  • Molly Bloom started running a poker game in Los Angeles in 2007 - the game attracted some of the biggest names in Hollywood as well as sports, politics and tech. Players included Tobey Maguire, Ben Affleck and Leonardo diCaprio.
Ms Bloom was arrested for money laundering and running an illegal sports gambling operation in 2011.
She later wrote a memoir, Molly's Game, about her experiences which Aaron Sorkin later adapted for screen, directing Jessica Chastain in the lead role. Molly's Game was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2018.
In this interview Ms Bloom answers questions from Oxford Union President, Hannah Edwards, about how she got started, dealing with threats from the mob & the hierarchy of sports stars in the poker game. #speaker

ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

The director Aaron Sorkin has stated that it was an "amalgamation of individuals who attended the game" but Michael Cera who played the character of Player X said his performance was entirely based upon Tobey Maguire, which aligns nicely with some of the "facts" presented in the movie. The game was initially hosted at Maguire's house (thus his importance to the initial poker group) before moving to The Viper Room (the real life cobra room) and finally the four seasons for Molly's own game, he was stated by Molly to be one of the better players in her games and in fact in one sitting he took at least 300,000 USD from the character of Bad Brad (real life counterpart Brad Ruderman) some of which was stolen in a ponzi scheme and lead to an 80k USD settlement from Maguire to the affected parties during a lawsuit over that money from Brad's investors, Maguire was also frequently seen in public with Dicaprio and other named celebrities as part of "The Pussy Posse" as they were dubbed for their antics in clubbing and women, and in Molly's book she describes Maguire as "a bad tipper" and "demeaning to women" referring to an incident where he tried to make her "bark like a seal" for a 1000 dollar poker chip (think of player X trying to cap her earnings and the smug attitude with which he ends molly's first game calling just to laugh in her face) . Additionally, molly started her first role in the game in 2007 but Maguire started his game in 2005 with a co-conspirator, Houston Curtis. Curtis also published a book(Billion Dollar Hollywood Heist) about the game where he details it initially started as a means for Maguire and Curtis to "win as much money from their hand picked suckers as possible", Maguire actually had his future wife Jen Meyer as the dealer in his games before Molly where he regularly requested that his players tip Jen to thank her (just like the " thank molly if you want to be invited back" scene). Houston recognized himself in the Harlan character admitting it was him, having lost over 1 million dollars to Rick Salomon and others on a particularly bad night at the 4 seasons Maguire then staked Houston 600k USD (in the film Player X admits to having staked for Harland for 2 years before molly's own game). One or two coincidences is one thing, but a bag full of them seems to be a fairly clear indication that Tobey Maguire was Player X, even including his terrible stake deal with Houston that molly exclaimed "he would never be free of that debt" near verbatim, his treatment of people, his motive, and his play style.

Comes across as surprisingly immature and self-involved, and not especially intelligent. But you can’t argue with her success at the business of running high-stakes card games.
