That sound, audio ca(r)viar! I’ve owned many Volvo’s; 142, 144, 144S, 164, P1800, 240, 850, S80, XC70, XC90… and now still have a 144 1973 and a V90CC… ❤
Makes me want to get my blue 1969 145 estate out of the hibernation it´s been in for a few year now. It was bought brand new by my parents on the 11th of July 1969. I was three years and five days by then and remembers the purchase. The car is still in a very good condition with no rust and original paint. Absolutely not under ANY circumstances for sale!
I think there was a faster version of the 142 was the 142 S . the Volvo ad claimed that was a rocket . They are not zero-60 cars. But I think this was the Volvo famous for fast acceleration Mid-range punch . The ad was showing a car sales man driving at high speeds and the client was as a passenger and he was Scared asssfak . That maybe was the Begining of Volvo marketing for fast highway cars . I read that the Volvo 850R had faster 50-70mph acceleration than Ferrari Testarossa and Ferrari F355 . Automóvil Magazine Spain drove the cars . Same with Saab 9000 Aero from Autocar Magazine UK. 9000 Aero smoked : Lambo Diablo Lotus Esprit BMW M3 Porsche 928 GTS Aston Martin DB7 50-70mph. Yes cars with twice the Horsepower numbers and lot more expensive . Maybe Volvo and Saab had the fórmula for that brutal boost on mid range maybe was many hours of testing their cars on the highway and merging / passing / overtaking . 3rd gear was brutal . Comparing : Motorweek Volvo vs Motortrend WRX STI . 1997 Volvo C70 T5 0-60 mph : 6.2 sec 2004 STI : 4.7 sec. C70 T5 1/4 mile : 14.1 seconds WRX STI 1/4 mile : 13.8 seconds. Yesss the 3rd gear was powerful . We can see the 1997 C70 T5 would beat a 2004 STI on the highway . Motorweek did 14.1 seconds. That was a manual !!! a 1997 Volvo C70 T5 was fast right ???? 6.2 vs 4.7 sec. AWD wins 14.1 vs 13.8 seconds .We can imagine what was going to happen letting those cars from 60mph to top Speed . Yesss Volvo C70 T5 was going to be the winner
My (1969) 142S had twin SU Carbs, and a Laycock Overdrive. I wouldn't say that it was fast. It was a large heavy car, with the B18B Engine - only 1800 cc. Twin Carbs gave an improved performance over the 142.
My Volvo 142 went 160 km/hr on flat ground after I advanced thd distributor a bit. It went 170 km/hr downhill full throttle down a hill called the Coquahalla Hiway between Merritt and Vancouver. It sounded like a jet plane inside. I didn't even have overdrive myself, so I'm not sure how fast it would go if I did. The roads are too bumpy for very high speeds where I did my tests. They are designed for slower speeds, unfortunately. You need to upgrade everything about a car and know your roads if you plan to go really fast. I once met a teenager with a Volvo 142 that he'd put two sway bars on the front instead of one and built an air dam to increase air flow and air pressure to the carburetor and he said he could get it up to 180 km/ hr on flat ground. He said it went around corners beautifully and didn't lean like the original configuration.
@@WannaSeeAutos Gotta have the sanitizer. I hope you were wearing the face mask as well. Double face mask is even better. Gotta keep your tyranical bosses happy. You never know what evil germs will sneak up on you. Soon you will have to show your double vacination certificate before you are allowed in your car. Happy days.
My first Volvo. It saved my life when I hit a small oak tree. Been driving Volvo’s ever since

Solid 142 you got there, i was just wondering how it's like to drive at higher speeds, and what's the 0-60 time?
Maybe im gonna make a video of that later ! :)
