- There’s no shortage of choice when it comes to small SUVs, and the Audi Q2 & Volkswagen T-Roc are two of the biggest players in the business. They’re both based on their respective hatchback little brothers (the A3 and Golf), but given Volkswagen owns Audi, the two cars share many of the same parts. So are there really that many differences between the two?
Join Mat in his latest head-to-head as he puts the Q2 & T-Roc to the test to see just which one of these premium small SUVs you should go for!

It'd have been great if it was a car with the Troc's exterior with the Q2's interior
VAG know what they are doing. They know if they done that, thats where everyone would go to. So they split it between the two brands. VAG been doing this for a long time
I’ve just bought a T ROC. I love it, I bought it because I have osteoporosis and need a perch and swing in seat. I’m 73 so am getting a big old for a hot hatch, but have had my moments in Alfasuds. The T ROC allows me to put stuff easily in the boot, gives me all round good vision higher up than an Audi A3 or a Golf. I find it sporty enough for my needs. Agree the finish of the dash is hard plastic but.... do I really care? Not a lot
Just the comment I was looking for re the osteoporosis and seating. Thanks.
Drove both, preferred the T-roc over the audi. Don't care about plastics on the interior, it just drove better, felt better and in my humble opinion looked better. To each his own... :)
What, in my opinion the Audi Q2 feels much better to drive, it felt somewhat similar to the A5, while the Volkswagen was pretty uncomfortable for me, the breaking was weird, steering wasn't that smooth, and just the overall quality was also off.
Real talk who cares about plastic
T-Roc looks better imo.
Bet only reason they made the interior cheaper is not to overlap the Audi.

If Mat teamed up with a manufacturer to design and build the perfect car then the dashboard would be padded, the boot would have no lip, the back seats would fold exactly flat, there would be no fake exhaust, you would be able to carry water bottles inside every door, the C pillars would have 'opera windows' in them, the centre console would be solid as a rock and there would be enough headroom for abraham Lincoln to ride in the back wearing his top hat. What did I miss?
I do think Mat should design a car though, I would buy one rather than something Pininfarina churned out.
· doubleplusgood · ʞɐǝdsʞɔnp · well said.
The infotainment system must be bmw idrive😄
It would only cost £16,000
Exhaust pipes
Hahaha! Mat oughta see this and maybe 3D print his dream car!
I’ve just been and looked at them I prefer the TRoc
I'm really liking the recent videos! However, I would really like more reviews of smaller cars
Got the missus a second hand 2020 Q2 1.0 sport and it's great for her, we got a nice warranty deal for 5 years with the Audi dealership we bought it from. It had daft low mileage and was immaculate. The Audi is fab. I love it, nice comfortable drive and it's rock solid on the road the breaking system is the sharpest I've ever had on a vehicle and it's safe as houses. iThe steering is nice and responsive, very responsive in fact. It feels professional if that's the right word, or 'classy'.
it's also more fuel economical than our old 1.3 ten year old Corsa!!
Yes some of the trim is a bit plastic'y but the breaking, suspension and engine system is where the engineering is. We tried Seat (too rubbery on the road) Renault (too sluggish) and Toyota (too cheap feeling) and various other makes and none of them felt like the Audi to drive.
Massive boot space and comfy interior.
It's comfortable, has a fair bit of poke to the engine, feels more like a 1.3/1.4 engine and is very very comfortable. I keep the old banger and she has the Audi. Luckily she looks after it and it doesn't do huge amounts of miles. A good little car to pick up second hand for a good price, but a good warranty is worth getting if you can preferably from an authorised dealer rather than a 'car warehouse' type retailer.
Yes, there's a lot of expensive upgrades and such like, but I'd never buy a car like this brand new! If i was looking for more luxury I'd have gone for a second hand Q3 sport version but we don't need a bigger and more expensive to run car.
Bonus's with the Q2 include a cheaper insurance, road tax and London congestion charge exemption because of it's low emission engine! :)
A belter of a little car, or not so little depending on your view...
