  • Unless it's in the lease, nothing in Tennessee's Landlord-Tenant Act gives renters the right to air conditioning.

I survived just fine without AC when I was growing up, but as an adult now, I don’t consider AC a luxury but a necessity. The heat is just way more intense than it was back then, and everyone you talk to says the same. You can survive without AC but it’s fucking miserable and dangerous at times.

@@Slingl3lizzad3 A lot of people died of heatstroke, heart attacks, and breathing issues. Children had more places to swim and stay in the water on hot days. A lot of people lived in shotgun houses which had a porch and trees to shade their houses. Homes were designed to be airy and breezy, with large windows, archways, and high ceilings to allow for cross-ventilation and outdoor breezes. Double-hung windows were designed to push hot air out by raising the bottom sash and lowering the top. Now people live in small boxes surrounded by asphalt. Last year here in Tennessee temperature were at 110 many days.
Even if you are talking about 110°F, you will get heat stroke. If your body temperature reaches 104°F you will already begin to suffer from heat stroke. The longer you allow this to remain untreated the higher your risk of permanent damage in your organs especially in your brain or even death.

If the lease doesn't address putting in an air conditioner, the tenant can put one in, the same way if the lease doesn't address providing air conditioning, they don't have to, apparently. Small a/c don't need special electric outlets. Even most larger ones can be plugged into the wall. They have new ones that are a "saddle design" that fit half in and half out of the window, making installation easier. Two people can do this - even one - my handyman has installed a few for me for the rentals.

Central home AC has only been around since the 1960s, so I’m not sure if it’s a human right or first world luxury, and window units are only 150-200 bucks. Half the places I’ve lived in didn’t have AC. That said, this woman’s apartment has a central unit that’s not working, and it should be repaired by law based on the simple fact that it’s there, it’s part of the apartment just like the plumbing and ceiling. There’s a difference between providing AC and maintaining an apartment complex that’s falling into disrepair.
