Pilot Custom Standard Models | Nib performance & choice over style

  • In this video - I do a second look at the Pilot Custom 74, the Pilot Custom 742, and the Pilot Custom 743 (pens that were all released in 1992, the 74th anniversary of Pilot) as part of a comparative review.
    In my current pen collection, the Pilot Custom standard pens probably get used the most. They aren't made of flashy materials, just a humble resin, and they have the most basic of designs - a simple torpedo/cigar shape. They take nearly any Pilot ink converter of your choice or cartridges when required. Why they get the most use from me is because of the consistent performance of their 14k gold nibs - particularly when it comes to cursive writing.
    Although I like the juiciness and the wow effect of a broad or italic nib occasionally, my nib of choice is typically a fine of some sort. And not many pen companies do a fine as decently as Pilot, in my opinion. By and large, Western Fines (or even EFs) are not fine enough for me and I tend to use Western pen manufacturer pens more for their broader nib options.

    Thank you for explaining the differences between these pens. I only have one Pilot pen, the low cost Metropolitan. I would love to explore their range of pens further and this video has helped me. I have subscribed to your channel as I find your content very enjoyable.

    Greetings! They are all excellent pens with good balance & smooth buttery nibs. For me,the Custom 742 is just perfect ! One plus point is they all use converters & hence easy to clean & maintain. Was contemplating getting the 823 but it is vacuum filled.
    Thank you for a good comparative video.

    This was a very helpful comparison. I thoroughly enjoy your pen reviews and the way you touch on the details of each pen. This review and others you have done have helped confirm my decision to either purchase some pens (Pilot Custom 823, which I love) or cross others off my list (Pelikan m600). Your channel has become my go to source for objective fountain pen reviews.

    Great job on providing feedback on the use cases for the different nib sizes (EF for cursive, F for print). That is very helpful.

    I love the custom 743, the larger number 15 nib and the Con-70 make it a workhorse with a ton of ink capacity. I love my 823, but the 743 gets more use.

      Same for me. I prefer the 743 also because I can extend the capacity using cartridges e.g. when travelling

    Love seeing a fellow Singaporean fountain pen enthusiast (: thank you for the very informative video. I have been looking into getting the custom 743, and I’m happy to see that we have similar tastes in finer nibs. Will be watching the rest of your videos! Curious to know where you got your pens from!

    Huge fan, thanks for great content. Are the grip diameters the same between the 742 and 743? It seems overall length is from larger rings too.

      Hi, apologies if I translated wrongly... I think you are asking if the nibs are interchangeable between the #10 in the 742 and the #5 in the 74 - the answer is no.

    thanks for the video. I am not quite understanding the soft nibs vs. regular nibs. I read that soft nibs would create wider lines, is this true? I am thinking to get either a 742 or 743? I know 742 is #10 and 743 is #15. Will a soft medium (SM nib on 742) and a mediun fine (MF nib on 743) produce the same line width? Thank you

    • @WrexelsWorld
      @WrexelsWorld  Před 2 lety +1

      The "softness" will add a little bounce to the writing experience. Whether or not wider lines will result depends on how much pressure you use to write. If you write with a light touch, the usual line widths will still stay true. As for the #10 vs #15, my preference is for the latter, it is superior in every way compared to the #10. If this is your first time using a fountain pen, concentrate on picking a nib width based on your handwriting size, e.g. if you write relatively small choose the finer widths.

  • @santauxia
    @santauxia Před rokem

    Nice review. I also need a finer nib, I cant write with a thicker pen. I have a Metropolitan F and work good for me. Which would you recommend? No flex no nothing, just a Fine or EF nob that writes well. Thanks in advance.

    • @WrexelsWorld
      @WrexelsWorld  Před rokem +1

      If you are asking for an alternative to your Metropolitan fine from the Pilot Custom range - the gold nibs are quite comparable in terms of width and firmness compared to the steel Pilots e.g. you can safely get a Custom 74 F and have it work similarly to your Metropolitan F