The best review in the entire commebt section thanks mate
I have had a Q2 Sport for just under a year and although I find the ride a little firm overall I would recommend it as it is lovely to drive and full of great technology.
Thank you for the info I was wondering to go for Audi q2 or Seat Leon
Yes Matt hope there was the options at the end though
I love our T Roc. Made one mistake though, could have ordered the key fob auto open /close hatch/boot for £300, it requires a firm pull to close without and it’s the only thing we regret not ordering. To aftermarket fit one is £1200 so if you dithering over the options, do order the remote close. You won’t regret it.👌
Do you get yours brand new?
For the adventure of climbing the hypermarket parking.
hahhahahaahahah
both are a really great, big, expensive SHIT!
Or parking between two spots.
@@sirmob that’s what your mother said when the doctor took you out of her.
I can't wait for this T ROC to arrive to Australia I'm certainly going to buy it..
Mat, I just want to say Thank You for all the car reviews over the years, your in a league of your own. 👍
We are cross shopping the T-Cross with the CrosslandX and Seat Arona - Mrs M wants good visibility as the No 1 and ease of driving in traffic as No 2 (so good tech) have you some guidance or opinions having driven them all please?
T-Roc for me out of those two! Plus I can’t ever remember getting in any car and scratching or banging the dash board? So for me it’s not enough of a reason to go for an A2 instead! Good review though
scratching a dash board?
Think why Mat does the scratching the panels is good because its perceived quality, if you buy a expensive car you want it to feel expensive that said i bought a 2023 T-Roc, its interior quality is a lot better than last gen so happy with it
real talk 💯
Q2 is more aggressive and feels more comfy to be in :)
Yes I tested both and went for the Q2.
Engraçado q as lanternas traseiras do Q2 lembram muito mais o Pólo do as do TRoc!
have the same colour q2. Really love it.
yes Mat been waiting for a notification all day
😂😂😂
When did you record this video? Gloves and beanie in September :D Freakin UK
The Q2 actually looks good in this spec. The rims also do the trick. Too bad I already saw way too many entry level ones that looked really awkward..
I couldn't care less about scratchy plastic, it's all good to me!
I have driven both. The VW feels slower off the mark and less dynamic when it comes handling, the handling on the Q2 40 TFSI is superb and feels like a true hot hatch. The interior on the Q2 feels and looks fancier, the multimedia system is non touch screen though, but I personally like that, since I don't like using touch while driving, just feels unsafe. The VW has the more sophisticated exterior from the front IMHO, but the Q2 with a black grill matches it in this respect. I ended up getting the Q2 and I absolutely love the drive, what did surprise me though is it consumes up to 50% more fuel than the claimed 6.5L when driving in the suburbs, you're realistically looking at 9.4L/100 if not higher, they really should force car manufacturers to perform more realistic fuel consumption tests.
Are those red brake callipers on a VW T-Roc?
The TRoc R looks good. Here in France ‘troc’ means bartar or exchange like a jumble sale or other second hand goods depot. 🤣. Maybe i will wait for a ‘troc troc r’
"The T-Roc is better in every department, that's why I choose the Q2"
Thanks for another excellent review
Did Mat cover the horsepower and engine options of each car or did I miss it in the video?
We have a Blue Sparkly Q2 and got it when it first came out and it's S line
Do a video where you compare these 2, Seat Arona and the Kia Stonic please! Off road Tests included
Those r not off road cars 😀
Those cars are good for city drives 🤔
Soft touch materials are nice but honestly how often do you hop into the car and feel the top of the dash? The doors and center console get more action then the dash ever does thats where the plush feeling plastic should be in my opinion
How would you compare the new skoda kamiq to those two?
Can you guys do a video about the 2019 mercedes benz gle
something wrong with the audio, please check it out and in next videos fix it, thank you
Hello mat love you bro nothing to be more said its fabulous
Without any lade its fantastic
So wistful
Omnipotent god bless you man
Unfortunately the Q2 still has that ye olde pop up screen in the centre of the dash. Except that it doesn't pop up, or down - it fixed.
Why are car reviewer obsessed with hard plastics in cars. When was the last time anyone stroked the top of the their dash.
