    Sending so much love to Eugene! The fact that he said he desperately wants to be filming with the Try Guys rather than working on his other passionate projects that we will see soon makes me so emotional. Even though he is able to do stuff on his own thanks to the Try Guys any fan can tell he has so much fun filming with them 💖. Can’t wait to see what he has been working on! I really related to Miles with the intentional drinking! I’ve actually tried to implement a rule where I’ll only have a drink to accompany a positive experience or emotion. If I’m stressed or upset at the end of the day I don’t have a drink to unwind because that feels like an unhealthy behaviour. If I’m cooking and listening to a podcast and want a glass of wine - absolutely.

      The older you become the less, I hope, you’ll find the thought of drinking as your way to unwind. Reading actual books, a magazine, listening or watching a CZcams channel (personally I listen/watch true crime) while cleaning up after dinner, folding laundry, or journaling, unsubscribe from emails that crowd your inbox, etc. I suppose this sounds really boring and mundane, but it is real life. Real life takes a strong character presence within yourself to deal with the tedious and mundane aspects of life.

    40:15 I don't want to sound too depressing, but right after Miles asked what your best days ever were, I tried to think of one for myself and very quickly got caught in a loop of bad memories, and memories that were almost good, but always filled or finished with something sour. It brought back the feeling I often get (and because of some tragic recent events followed directly after a fun spring break I had, have felt a lot recently) that my life is destined to be bittersweet, and it's a taste I need to become accustomed to, or life will continue being bland. Anyways, right as I was pulling myself out of this, Eugene said he didn't think he had one, and I immediately felt calmer, less lonely. Eugene, you're an inspiration and as a fan I'm very proud of how much you've over come and accomplished. I've deeply missed your presence on the podcast. Hope I'll have the chance of running into you while drunk in Austin one day. ♡

      I think it's a real job?

    • @TheShauNanigans
      @TheShauNanigans Před 2 lety +3

      @@LG_Hakubi Internships vary a ton. Some people don't get paid at all for their work as interns, while other places do pay them. Some companies use the term intern as an actual employee title with all that comes with it, but the internship doesn't usually last forever. Most companies see interns as temporary and will either hire them on as permanent employees after a certain time period or decide to use another intern for the same job because it's cheaper. No matter how a company operates, interns are typically paid a lower wage than if the person was serving the company with a more official/permanent job title. I hope the Try Guys take their past experience with entertainment companies seriously, and treat their interns well compared to how they were treated in the past. They certainly seem like they do at least surface level. I think it says a lot that most of their employees have stuck around for most of the company's history. It does mean that it might be difficult to find a place to fit in interns permanently into the company structure if they truly can only keep them for the duration of their internship. This business is all about who you know and how you interact with the people you know, however. So even if they don't keep her, she will have an excellent reference and has probably already made a lot of connections. Sorry this explanation is long. I think the term intern is such a loose term it's difficult to explain quickly why this may not be a permanent position, so here we are with this lengthy reply.

      @LG_Hakubi Před 2 lety +2

      @TheShauNanigans Před 2 lety

      @@LG_Hakubi I didn't realize that. I only remember them introducing her as their intern, which like I explained could mean a lot of things. I can certainly be misremembering that episode or maybe misheard what was said as well. If she actually is hired on officially then that's great. It doesn't matter to me enough to go looking for the episode.

I think it’s so important because I know a lot of people love him and relate to him. Especially talking about drinking. I think it’s important to talk about drinking culture and how it can be fun, but can be dangerous and lead to consequences. And the caveat he talked about with his “best day ever.” It’s hard feeling like you have a caveat to something that should have been a great day. I love him❤️

    Great conversation on alcohol. My father is an alcoholic and is dying of liver failure. It’s always been something that made me not want to drink and now that I am older, I do drink, but only socially/for events. Another thing that people don’t talk about is addictive personalities. Both of my parents were addicts and I managed to avoid being addicted to drugs/alcohol, because of their bad example, but ended up gaining addictions to other things like sugar and food. I thought I was okay because I wasn’t drinking that much, but I’m still hurting my body in the long run.

      Good for you! I know it's hard just because I'm trying to help my neighbor through the same thing.
      He spent 6 weeks in rehab. All his "buds" were drinking buddies, so he's trying to figure that out. He's also struggling with his sexual identity, and that always points toward bars. We talk a lot, even though he knows I know when he's lying.
      What I notice the most is that there really aren't alternative things to do with friends, and that sucks. So many get dragged into religious groups, which isn't going to happen here. To me, that's just trading one harmful addiction for another...but that's strictly my opinion from what I've observed in the Evangelical Southeast.
      Keep it up, it's really worth it, and for what it's worth, I'm rooting for you!

