Ace of Diamonds is one of several mines open to the public where you can dig for Herkimer Diamonds. While not actually diamonds, these quartz crystal are often terminated at both ends making them look like a faceted gemstone. We had quite a bit more luck at this mine than we did the day prior at the Herkimer Diamond Mine next door.

Thank you for the tour of the tools and supplies you recommended bringing! You guys found some really cool matrix pieces and that yellow-tinted one you found is awesome. I am going to Herkimer, NY to mine for the first time 2 weeks from now and I'm absorbing as much knowledge as possible from folks sharing their experiences on CZcams.

Have known of Ace of Diamonds for many years even tho' I never collected there. Over the latter p0rtion of the 1990's & early 2000's collected @ Crystal Grove.
If you scoop up the subsoil/sand & sift it thru a window screen sifter or tea strainer, you might find crystals that are as small as 1mm.

You are correct, in my excitement I kept calling them calcite and forgot to correct it in the edits. Thank you!