Remember back in 2016, they used to make it go down. You would think that now with the in dash screens, they would bring back the pop up screens. I was just saying the same thing about the dash. This video is to sell you on a Audi, you'll never get one for 19, whereas a VW for 19 is more realistic. Classic salesmanship going on here.
I would pick the Audi Q2 because of its funky and exceptional design without the fake exhaust tips, has a great interior ergonomics with easy-to-use controls and engaging to drive over the Volkswagen.
I'm pretty sure you could store the parcel shelves of both cars behind the rear seats, just like on some Skodas. Not all parcel shelves go under the false floor. Designers try different solutions.
Love the T Roc
Do a Q2 and A3 SB Comparison!!
As always a great review of both cars. That’s really helped me make my mind up. It’s the Audi!
Q2 edition 1 is awesome
Hi can anyone please tell me when this test was filmed 🤨
T-Roc for me thank you.
T-Roc exterior looks so much better.
Q2 interior looks so much better.
I will go with Kia Sportage for that price.
Which one is the most comfortable Matt? And which one is the quietest? I appreciate that you have to talk about handling, but when city speed limits are dropping to 20mph, I don't really care!
both look alright on the outside but I'd take Q2 for the interior
Is there really no space, under the boot flore, to store the luggage compartment cover?
A small suggestion, the reality is the majority of the time you'll see a car is when you're driving, usually behind it, so in future focus a bit more on the rear view of the vehicle.
both had same size tires? Maybe that contributed to sharper fiel..?
I think I prefer the VW, has a classier look IMO
I am liking t roc more than q2 and also loving the design of it
T-Roc with an R-Line trim and I am happy.
How good is the 4 wheel drive on these 2 SUVs
Just be decent and reasonable and get a VW Golf or an Audi A3.
Diego Mendi Agree. Not trying to be picky but the Polo is what the T-roc is based off
Millen Rogers and the A1 is what the Q2 is based off
no.
Just be decent and reasonable and get something from a different manufacturer. Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Kia Ceed, etc.
Unless you have shitty road conditions in your area
How old is the tech underneath this car, if you still have to put the key in the ignition and turn it to start the car?
Missed these videos
Tiguan 2.0 4motion. Best option for price/quality/space/tech.
Nah man my dad owns the full option one and it’s really cheap from the inside
Still having trouble deciding which suv type we should buy heads wrecked need help love volvo xc60 but I'm not made of money ffs
review the T-Roc R
Which is better, not which is best.
Which is the best out of the two
theone Volkswagen
Choose Q2 as sporty SUV and T ROC as pratically one...

I personally like the VW more
If you compare the T-Roc and the Q2, definitely VW wins.
I personally like to think you’re a blithering idiot
@@lupreztryson what you said makes you more like an idiot
How much are the cars you reviewed? Over £30k? Exactly how much though?
Kindly review AMG-GT 63s 4 door
Im waiting on a brand new T roc as a mobility car I looked at the audi q2 very nice but prefer the t roc .I was lucky to get the t roc as they are no longer going to be on the mobility scheme
can you get the Q2 with quattro?
Thanks!
Please review all new g4 Rexton 2018
I have had the q2 for almost a year and I am in no hurry to get rid of it!!! That's not just because it's on a 3 yr finance plan 🤔🙄😉
Thanks Mat.
what is the difference between volkswagens digital screen and that of audi? they look similar
I only recently realized my car had soft-touch plastics on the dash, never felt the need to touch before watching Car Wow vids, is it that big a deal on a basic car?
On the VW the rear doors have an even cheaper finish than the front ones. Why? Another interesting review from Mat though.
Make a video: Stelvio vs X3 vs Q5
Some crossovers (SUV seems a bit rich) look good, but for the same (or less) money, you could potentially get a higher specification model of the hatchback it's based upon with better interior, better handling and better fuel consumption. Admittedly, you lose a bit of interior space and ground clearance (and possibly a better view), but even if you have 4WD (not that their hatchback equivalents don't, especially in Audi's case), who's going to take them off-road anyway? Perhaps people like the idea of sitting higher up, or being able to lord it over other drivers.
