Well that's the point. In the original song the singer doesn't actually experience love, he is just fighting rumours about him being queer. This cover is about a women who lives her life DESPITE people talking behind her back

I've been lucky enough to see Jacob (Sax Player) perform improv live twice now, once for my college class and once for my church in a Jazz themed Christmas, since he's a local and does jobs for friends. The guy is pure talent and a joy to see perform, he seems to add a little flair in his performances and sometimes comedy. Massive respect for him and where he's gone from our little suburb.

Agreed - my ultimate pet peeve is when people change the pronouns and the lyrics don’t rhyme anymore! Like in this case if the singer had said “kissed him” it wouldn’t rhyme with the previous “whisper”
Same, it's such a shallow weird change to make. I'm gay, I like girls, but I always keep he/him in my covers if the song's discussing a male. If you change the pronouns, the song can sound hella funny, and it's so pointless.

A local band (older white guys, every one of them) did a magnificent rendition of John Prine's 'Angel From Montgomery', which starts with "I am an old woman, named after my mother." It's great music, performed sincerely and well. No one questions the lyric or the performance. Just enjoy it.

I've been off kilter for the past few days, because none of the music I was listening to was quite hitting that sweet spot. This was exactly what I didn't know I needed.