      @AndiG keep going. Minute by minute turns into day by day then month by month and before you realize it you’re at a year. My oldest sibling is 2 years sober. He lost his job of 22 years and didn’t get invited or asked to walk his daughter down the isle. He has to keep busy doing physical things. He plays basketball every morning. He coaches baseball, umpire’s, etc. He goes to workout every morning before playing basketball. He was a closet drinker for decades but his then wife cheated and left him. This was the catapult that introduced heavy drinking and then drugs. He lost everything. He has rebuilt his life from the ground up. He is once again my big brother, protector of his 4 sisters and our 75 year old mother. He actually was working undercover and got caught up. His brain is forever changed from the excessive amount of hard liquor and the heavy type of drugs. Not the weed or taking pain pills. The hard stuff when he had only ever drank and smoked weed. He is MY big brother of whom I’m proud as hell of.

    "Imagine how much of our society is centered around drinking and how much of our social personas are then linked to it"
    Yes yes yes yes! As someone who doesn't drink, and who has been in countless situations where I was pressured to drink and constantly had to keep saying no, thank you so so much for saying that.
    I'm curious to know if anyone else has the same experience, but funnily enough, I feel like there is more pressure from my parents' generation than from people my own age. It's almost like drinking is so ingrained in the culture of that generation that for some weird reason they take issue with younger people not wanting to continue this custom.

    • @annasalvaggio8796
      @annasalvaggio8796 Před 2 lety +2

      I thought I would just share my thoughts: Personally, I have never seen the joy in drinking. All through high school, I would get irritated as I listened to my peers recount the weekends they spent black out drunk and taking pride in running from the cops when the parties were busted. I made it clear to my peers that I didn't want to drink, and so while they never pressured me into doing something I did not want, I was also not invited to most social events. It didn't, and still does not bother me though because I chose to spend that time on academics and occasionally with my small friend group that did not drink; we still talk daily.
      Now I'm 21 and can legally drink, but still feel no inclination to do so because I don't like the idea of handing control over to a strange version of myself. College is a giant drunk festival, but I can assure you, there is no need to compromise your personal morals and lie to yourself for an illusion of acceptance. There is always somebody else in the same situation as you, and even if others you're stuck up or boring, their taunts are worthless because they refuse to see your value.

      I stopped drinking due to getting terrible headaches (I think my body was just telling me it had had enough). My mum was living with me at the time and she had and still has trouble understanding that I just don’t want to drink alcohol. It’s been 10+ years and she still doesn’t understand. I’ve found over time everybody else has accepted it but I still get looks from strangers and acquaintances when I order water or a coffee instead of wine or liquor. I’m 38 and find it’s people my age or older who have the mentality that fun = drinking. I don’t think I could stomach an alcoholic drink now, I don’t even like the taste.

    • @i.am.OK.
      @i.am.OK. Před 2 lety

      @@annasalvaggio8796 I totally understand what you're saying - my experience is very similar. I'm in college now, and I find that people are more open-minded than back in high school. I know a _lot_ of people here that don't drink. I don't know if it's because the legal drinking age in my country is 16 (way too early imo), and people of that age are hormone-driven disasters, but getting wasted on every occasion was seen as a normal, desirable thing to do. I just kept away from those situations, and some of my best friends also didn't drink, so it didn't bother me too much.
      So leaving aside those 16-year-olds in high school, I feel that much of the pressure to drink comes from people older than me, like I said above. The incredulous looks, a joke here and there at my expense, the constant "oh come on, just a little sip?" at family gatherings...
      Just to be clear: I've never been pressured to drink anything against my will, but these relentless "joking" comments seem more damaging to me, because it's a fight against generations of adults conditioned to consider alcohol an indispensable part of life.

    As someone who was sober for her last year in undergrad and is sober during the beginning of grad school, I want to thank y’all for talking about drinking culture and how it makes being sober in society difficult. Ya girl struggles from time to time because of societal norms surrounding alcohol so I appreciated listening to y’all dissect it♥️

    Oh, Eugene, as a Texan and a pan woman with two kids. . . babe, I'm so grateful for the efforts you are making for Texans. Living here is so hard right now and every time another horror happens the response from libs outside the state seems to be "just let them secede already, JFC" conveniently forgetting that over 5 million people here voted blue in 2020. We need so much help and living here feels so full of despair so much of the time. Thank you for trying and not just writing off those of us stuck in this hellscape right now.

    Love this dynamic. I had the same herniated disc as Miles. I had surgery to remove the herniated portion about a month ago and the healing process hasn’t been bad and I’m hopeful for increasing pain relief. I hope he finds a treatment that helps him because I know it sucks.

    Eugene bringing up Salonpas gave me life. We have those in the Philippines too and they're AMAZING. Idk if it will work for Miles' herniated disc, but it's definitely good for pain relief.

    Miles, I had the surgery for the same herniated disc (L5/S1 laminectomy) was miraculous for me. I woke up from surgery with less pain than I went into it with. Just throwing that out there because sciatica pain is no joke.