A little suggestion.
Graphical annotations on the screen for key points, please.
When you mention the price, for example, the price should be shown on screen.
Other key points should follow suit
Nobody cares tbh
I can fit it under the spare in t roc just put it in the left side first and squeeze a little bit and you done
Why is the volume for all carwow videos so much lower than videos from other channels?. Can you please increase them. Thank you.
I was thinking 🤔 about getting a SUV but then realized that everyone is getting one, I’ll be getting a Hatchback instead!
Wow, you are so independant. You decide where you go by looking where everyone else is going and then going the opposite. No one controls you. You are so unique!
@@frankopanklaric Dobro si ti njemu reko
You can't afford either
I maintain, for a car to be good looking, it has to look good with small wheels. The q2 doesn't
The q2 boot is bigger when you lower the floor, 2 settings !!
For ones who says quality of the dash is unimportant: The difference comes in after long years of usage especially in sunny regions. Plastic dash simply looks like a trash while a high quality soft dashs look just like new.
what about the vw caddy make a video plz
Why the blood on the hand (3:08)? Also, I noticed you leaning more on your left side. Is your leg hurt?
Pls do a review of Genesis g70 sport!!!!
These two cars share the same MQB platform. So differences are in equipment and luxury material.
The troc is better! I’m very indecisive and have been figuring out which one to buy for a very long time. The Q2 entry level is very cheap looking the exterior and interior n I’m a massive Audi fan so was disappointed to find it’s only worth getting the sports upwards not technik
The Troc is more solid n even at entry level looks great. Also worth to know that troc even at entry level drives exactly the same as the higher specs as it’s just the look that slightly changes with trim etc not the drive. I’d go for a 1.5
I got the 1.5 TSI 3 years ago. Such a nice car
The T-Rocs interiour is laughably bad imo. I have sat in one a couple of days ago that was specced up to 46k€, but the inside felt cheaper than any Mk8 Fiesta. I always liked VW interiours for their minimalist design with high quality materials (for the class), but some of the latest models are just terrible.
Imo they just reuse interiors in the last times...just change a few things like cup holders or dash shape but in fact it's the same interior.
Wurzelzwerg1212 You havent actually been in a MK8 Fiesta, havent you?
They do have soft touch material on the dash ;)
46k!!! Madness for a car like that
Even a Fiesta from 2006 has a soft touch dashboard! ;)
@Vinnisl a I have been in one and am aware of that. It's part of the point I was trying to make. The Fiestas Interiour (in higher trim levels at least) is nicer than the one in the T-Roc for considerably less money.
Seen a T-Roc for the first time yesterday but those Day time running lights are slightly annoying.
I'll take the upcoming Lexus UX ;) Hybrid/AWD
LEXUriouS Kirk agreed

Here we go
@@pratik1568 Yeah and Audi is just a VW. Or should that be Skoda? From a VW CC driver
Does it really matter about the "scratchy" cabin plastic material on the VW T-Roc upfront? For vehicles around the 20k - 25k price range what you expecting? You get what you pay for brand new.
Is the Q2 based on the A1 or A3
şu direksiyondan kaçmilyontane ürettiler çok merak ediyorum hala aynı
I agree the T-Roc can't have nasty plastics costing more than 20k. Different story when it comes to the Golf, especially R-Line Golf vs S-Line A3. Imo much much better interior and exterior of the Golf. Well, we own both cars in our family and the Golf also drives better, and that's logical given that it's the jewel in the VW crown. Unless badge snobing is important to you, there's no point in buying higher spec A3. I also do agree lesser specs version of Golf look worse than A3 lesser versions.
What is the brand of shirt that matt is wearing?
I wish we could get these here in my country. We don't get cool cars. They don't even sell the current Micra here. We still get the old one XD
Not bad but I'd rather have an A3 or a Golf to be honest.
And scrape the ground twice a day, at least in my city.
When did these cars come out. No leaves on the trees and looks cold so I’m figuring this was a while ago
