Nigel. Oh Boy. have you started on an amazing journey. This is not just any song contest. Its the oldest and biggest music contest in the world. The Eurovision Song Contest has been going since 1956 and was initialy looked at as a way to promote television and bring Europe back together after the war only 10 years before. In the first contest 7 countries entered one singer singing two different songs and the prize went to the host country that year Switzerland. These days up 43 countries compete with two semi finals held on a Tuesday and Thursday to determine the final line up of 25 songs for the final on the Saturday. The show these days last about 4 hours. Since Denmark won in 1963 it has become tradition the the winning country hosts the show the next year. Though there have been instances when this has not been possible so another country steps in. This will happen next year as this years winners Ukraine cant host for obvious reasons so runner up the UK offered to do so and its just been announced the the city of Liverpool will have the honour (and expence). Ireland hold the record for most wins at 7, Sweden 6 then The UK, France, Luxemburg and the Netherlands with 5 each.
Every song is an original composition for the contest and countries have different ways of chosing the song/artist that will represent them. Sweden for instance has a contest of its own that lasts about 6 weeks to choose its song. The winner of the main contest is chossen by voting on the night. The voting system has changed over the years but the current system is that half the marks come from a jury vote in each country made up of music professionals and the other half from a televote by the public in each country. You cannot vote for your own country. The top ten on the jurys list and the top ten in each public vote will get points on the score board. The song in tenth place gets 1 point, 9th 2 points etc until 3rd gets 8 points, 2nd gets 10 point and 1st the coverted 12 points. Since this system was introduced a few years ago with the public and jury vote split it has produced some interest differences between the two. Obviously at times politics has played its part and there has been favourable voting between neighbouring coutries but over all it has rarely influenced the who wins. Though last year the support for Ukraine was enormous buy the public even though the juries didnt rate it as highly and put the Uk in top spot. At the end of the show the winner sings again. In the one below, Germanys first win in 1982 the singer reprised the song switching from German to English to French and then Dutch.
