where the wrestlers come out from the side at the start of their entrances

This one hit when I was kind of losing steam as a WWE fan, plus I would have had the PS2 games by then so I wasn’t paying much attention to what Xbox was doing.
Wow, this is bad. I see now why I’ve somehow never heard of this game. That part where it wouldn’t load and the Xbox was struggling was crazy, although I had a good laugh at Cole going “mINNEAP--hey Taz, what’s your predict---SODA” hahaha
Was that third unknown announcer just a guide vocal? My best guess is they fed the line to Michael Cole and he just repeated it, then forgot to actually use Cole’s take and kept the guide in the game haha.
The fact that an entire campaign just wasn’t in the game at launch is insane. As fun as it’s been to see you suffer through these, I’m happy your sanity will be spared going forward haha. Great video!
